btw, thanks to everyone who pledged and helped out in other ways for the Marathon! Did very well, even if the goal wasn't met (personally, I think it was set a bit too high, but that's just me).

is " the forest is shaking and swaying" related at all to certain fungi?
Avatar 7:23pm
Richard S:

Depends on what fungus you're taking, Linda Lee....
Avatar 7:23pm
Linda Lee:

sure could be, iirc!
Avatar 7:24pm
Linda Lee:

indeed, must be fungi specific.
Avatar 7:29pm
βrian:

Reminds me a bit of the Rustavi Choir. Is it Georgian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Dan Bodah:

This is Albanian iso-polyphony (the "iso" is the drone)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Dan Bodah:

But yes, reminds me a lot of Georgian polyphony as well
  7:33pm
Listener Robert:

Blame me, Richard S. When it became clear enough that the 2017 Marathon was going to easily exceed its $1.3M goal, I wrote that Ken would be kicking himself for not setting it higher.
Avatar 7:34pm
Linda Lee:

gorgeous ~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Dan Bodah:

THANK YOU all who pledged!!

Pledges are still trickling in, so we hope we will reach the $1.5 goal eventually even though we are not talking about it on air anymore. We still did better than last year so far, so that's good. We're not kidding about trying to get into the black -- out of deficit spending on yearly operating costs.
Avatar 7:37pm
Richard S:

Well, perhaps it encouraged more people to pledge, and pledge more. WFMU needs every dollar it can get, so I suppose it's all good. Just don't want any tears over not meeting the goal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
dale:

i thought the last song was inuit or american indian
Avatar 7:42pm

I assumed the iso stood for the International Standards Organization.

Dan, one of the few people that might even know more about ethnography (that I encounter virtually or otherwise) then I.
Avatar 7:48pm
βrian:

@NGH: You're planning to geo-locate all the tracks being played during next year's marathon in real-time, right? Like, that would be way cool ...
Avatar 7:48pm
Linda Lee:

wow ~~ orosei vocal style is astounding.
  7:50pm
Listener Robert:

You're right, Mr. Bodah. I keep thinking last year's goal was $1.3M, but it was $1.2M.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Tommy in Neversink:

Loved that
Avatar 7:53pm
βrian:

"Mouth of the night"?
Avatar 7:53pm
northguineahills:

@βrian: Just the pledger's location based on their postal zip code. International addresses might be trickier. (location will be based on the centroid of the given zip code or in international addresses, city limits centroid). Songs themselves would be tricky w/o the appropriate metadata, but that really sounds like a fun project.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
chris:

thanks, Dan! gorgeous selections tonight!
Avatar 7:56pm
βrian:

It's always the metadata. And how to clean it, and how to normalize it. Google's API has some foo in that regard, but things can go astray in a hurry.
Avatar 7:59pm
Richard S:

With a world map on a computer screen, you don't really need to get down to "village" level. Country and region will do fine for locating a singing style.

TransPacific Sound Paradise could do it, too....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
Dan Bodah:

Thanks all!
Avatar 7:59pm

I've got to get cooking for my habibti. Thanks, Dan B.
Avatar 8:00pm
northguineahills:

@Richard S, well, it could be an interactive map. And there is the question of the whether to place it where it was recorded or where the performers are from, and if they're from multiple countries...????

Thanks Dan!
