Good morning to all! Double Jeff action today for Cecil -- provided the tech gods are kind.

Good morning Jeff^2 and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am
fred:

@tech gods: I know that double-Jeff edition is tempting, but please consider it's for Cecil and save your wrath for later
  9:11am
Listener Robert:

The phone call sounded like the impedance mismatch I got when I plugged a mic into the wrong jack on a cassette recorder. So try another jack.
  9:14am
Doug Schulkind:

The world of Cecil Taylor. This is our world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am
fred:

@tech gods: you made your point, let it go
Avatar 9:29am
Jeff J:

Arrgh. Was I audible at all, folks in radioland?
Avatar 9:35am
Jeff J:

I'm going to take that as a polite no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
fred:

You were very low, with some loud buzzing whenever your voice was louder. Turning the volume helped with the former, but not the latter
Avatar 9:48am
Jeff J:

Thanks Fred. That's probably b/c all the levels are up on my end. Not sure what's happening with our mixer. Believe it or not, we tested out all the tech on Friday to make sure this wouldn't happen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
fred:

Hey, it wouldn't be a double-Jeff D:O without some technical difficulties
Avatar 9:54am
glenn:

holy fuck, because finally spring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am
Jeff Golick:

Ayup. Hiya, @glenn.
  10:00am
Dean:

Put down the comb and tissue paper, other Jeff.
Avatar 10:03am
Jeff J:

@Dean - the tech gods mock us, alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
fred:

"Excursion on a Wobbly Rail" is a very appropriate track title for D:O, especially today
Avatar 10:06am
glenn:

jeff g, i reccomend the books of sam wiebe. noirish stuff set in vancouver. the first book, the invisible dead, has a kinda funny jazzy joke, as follows [sort of]
shay - "who are we listening to"?
dave - "bill kng. probably the greatest white jazz musician ever"
shay - "so 400th overall then"?
Avatar 10:06am
glenn:

recommend.

Hey, made it for Jeff squared, and Cecil (never square), hiya!

hi jeff, hi jeff, good morning everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Jeff Golick:

Ha, glenn. Thanks for rec!

Heya, @doctorjazz and @JtotheK!
Avatar 10:21am
Jeff J:

Hey all - sorry it didn't work out this morning for double Jeff action. The tech gods are cruel and fickle masters, but they've still left plenty of great cecil music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am
fred:

I only got to see Cecil once, but I'm glad I did. He was a force
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
Jeff Golick:

When/where was that, @fred?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
fred:

@Jeff: 2011 in Paris (cité de la musique). It was supposed to be with Amiri Baraka, but they had a fight before the show and performed separately (Cecil went second). Two great people, two fiery tempers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am
Jeff Golick:

Wow, yeah.

I am grateful that Jeff J pretty much made us see Cecil every time he played out in NYC from the mid-1990s on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am
Jeff Golick:

(He caught more shows than I did.)
  10:38am
Dean:

2011 is around the time he played Grace Cathedral in SF, a show I missed, but a buddy saw it. Said it was sublime. Taylor played the space.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
fred:

One think that struck me was the hostility from some musicians (especially Jazz pianists) at work when Cecil died. Ornette didn't get that all or nothing vibe, he got at least grudging respect. Cecil touched a nerve
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am
Jeff Golick:

That's interesting, @fred. My (self-selected) sources were all so glowing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
fred:

I think it's also because Jazz is so conservative over here. Tied to the postwar glory days, and very expensive. Going to a Jazz venue is a status thing here, basically junior opera house. It's reductive of course, but the conservative vibe runs deep, even with amateur jazz musicians

Gotta go: Lea Bertucci is playing in Paris. She'll be playing much later, but I want to catch the opening sets

hello Jeff(s?) & OUTies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am

Very cool, @fred! Enjoy and thanks for being here.

@Sem: always happy to oblige.

@coelacanth∅! Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am
coelacanth∅:

glad i'm catching some of this. i still haven't listened to the first DO tribute
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Jeff Golick:

Cecil Taylor time is outside of time, so you're good, @coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
coelacanth∅:

haha true. i have to get to it before the good archive disappears though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
coelacanth∅:

i have this on a different album. ..or, am i imagining things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Jeff Golick:

You hear a considerable difference, @coel, in the different archive formats?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
Jeff Golick:

@coel: looks like it was also on a label comp, but I think that's it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
coelacanth∅:

Jeff, i do. also my laptop that isn't dying that i usually use for streaming music wont play the pop-up at all.
my laptop that's hanging on by pure miracle plays the pop-up, but it causes problems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
Jeff Golick:

"Honey, they're playing our song."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
coelacanth∅:

but yes i do think the pop-up sounds pretty crappy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
Jeff Golick:

I always just listen via pop-up, so it's a case of not knowing what I'm missing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
coelacanth∅:

oh i'm sorry - i have winged serpent! i'm a little out of it. was looking at the track as if it were the album.never mind.
  11:32am
Stepchild:

Love love love Cecil’s orchestra works
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Stepchild! Yeah, that's a fave here, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
coelacanth∅:

....maybe if i could get the pop-up to work on this computer it'd sound okay; but on my old macbook it sounds pretty bad. (& it cuts out periodically and stops sometimes and causes other functions to freeze) the "128MP3" archives sound great on it, (as do music files played using "mplayer") so it's not a sound problem with the computer.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40am
doctorjazz:

I do think the 128MP3 sounds a bit better, but, in many situations (work, my phone) I can't open it, and do just fine with the Pop Up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Jeff Golick:

@coel: at first glance, I thought your avatar was this - www.discogs.com...

@david w! So glad to see you here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am

Fair warning: going overtime again this show.
  11:52am
Dean:

But I thought Cecil Taylor was outside of time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am
Jeff Golick:

He is, but I'm not.

Cecil Taylor is to time what Mobius is to strips.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm

Not mutually exclusive events, @Stanley. Hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Stanley:

*was*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
david w:

Wow, you're playing both parts. Nobody does this. You are my radio hero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Jeff Golick:

Heh. Scott McDowell did it some time back; I'm just following in his footsteps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Jeff Golick:

@david w: Have you heard any of Doug's shows when he combines parts 1 & 2 of singles (usually), and plays both?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
david w:

Yes, you both ignore time limits I see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Jeff Golick:

Where we're going, we won't need...time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
david w:

Thanks for killing time. You can't unhear this. Mad gorgeous.
