A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@melinda It started with Karen Armtrong's "Buddha" biography, citing the Pali canon. There are apologists who explain away the various sutras, but it's pretty obviously misogyny to me (although it may not reflect the historical reality of what the Buddha said/did). Then, looking around online, I found this
www.trimondi.de...
...an online book that at first appears to be a "hit piece" on the Dalai Lama, Chinese state propaganda I guessed at first, but then reading it opened a whole can of worms. The Scottish nun June Campbell's account of being in a sexually abusive relation with a 70 year old, deeply revered, supposedly celibate lama (under the guise of being some kind of tantric "consort" ) was really eye opening. She teaches religious studies and women's studies now and is really worth checking out.

@themutante: Some are in Discogs. Some listeners enter the track details that end up in CD databases on line so tracks show up when the CDs are inserted into a computer or player. But the reality is these “CDs” are more akin to homegrown mix tapes and are not real CDs in any way. So it’s a crapshoot at best to find a comprehensive list.

@theCanterburywood-elf: If you are going to come out of nowhere and start accusing Buddhism of being misogynist, as others have stated, this is nothing new. And the main appeal of Buddhism is it’s an alternative to the Judeo-Chistian structure that seems to dominate the Western world. It’s not perfect, but it’s something else.

That said, one of the saddest and sweetest things I have ever seen is a lone tuba player playing his tuba in the Broadway-Lafayette Street subway station about 15 years or so ago.

It was sweet, because he was unaccompanied and passionate. It was sad because the sound was horrible and people were visibly holding their ears. The look on his face was so… “I wanna share my tuba… But I don’t know how?”

@melinda and @cuteCloud The online book I linked is strange, controversial (but full of fascinating references you can follow up yourself). The authors used to tour and work with the Dalai Lama but became convinced that Tibetan vajrayana Buddhism had degenerated into a giant, secretive sex cult... and that the Tibetan clergy-in-exile, hiding behind the friendly face of HH, is using ritual magick to influence world affairs. So make of it what you will...

Trouble -- the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has another interesting-sounding bird-related event coming up on June 21

"Join us for the world premiere of Twilight Chorus (for Humans), a new vocal work composed by Pete M. Wyer. Inspired by MIT professor Shigeru Miyagawa’s theory that human speech evolved from birdsong, Wyer’s score features slowed-down transcripts of birdsong field recordings adapted for a choir of 16 human voices."

Thx for the Times piece recommendation. Makes me wonder what connections there might be between oral antibiotics and autoimmune diseases of the digestive tract, like Crohn's Disease, which my daughter has. Added it to my pile of research.

Tony Humphries really made his name as a DJ at the storied Newark club, Zanzibar (housed in the old Lincoln Motel near the Broad Street train station, now an empty lot). His Zanzibar mixes often feature tracks like that Nina remix.

@Ike: yeah, the Bergers owned it (they're the guys who own lots of rundown motels but also the Robert Treat and a bunch of downtown around Military Park like the MP Bldg, Firemen Ins., and the old Griffith Piano Bldg.). Zanzibar seems like it was actually pretty amazing. It's the lot across from Bears Stadium with a billboard saying something like "AMAZING DEVELOPMENT SITE! CONTACT BRENDAN BERGER!"

I'm glad others found the info useful. I plan to go; should I wear an FMU shirt or a fancier one?

The other thing was a silent bird listening walk in Prospect Park at sunrise and it was quite lovely and I was the only one who showed up besides the organizers because it was pouring rain -- we just walked around slowly, not talking and listening to birds and other sounds.

Dang noon already? Fantastic show THANK YOU.
