I think of early 1970s psych folk when I think of "rural psychedelia"...hippies out in the field haha. RIP Mr. Barlow for his work with the Dead and Electronic Freedom Foundation. We need EFF now more than ever.

Could have picked one where Bob remembered the words!
  1:13am
MONEYBAG$:

Bobby only remembered Me and My Uncle all the way through, which is why they played it 1419 times
Avatar 1:13am
Jeff Conklin:

Bob remembering lyrics is the most un-Grateful Dead thing imaginable.
  1:18am
Agent Peter:

You're thinking of 80's Bobby..
  1:22am
Hippie Jesus:

Has anyone here been listening to the Cocaine & Rhinestones podcast: https://cocaineandrhinestones.com/ The Murder Ballad Of Spade Cooley (episode 3) and Rusty & Doug Kershaw: The Cajun Way (episode 13) are well worth your time. A good bit of Neil Young recording stories in the Kershaw episode.
  1:22am
Mark R:

Wasn't Bob's inability to remember his words precisely the way he wrote them the reason Robert Hunter strongly suggested he work with Barlow instead?
  1:22am
MONEYBAG$:

It's hard not to think about 80s Bobby
  1:23am
Ryab:

Great for my drive home :)
  1:27am
MONEYBAG$:

I think Hunter got pissed off at him for adding a dumb line to Sugar Magnolia and that was the end
  1:30am
Mark R:

Yeah something like that is what I heard, Moneybag$. I guess not forgetting words as much as improvising them, and Hunter thought of his words as sacred canon, not to be messed with.
  1:42am
J:

I'll take Bobby forgetting lyrics over John Mayer's weird American Idol voice any day of the week
  1:43am
J:

The guy can play a guitar, but I wish he wouldn't sing. It's a show ruiner
  1:45am
Mark R:

He is a surprisingly good guitar player. I saw him play with Clapton a few years ago and he more than held his own. He didn't sing.
Avatar 1:45am
Jeff Conklin:

That's my biggest issue with DeadCo. His singing kills me.
  1:46am
saucerful:

Kills as in sucks, or kills as in slays?
Avatar 1:47am
Jeff Conklin:

Bad kills. I can't take it.
  1:47am
saucerful:

Ah, too bad...
Avatar 1:48am
Jeff Conklin:

Eh, it's fine. Saves me from shelling out big $$ to see those shows...
  1:49am
saucerful:

haha Yes, let's look at the bright side!
  1:50am
Hippie Jesus:

Loving this Headroom track!
  1:51am
J:

@Jeff yeah it's so bad. I went to the Hollywood Bowl shows last year with an open mind (and after months of blind shit talking, on principle. It's John Mayer) and while I enjoyed the shows on many levels, his shitty voice was like a bad taste in my mouth that lasted way too long. No one needs a Mayer version on a Jerry tune stuck in their head for weeks on end; but it happened. Trump's America, I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  1:53am
J:

Just say it: John Mayer is the actual worst. There are so many better people they could have gotten to fill those shoes. Ah, I shouldn't have gotten started on this...
  1:53am
J:

I can deal with his playing. Actually sorta dug some of the shit he was doing, but he's also a Berklee dude so
  1:54am
Tidy666:

John mayer is lacking in the vocal dept.not so inspired.
  1:56am
J:

His voice has too much "emotion" for me. Also frosted tips
  1:58am
Tidy666:

Johnny k fell by the wayside.jerry g is gone...saw john in Ithaca...20people present!19 minute bird song.vs.arenas full of bad yesterdays!
  2:05am
saucerful:

Yeah, I meant Electronic Frontier Foundation...
  2:09am
Tidy666:

People always disrespect the grateful dead...but they sure do get comments!love your work mr.Conklin!thanks!
  2:12am
dave b.:

Mayer grew on me.
He came to the band my accident. Weir played with him while Mayer was filling in hosting one of the
late-night television shows.
They clicked.
John K. was a good fit with Furthur but I think Mayer was more widely accepted by some of the other core GD members.
These guys are in their golden years,
Enjoy whats left of it.
So long as there are still original members of the band involved, it still gets my interest.
John Barlows contribution to the legacy of the GD is well documented and will continue in the music.

Rest in Peace
  2:17am
Tidy666:

Thanks Dave b.you captured the spirit of g.d.as long as there are living members...thank you .
  2:21am
J:

@dave it's hard to enjoy what's left when Mayer sings. When he's not, it's pretty decent. But, overall, Dead & Co have been my least favorite iteration. Sad that it will probably be the last too
  2:22am
J:

No matter, I am first and foremost a GRATEFUL DEAD fan. These other things are just... well, other things.
  2:25am
?:

Good Morning Jeff & everybody & Happy Birthday Mr. Conklin!
  2:25am
Tidy666:

We will sing dead songs around the end times camp fire...broke down, bird, franklins, etc, etc, etc!
  2:25am
Mark R:

Nothing compares to the actual Jerry-still-alive Grateful Dead. The surviving members have every right to keep playing the Dead's music, experimenting with different members (I remember when Joan Osborne was in there for a hot minute), a lot of people seem to enjoy it, so what the hell. But of course, it's NOT the Grateful Dead.
  2:28am
dave b.:

The Grateful Dead ended the day Jerry passed away. Its been "other things' from that point on. Still, "other things' Other ones" etc contain much of the musical DNA.

I would hope that Mayer will soon go on to resume his own music career.
With that, there will be more of something from these guys. Ratdog would be a possibility for Bob. Phil Lesh is hunkered down in his own
projects.
Mickey and Billy will stay busy.
  2:30am
J:

@dave b. Exactly!
  2:32am
J:

As Jeff pointed out, the upshot of not being too stoked on these other things is... save money haha. I can't fathom having to tolerate Mayer for a full tour. Yeesh
  2:33am
Mark R:

Meanwhile the last Dead song ended about an hour ago, and we're still talking about 'em. Is there no love for these brilliant acoustic warriors Jeff has so carefully curated for us this past hour?
  2:33am
J:

I do think Dead & Co is the last stop though. They're gonna wring every penny out of this cash cow that they can. THAT is what these tours are about anyway. Def not the money. Shit, Bobby even said so. Kinda gross
  2:35am
Tidy666:

Dry humpin the cash cow!20 bucks is 20 bocks!
  2:37am
J:

@Mark good point; though as someone else pointed out, the Dead certainly bring out the discourse lol
  2:39am
J:

Actually I take it back: the DeadCo tours are about T-shirts
  2:43am
dave b.:

Jeff's show always has bands on that I never heard before. It draws me in to keep listening.
The is the beauty and charm of a great DJ on free form radio.
It's like being taught by a brilliant teacher/professor.

Real radio, real people.
  2:44am
Mark R:

Nice, Dave. I concur.
  2:44am
J:

Agreed! One of my favorite shows on FMU for this reason
  2:50am
Stefan:

Good Moning Jeff, thanks a lot!

Thanks for the tunes Mr Conklin!
