Larry it's beautiful for sure...as is japanese knotweed.
actually i routinely try to destroy lots of very beautiful plants. asiatic bittersweet is another; and wysteria; and "tree of heaven" (which is really a tree to hell) etc etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm a fan of some things most people hate, i.e. dandelions, clover, sweetpea vines
Avatar 10:05pm
northguineahills:

For our controlled field sites, we use bamboo as water breaks to keep floating aquatic vegetation from blowing to one side of our berms. My boss has a stand he keeps on chopping down for use at work, planting, or for material. We uproot them before the dry season so they don't spread (they don't spread too well in standing water).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
coelacanth∅:

you could keep bamboo under control to some degree by burying a barrier around it on all sides - no splits or holes; metal; strong, thick plastic or concrete... i'm not sure how deep to go. not as deep as with knotweed i know that.
Avatar 10:10pm
still b/p:

I had a nice potted Japanese arrow bamboo plant years ago but neglected to pull it indoors before a freeze. I would place clusters of that if I was to design a yard and patio space.
Avatar 10:10pm
northguineahills:

we have infestation of knotweed at some of our sites. Bamboo and knotweed are also both edible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Funky16Corners:

I had to look knotweed up. I recognize it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't make an effort to kill dandelions, and i plant lots and lots of clover. those are invasive but nowhere near at the level of these other plants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
coelacanth∅:

(really clover's not much more invasive than grass, by my experience)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Our bamboo problem is at the back of our property and I simply let our tenant deal with it. He's young and works in a nursery, so it's just like been at work for him.
Avatar 10:15pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

knotweed's apparently helpful to treat lyme disease. i haven't tried it, aside from frequent physical contact with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, Do you have lyme disease?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco -probably. tests come back "inconclusive"; in other words some strains say negative and some say "not negative - at risk". i've pulled deer ticks out of my body several times but never noticed a bruise. (i also don't bruise that easily) i have all the symptoms but those symptoms are shared by many ailments.
Avatar 10:20pm

Embedded (but not engorged) tick count for the season: 1 deer tick, 1 wood tick. That's way ahead of any other year in memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm

i haven't found any yet this year, and i've been either up to my hips in grass or over my head in brush, shrubs and trees a lot since april. Lucky so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

We had to tell our sons to stay off the wooded paths this summer. They started coming home with ticks, nothing embedded thankfully
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Franco Twinkie:

I've read about it, for sure, but never actually talked to anyone who has it. I remember reading a piece in the New Yorker about John Lurie who suffers from it. He made it sound horrible.
Avatar 10:26pm
northguineahills:

Thankfully lyme disease is rarely found this far south. Bu I'm also very keen on trying any edible plants I come across. (although many require much blanching or other preperation). Palmettos are everywhere here, just cut the stalks open and they taste like watercress/celery, no prep needed....
Avatar 10:26pm
northguineahills:

Coel, The brown recluse was introduced to this continent in the 1960's just at few miles from here. There was this hippie store in Sierra Madre that was importing, get this, bamboo floor mats from Asia. Guess what came along for the ride? In the park they have a bronze statue of a big spider! Also, they have the worlds largest Wisteria.

Been listening off and on all night. Wish this were a regular gig.

Where in Sierra Madre was the former hippie store? I love that story!

Had to be on Baldwin Ave. in that little strip of shops way above Foothill.
  11:14pm
Dean:

Buddy of mine lives on Orange Grove, I think, not far.
  11:16pm
Dean:

Used to be a "hippie store" (we called it a head shop) across the street from my junior high school in Whittier, Hair Boutique, c.'73. I got a real kick out of it.
  11:16pm
chresti:

Funky- there are hawks on patrol-there have been incidents with little dogs getting snatched but usually they go for rabbits and blonde pony tails
  11:17pm
Dean:

Not far from there in '78 I started work at a record store where the manager played disco incessantly. I fucking hated it, except for Giorgio Moroder's contributions. By now I've adjusted to, for instance, the Bee Gees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - We just had a neighborhod hysteria (on the NextDoor board) about hawks that could supposedly carry off fairly large dogs. People had to have it explained to them that most of the hawks around here weigh less than 6 pounds and while they may kill a bird or squirrel or two, your puppies are safe.

Oh, Hey Dean. Gotta tell you. last night had a chile colorado burrito from this place in East Pasadena that was inedible. Nuclear waste disguised as food. But I was hungry, man! I ate it anyway with no ill effects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Funky16Corners:

That said, we had one kill a mourning dove out in front of our house. It looked like the dove exploded
  11:23pm
Dean:

I miss LA nuclear waste Mexican fare, FT. I was in town two or three weeks ago to attend a buddy's birthday party in Arcadia at Villa Catrina. It was great, but I spent most of my time visiting with folks. Would love to know where the killer chile colorado burrito was served. Wait...was it Colorado Blvd.?
  11:25pm
Dean:

I'm noticing that comment boards in general, but this show in particular, tend to prompt discussion of good local food.

The great Dennis Coffey originally co-produced this group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yes indeed. Great album, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Jeff Ash:

I haven't picked it up, perhaps fearing I will be that guy, the Dennis Coffey completist.
  11:27pm
chresti:

Yeah , the tiny chihuahuas and poodles are prey for red tail hawks and coyotes here.

I’ve seen a coyote carrying a cat on the street in LA before-
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Funky16Corners:

You could do a lot worse than finding all the records Coffey worked on
  11:27pm

@funky Larry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - coyotes are starting to show up around here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Jeff Ash:

Oh, I know. I already have a bunch of his records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Franco Twinkie:

You got it! Super Burrito - just west of Rosemead Blvd. Actually, I really like the place, most things are good in that greasy-good kinda way. I just decided to try something new instead of the same old, same old, and lost. No biggie! I'll be back there next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Funky16Corners:

Jeff, were you listening the night I played the Del Shannon record co-written by Coffey?
  11:30pm
Dean:

Just realized, FT, that you wrote "inedible," when I read, "incredible." You meant nuclear waste quite literally. Accordingly, would love to know what to avoid!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

Word.
  11:31pm
Dean:

Rosemead makes me think of Bahuka, no longer there, I believe.
  11:32pm
Dean:

Eh, Bahooka.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yes, It's gone. Now it's some sort of buffet. Haven't been inside. Still looks pretty damn crazy from the outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Jeff Ash:

Checking it out now. Don't think I caught that show. Nice!
  11:34pm

Bahooka was a hoot. As was Kelbo's in Hollywood. Heard NON at the latter. One amazing evening.

Of course! Non and Monitor really did a special twist on the tiki thing. We went to a reunion type deal of those folks last year downtown L.A.

There's a weird remake of it on the '54' soundtrack. I don't know if they couldn't get the rights or something.

Reading a depressing report by Elizabeth Warren on her visit to the refugee "detention centers", more accurately known as cages. Man......

I left LA in 2001. Al's shut down shortly thereafter. I haven't gotten over it. Al's was my home venue.

@coel: The tick species that carry lyme here in FL, are very rare, and don't survive very well (for reasons I've yet to to research), so, until they evolve, (the bacteria or the tick, I'm mostly safe for now).

You can't imagine what it's like down there now. But, The Box, which is across the street is still carrying the torch when you need to have that type of friction.

@Doc - The first time Brian Eno heard 'I Feel Love' in a club he pegged it as revolutionary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

It was!
  11:53pm

Revolutionary? I'm sorry, but Eno needed to get out more often.
