	7:34pm northguineahills: I didn't get into my disco until my roommate, who until then was just into indie rock, and was just getting into experimental and pop electronica, suddenly went whole hog into disco and started djing it everywhere (he was the only one doing it down here at the time) in '98.

	10:04pm coelacanth∅: Larry it's beautiful for sure...as is japanese knotweed. actually i routinely try to destroy lots of very beautiful plants. asiatic bittersweet is another; and wysteria; and "tree of heaven" (which is really a tree to hell) etc etc
	10:05pm Funky16Corners: I'm a fan of some things most people hate, i.e. dandelions, clover, sweetpea vines
	10:05pm northguineahills: For our controlled field sites, we use bamboo as water breaks to keep floating aquatic vegetation from blowing to one side of our berms. My boss has a stand he keeps on chopping down for use at work, planting, or for material. We uproot them before the dry season so they don't spread (they don't spread too well in standing water).
	10:09pm coelacanth∅: you could keep bamboo under control to some degree by burying a barrier around it on all sides - no splits or holes; metal; strong,thick plastic or concrete... i'm not sure how deep to go. not as deep as with knotweed i know that.
	10:10pm still b/p: I had a nice potted Japanese arrow bamboo plant years ago but neglected to pull it indoors before a freeze. I would place clusters of that if I was to design a yard and patio space.
	10:10pm northguineahills: we have infestation of knotweed at some of our sites. Bamboo and knotweed are also both edible.
	10:11pm Funky16Corners: I had to look knotweed up. I recognize it.
	10:12pm coelacanth∅: i don't make an effort to kill dandelions, and i plant lots and lots of clover. those are invasive but nowhere near at the level of these other plants.
	10:13pm coelacanth∅: (really clover's not much more invasive than grass, by my experience)
	10:14pm Franco Twinkie: Our bamboo problem is at the back of our property and I simply let our tenant deal with it. He's young and works in a nursery, so it's just like been at work for him.
	10:15pm northguineahills: I have no lawn, just a garden, natural wildflowers, and otherwise natural undergrowth and trees, (no mowing or monoculture).
	10:15pm coelacanth∅: knotweed's apparently helpful to treat lyme disease. i haven't tried it, aside from frequent physical contact with it.
	10:16pm Franco Twinkie: Coel, Do you have lyme disease?
	10:20pm coelacanth∅: Franco -probably. tests come back "inconclusive"; in other words some strains say negative and some say "not negative - at risk". i've pulled deer ticks out of my body several times but never noticed a bruise. (i also don't bruise that easily) i have all the symptoms but those symptoms are shared by many ailments.
	10:20pm still b/p: Embedded (but not engorged) tick count for the season: 1 deer tick, 1 wood tick. That's way ahead of any other year in memory.
	10:23pm coelacanth∅: i haven't found any yet this year, and i've been either up to my hips in grass or over my head in brush, shrubs and trees a lot since april. Lucky so far.
	10:24pm Funky16Corners: We had to tell our sons to stay off the wooded paths this summer. They started coming home with ticks, nothing embedded thankfully
	10:25pm Franco Twinkie: I've read about it, for sure, but never actually talked to anyone who has it. I remember reading a piece in the New Yorker about John Lurie who suffers from it. He made it sound horrible.
	10:26pm northguineahills: Thankfully lyme disease is rarely found this far south. Bu I'm also very keen on trying any edible plants I come across. (although many require much blanching or other preperation). Palmettos are everywhere here, just cut the stalks open and they taste like watercress/celery, no prep needed....
	10:26pm northguineahills: Since I was a kid, I was taught that if I got a tick, to take a knife, put it over a flame, and dig it out....
	10:27pm Franco Twinkie: I've never had a tick. Leeches,yes.

	10:35pm still b/p: Tick awareness and reflexive helpfulness are certainly heightened. Where I was clearing bamboo, I got at least three or four "check" advisories from restaurant workers out by the back door for their smoke and lunch breaks.

	10:45pm coelacanth∅: i once went hiking (somewhere in nj) and each of us (4 people) removed lots & lots of ticks. i remember counting close to 70 on myself - a few that i didn't find until getting home. nobody had any embed yet before being found and removed.
	10:46pm coelacanth∅: ngh - lyme,ct (where it was invented) is pretty far from florida; but there's nothing stopping it. just a matter of time.
	10:48pm Funky16Corners: I think Lyme ticks will reach FLA just as fire ants reach NJ
	10:49pm coelacanth∅: right, and stinkbugs and brown recluse spiders have made their way to upstate ny. they acclimate

	10:56pm Franco Twinkie: In the late summer, when the stream beds run slow in the San Gabriel mountains, there is always at least one case of Bubonic plague. Lot's of people can't help themselves and stick there face in the water.

	11:05pm Funky16Corners: Then the lizards get out of control and you have to bring in eagles, then then eagles freak out and you have to get bears, and then tigers and on and on until the place is a shambles.
	11:09pm Franco Twinkie: Coel, The brown recluse was introduced to this continent in the 1960's just at few miles from here. There was this hippie store in Sierra Madre that was importing, get this, bamboo floor mats from Asia. Guess what came along for the ride? In the park they have a bronze statue of a big spider! Also, they have the worlds largest Wisteria.

