Really, a lot of this music is about the evils of monopoly: you can be as idiosyncratic/awful as you like if you have a captive audience, especially a paying one.

Perhaps that's one reason Prohibition stays, but it's not all of it---Kulturkampf is a big part of it now, and at the beginning it was all of it. No surprise: almost all societies try to restrict some intoxicants and not others, and it's o.k., they've a right to do it, because everyone knows that 'You belong to the tribe.' is most definitely both affinative _and_ possessive.
History really is nightmarish in modern terms, not entirely so by any means, but solidly so.
