	8:55am dk50b: I know it yesterday, but since no one answered Clay's call for info on the Oneida Community, I feel obliged since I learned about it in college. As Medson said, founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848, they were "Perfectionists", believing Jesus had already returned to earth, therefore they could establish the Millennial Kingdom. This included communalism, complex marriage, male continence, and expanded rights for women. en.wikipedia.org... I didn't realize that other Noyesian Communities were established, including one started 1853 in Newark. The original Community fled to Niagara Falls, Canada in 1879 with Noyes's arrest imminent, and fell apart soon after. However, Oneida Silverware was their most successful venture, though no longer manufactured in NY.

As Medson said, founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848, they were "Perfectionists", believing Jesus had already returned to earth, therefore they could establish the Millennial Kingdom. This included communalism, complex marriage, male continence, and expanded rights for women. en.wikipedia.org... I didn't realize that other Noyesian Communities were established, including one started 1853 in Newark. The original Community fled to Niagara Falls, Canada in 1879 with Noyes's arrest imminent, and fell apart soon after. However, Oneida Silverware was their most successful venture, though no longer manufactured in NY.
