Hello from Wisconsin, where we're about to go back into the deep freeze through the weekend. We gather for some heat from Mr. Larry Grogan!

I like this GK&P...don't think I've heard it. Did it do anything in '66?

Hey SBP! According to Billboard R&B not a thing. Big record on the Northern Soul scene though

Mrs Testify was out tonight so the Grogan boys had a big greasy pizza with anchovies

Psst. You don’t “spin” things into the warp and weft. That’s weaving. ;D

I'm having a roasted vegetable pizza (that started froze) and I added butternut squash and pesto quinoa on top.

Speaking of 1966 music, that's one of those years with a pretty extraordinary fun and interesting line-up for the Billboard Top 100. I'm biased, of course, by memories and nostalgia and the follow-up appreciation and broader history of pop & rock. But, I'm tellin' ya...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Funky16Corners:

1966 is my pick for the best year of the 60s. It really represents a sweet spot for stylistic growth and transitions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
coelacanth∅:

i've said before i think the renaissance of modern music was from 1966 through 1977. ...am i being too generous to go up to '77? maybe '75.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
coelacanth∅:

(of course this is greatly influenced by my own preferences!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

If you include 77 you get punk in full flower and the birth of new wave
Avatar 10:33pm
still b/p:

Guy I used to work with would say "we got ripped off...shafted" because our junior high through young adult years were in a period of poor music -- the 70s. I said no no no. You just weren't looking or weren't aware of the range. It wasn't just bubble gum and disco. (And even some of that found redemption in my ears later.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, plenty to love in the 70s. Some night I'm going to do a show composed entirely of high quality disco and stylish modern soul from the 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
coelacanth∅:

right. and i'm a big fan - up to '79 or '80 maybe 81 latest.
but aside from punk/new wave there was a general shift, starting sometime mid-70s toward less creativity and more marketability. punk was the only bright spot, i think, after rock became bravado and formulaic, and disco came.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Funky16Corners:

I think the record industry was cranked up on cocaine and high profits. I always look to the packaging of records as a touchstone. They were doing crazy things with record jackets in the mid to late 70s that must have cost a fortune with very little return. By the early 80s MCA was shoving double albums into single sleeves to save money
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth∅:

this song - one version or another, gets played either in my house or via the jukebox at the pub, more than once/week. Roberta was my first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah i got some of those who reissues on mca. good deal for poor people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

I have to play the original 1967 Compared to What by Les McCann, two years before his duet with Eddie Harris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Funky16Corners:

Actually 1966 www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
coelacanth∅:

to be clear - i like a lot of music from every year of the 70s; including some cheesy rock, cheesy prog and shallow disco! i'm just saying it wasn't a time for blossoming creativity in most of the industry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Funky16Corners:

Agreed
Avatar 10:44pm
still b/p:

I hope Roberta included numbers like Compared to What when she was singing live...and not just the big later softer hits.
She's 80 -- still performing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

-and the 70s was a fantastic time for reggae

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm

now i'm thinking maybe i've never even heard the Les McCann version, without Eddie Harris
...the live one with Harris is straight up Orgasmic though! it gets people drumming on the bar every time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

sbp i wouldn't buy that; i could make my own though!

Distaff??? My fiber Love is rubbing off on you tonight:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

Is distaff a term used in the world of yarn?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Funky16Corners:

@C 10:48 - I'm shocked that the original version by McCann isn't better known. As far as I can tell Gene McDaniels never recorded his own
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
coelacanth∅:

that first take also has an excellent cover of a Leonard Cohen song, hey that's no way to say goodbye. but yeah the whole album -whew! very moving
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Parq:

A hoe-down. There's a truly awful pun in there, but I'm too weary to think it up

In spinning with a spindle. It’s a tall thing that holds fiber. Isn’t there a Distaff Day or a St. Distaff day?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

i have to hear the Les McCann one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

I'll put it on the list
Avatar 10:57pm

We could all turn into my Dad later...up with insomnia and late night TV and thinking the country music collection is lookin' pretty good. He was trying to decide last year between that and some one of the loudly pitched gizmos or products.

distaff -- a staff for holding the flax, tow, or wool in spinning. didn'tknow that definition, only the other.

(actually that first comma shouldn't be there)

I recognize this done by someone else on the record player in To Sir With Love. Mindbenders.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

The Mindbenders covered it in the movie

I wisht I'da heard that inaugural spin. I'd have thought, "Oh. Things will be good here."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

heh i thought sbp was calling the coincidence, since we just heard Lulu, a mindbender
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

Wonderful show, thanks!