	11:17pm Dean: Not far from there in '78 I started work at a record store where the manager played disco incessantly. I fucking hated it, except for Giorgio Moroder's contributions. By now I've adjusted to, for instance, the Bee Gees.
	11:19pm Funky16Corners: @Chresti - We just had a neighborhod hysteria (on the NextDoor board) about hawks that could supposedly carry off fairly large dogs. People had to have it explained to them that most of the hawks around here weigh less than 6 pounds and while they may kill a bird or squirrel or two, your puppies are safe.
	11:20pm Franco Twinkie: Oh, Hey Dean. Gotta tell you. last night had a chile colorado burrito from this place in East Pasadena that was inedible. Nuclear waste disguised as food. But I was hungry, man! I ate it anyway with no ill effects.

It was great, but I spent most of my time visiting with folks. Would love to know where the killer chile colorado burrito was served. Wait...was it Colorado Blvd.?

	11:43pm Dean: I left LA in 2001. Al's shut down shortly thereafter. I haven't gotten over it. Al's was my home venue.
	11:43pm northguineahills: @coel: The tick species that carry lyme here in FL, are very rare, and don't survive very well (for reasons I've yet to to research), so, until they evolve, (the bacteria or the tick, I'm mostly safe for now).

	10:04pm coelacanth∅: Larry it's beautiful for sure...as is japanese knotweed. actually i routinely try to destroy lots of very beautiful plants. asiatic bittersweet is another; and wysteria; and "tree of heaven" (which is really a tree to hell) etc etc
	10:05pm Funky16Corners: I'm a fan of some things most people hate, i.e. dandelions, clover, sweetpea vines
	10:05pm northguineahills: For our controlled field sites, we use bamboo as water breaks to keep floating aquatic vegetation from blowing to one side of our berms. My boss has a stand he keeps on chopping down for use at work, planting, or for material. We uproot them before the dry season so they don't spread (they don't spread too well in standing water).
	10:09pm coelacanth∅: you could keep bamboo under control to some degree by burying a barrier around it on all sides - no splits or holes; metal; strong,thick plastic or concrete... i'm not sure how deep to go. not as deep as with knotweed i know that.
	10:10pm still b/p: I had a nice potted Japanese arrow bamboo plant years ago but neglected to pull it indoors before a freeze. I would place clusters of that if I was to design a yard and patio space.
	10:10pm northguineahills: we have infestation of knotweed at some of our sites. Bamboo and knotweed are also both edible.
	10:11pm Funky16Corners: I had to look knotweed up. I recognize it.
	10:12pm coelacanth∅: i don't make an effort to kill dandelions, and i plant lots and lots of clover. those are invasive but nowhere near at the level of these other plants.

	10:14pm Franco Twinkie: Our bamboo problem is at the back of our property and I simply let our tenant deal with it. He's young and works in a nursery, so it's just like been at work for him.
	10:15pm northguineahills: I have no lawn, just a garden, natural wildflowers, and otherwise natural undergrowth and trees, (no mowing or monoculture).
	10:15pm coelacanth∅: knotweed's apparently helpful to treat lyme disease. i haven't tried it, aside from frequent physical contact with it.

	10:20pm coelacanth∅: Franco -probably. tests come back "inconclusive"; in other words some strains say negative and some say "not negative - at risk". i've pulled deer ticks out of my body several times but never noticed a bruise. (i also don't bruise that easily) i have all the symptoms but those symptoms are shared by many ailments.
	10:20pm still b/p: Embedded (but not engorged) tick count for the season: 1 deer tick, 1 wood tick. That's way ahead of any other year in memory.
	10:23pm coelacanth∅: i haven't found any yet this year, and i've been either up to my hips in grass or over my head in brush, shrubs and trees a lot since april. Lucky so far.
	10:24pm Funky16Corners: We had to tell our sons to stay off the wooded paths this summer. They started coming home with ticks, nothing embedded thankfully
	10:25pm Franco Twinkie: I've read about it, for sure, but never actually talked to anyone who has it. I remember reading a piece in the New Yorker about John Lurie who suffers from it. He made it sound horrible.
	10:26pm northguineahills: Thankfully lyme disease is rarely found this far south. Bu I'm also very keen on trying any edible plants I come across. (although many require much blanching or other preperation). Palmettos are everywhere here, just cut the stalks open and they taste like watercress/celery, no prep needed....
	10:26pm northguineahills: Since I was a kid, I was taught that if I got a tick, to take a knife, put it over a flame, and dig it out....

There was this hippie store in Sierra Madre that was importing, get this, bamboo floor mats from Asia. Guess what came along for the ride? In the park they have a bronze statue of a big spider! People had to have it explained to them that most of the hawks around here weigh less than 6 pounds and while they may kill a bird or squirrel or two, your puppies are safe.
