@penelope & Bodah Centralites, gruss!
@Tullius, I'm on Mark's side re installing surveillance devices in the home. No judgment, but I do think it's short-sighted and the owners of those conversations don't love us.

I have no idea what I'm listening to - but the idea that humans can make such weird noises is amazeballs! (Can I say "amazeballs" here?)

Richard that's excellent!

I second that emotion
  7:32pm
tullius:

@danb, I'm w/ mark here too, and on most things surveillance based. alexa et. al. is straight voluntary surveillance marketed as not at all surveillance, i.e., bull hockey. But making up new nonsense terms instead of offering solutions is not helping: it's selling something else.
  7:33pm
tullius:

Namely, a new book.

everyone is selling or persuading towards something. dan b is making a great argument for freeform radio here. This is good radio.

Do you think JUUL also has surveillance capabilities?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Dan Bodah:

@tullius, thanks! & you should email Mark and engage over that -- I'm sure he'd like to hear a passionate response to his show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Dan Bodah:

JUUL SHOULD have surveillance capacities! I want to know if my kid is one of the ones vaping in the back of his 8th grade science class

I started in the 8th grade

JakeGould:

Kinda stunned that a speaker designed to monitor everything one said would screw up.

Also, did everyone here about the weird apparent hacking of LinkNYC kiosks? Where on 3rd Avenue in Manhattan block upon block of LinkNYC kiosks were playing a slowed down version of the Mr. Softee theme? gothamist.com...
  7:47pm
JakeGould:

Anyway, I disabled Siri on my phone. So there.
  7:48pm
JakeGould:

Okay, to keep this on topic… Would be funny if all LinkNYC things in NYC were to suddenly playback some throat singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
melinda:

I don't use siri or alexa. On a related note, has anyone seen the movie Her? I started watching it Saturday but couldn't finish, it just seemed lame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
melinda:

@Jake it's hard to top the ice cream truck theme, but that would be even better.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
melinda:

This is very nice
  7:55pm
JakeGould:

The only thing i use voice recognition for is dictation and it works fine. But I have actually tried to use Siri for what it is designed for, and it frustrates more than helps. If I am in the middle of Manhattan and ask it for coffee shops near me, that shouldn’t screw up right? Garbage.

There is a lot of online discussion about how Steve Jobs predicted voice assistants would be a big thing. Thus Siri. But when he died, Apple shelved, delayed and screwed up Siri development. Thus Amazon has won that creepy battle field.

tullius:

sonorous, staccato, challenging, majestic, guttural and with good humor show. kudos!
