It is/was officially the Uyghur Autonomous Region, and was until recently majority Uyghur, but China has done a whole Russification thing and moved many Han Chinese to the area in the last two decades, and there is now major repression of the Uyghur.

(I may have cribbed this from a comment or three in a BBC special on the former genre.) Agreed on the deep humanity in the core of Kraftwerk.
