NOEL COWARD & GERTRUDE LAWRENCE
-- from "BRING ON THE GIRLS", Bolton & Wodehouse, 1953
reprinted by Limelight Editions, 1984
"Get this book!" -- H.L.
[Guy Bolton and Plum Wodehouse are visiting Gertrude Lawrence to discuss
her upcoming role in OH, KAY!]
On the piano in her sitting room there was a photograph of a child
dancing.
It caught their eyes immediately as they came in.
"Is that you?" enquired Plum.
"Yes, dearies, that's me at the time of my debut in the
Brixton Pantomime."
"You took to the stage early?"
"For a good year before that photo was taken I'd been learning the
A.B.C.
of my trade from dear old Italia Conti."
"What a lot of distinguished pupils she had."
"I'll tell you a little tale about one of them. It was the annual show
that was put on for friends and relatives every June. I was just under
ten - my birthday's the fourth of July - so you can imagine my surprise
when, at the first rehearsal, Madame Conti's assistant handed me a part.
Most of the children were 'pixies' or 'villagers' but I was to be a
character. I was to see my name on the program :
'JANE.... Gertrude Lawrence.'
The theater has given me a lot of thrills but never one quite as big as
that moment when I held my first part in my hand.
" 'JANE ' it said on the cover. Jane was one of a party of children who
steal out into the garden on Midsummer Night and find the flowers have
changed into Little People and are giving a ball, a crafty lead into "The
Dance of the Flowers," chief feature of this juvenile turkey. I delayed
before turning the slightly battered blue cover, savoring the great
moment. I opened it. It wasn't what you would call a hell of a part -
it consisted of a single line: "Oh, look, children! Pansy has turned into
a Pierrot and he's dancing with Columbine!"
"I was standing there weighing the problem of how best to characterize
Jane when I heard Madame Conti's voice say: 'That's your cue, Gertie.'
Good God! I had missed my first cue. Properly flustered, I went charging
onto the stage and said: 'Jane pants.'
"'Jane pants?? You don't _say_ that, dear. Yhat's the stage direction.
You've been running and you're excited.'
" 'Of course, I was upset at being late on cue, I just read it without
thinking.'
" 'Well, you _must_ think. Never do anything on stage without thinking.
Now make the entrance again and say the line.'
"'Oh,look, children! Pansy has changed into a Pierrot and he's dancing with
Concubine."
"The brats sniggered. Madame Conti explained patiently that the name
was 'Columbine,' adding that if I said 'Concubine' on the afternoon of
the performance some of the parents might not think this was a very nice
school to send their child to.
"'Whenever you're flustered take a long, deep breath and pause. Always
remember a slight pause never hurts.' I paused. I took a long, deep
breath. And as I did so I heard a childish voice repeat my line, reading
it beatifully with wonder and excitement, and just that little catch in
the breath that was indicated by 'Jane pants.' 'Don't you think, Madame
Conti,' the voice went on, and it had changed now to a budding baritone,
' Don't you think it would be _safer_ if I said the line?"
"I was stunned, speechless, unable to find words in which to protest.
" ' Yes, dear,' I heard Madame Conti say. ' I think perhaps it would
be. I'm sure Gertie won't mind. Give Noel the part, will you, dear?'
" 'She doesn't need to,' said Noel grandly. 'I know it.'"
"It wasn't --?" exclaimed Guy.
"Yes, it was, duckie, Noel Coward -- the little ham. If I had had a blunt
instrument in my hand at the time the English-speaking stage would have
lost one of its most brilliant talents."
"He just calmly walked off with your first part?"
"Darned unprofessional, I call it," laughed Plum.
"Yes, but wait boys. For years I've had a dream. In it I'm playing
opposite
him and, on opening night, just as we're coming to his favorite line,
his most amusing bon mot, I say it myself and give him the cue. Then when
he's left flat on his bumpty, I whisper, ' Come on, Jane, old girl, let's
hear you pant.'
"And let me tell you, it's coming, Gertie's Revenge." She waved a hand
at her desk where stood a photograph of the distinguished
author-actor-composer lovingly inscribed. "He's writing a play in which
I'm to be with him. He calls it PRIVATE LIVES and it's to be ready by
the time I'm finished with your show."
"Well, I look forward to that opening night, I trust it's a long way
off," said Plum.
"So do I," said Gertie. "and now you boys help yourselves to drinks and
tell me about this OH, KAY."
