I am forever in Mr Hammond's debt for creating such a wonderful noise
  10:13pm
Dean:

So, so love Charles Earland's grooves. Wish I'd been smart and old enough in '72 to head to Hermosa Beach for a gig like this.

[Gary: Loved the Nina segment of your show, all I got to hear.]

Did have the good fortune of hearing Jimmy Smith many times, though. Still miss him.

As much as I love Hammond I have never been lucky enough to see any of my idols play live.

Oh, yeah, I'm here, too. Digging that Bobby Bryant too much to type.

Smith once told me to slow down with the martinis. The show was in Hollywood at the old Catalina Bar & Grill space. We were front/center, and there's a two drink minimum. Upon receipt of my second martini, he made the crack from the stage. I recall, too, that he was not in good health, having flown in that day from London(?) with a cold.

Hi Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Jeff Ash:

We are back in the deep freeze in Wisconsin tonight. 4 degrees with a wind chill of 10 below at the moment. However, we would like to state for the record that we did not send the so-called bomb cyclone your way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Funky16Corners:

We are in store for a similar freeze out. Wind, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Jeff Ash:

Wind chills of 10 below to 25 below here through Friday. Temps below zero at night, but a little above zero in the daytime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Jeff Ash:

Which is why we are huddled around the heat of "Testify!"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm pretty screwed if my electricity turns off. no heat; no water, once it runs out; and a very drafty, un/underinsulated apartment with only a rock foundation under part of it and nothing above most of it. it's cold near the floor even when it's 40ºf and not windy.
i'm not worried though, despite the government's comical ("bomb cyclone")efforts to make me panic.
think i'll have a drink!
Avatar 10:45pm

Been finding more peeps interested (or already doing) outside sounds, be it global club bass, or avant. This town keeps on surprising me. When I was indoors, i was wearing my wfmu tortoise tee,
Avatar 10:46pm
northguineahills:

@coel: Why would your electricity turn off? Ice storm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
coelacanth∅:

...i'd really like a big plate of greens though,G!! (they all looked terrible at the store 2 days ago)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Funky16Corners:

I gotta get some collards and cook'em down. It takes patience to do them right but I love them.
  10:48pm
Dean:

Add brown sugar, a little beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
coelacanth∅:

ngh they say high winds a-comin'. old trees...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

We're near the water so we get the wind something crazy.
Avatar 10:53pm
northguineahills:

Weirdest thing, I got off of work around 9pm, and my windshield was iced over (it was 31F/-1C). I had to run the car for a about 10 minutes and find a rag to scrape it off. Never had to do that in FL, especially in the early evening. It's supposed to get down to 25F/-4C tonight, should be fun... (I never had a car in NYC, but it would occasionally get cold down here when I had a car in FL my youthy years)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
melinda:

I am trying to remind myself that my street hasn't lost power for more than a few hours at a time in the last 30 years (according to my neighbors) except for when my tree took out the line in front of my house, and that tree/hazard is now gone.
Avatar 10:54pm
northguineahills:

Usually when it gets cold here, it's a dry cold, so there is very little moisture to freeze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, the map looks like it's getting cold way down south. We lost power for more than a week after Hurricane Sandy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm patient in the kitchen.
... i cut out the thickest parts of the stems of collards, cut them into about 1cm pieces and put them in at least 10 minutes before the rest, so they're nice and tender without overcooking the leafy parts. i add the garlic just before i turn the heat off; add the olive oil on the plate.
if i'm adding ginger i add it near the beginning.
Avatar 10:57pm
northguineahills:

In the last 4 months I've been here, I've only lost power for 5.5 days (Hurricane Irma).

In Brooklyn, I lost power for about 30 minutes due to Sandy.
Avatar 10:57pm
northguineahills:

Damn, coel, now I'm hungry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth∅:

me too i guess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Funky16Corners:

I made shrimp and grits for dinner tonight. Big family fave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Parq:

Ughh, Sandy. We are in the part of lower Manhattan that lost power for days. And we live on the ninth floor! Still, I don't wanna sound whiney, coz I know people lost homes and even lives that week.
  11:06pm
Dean:

Ekseption! Brings to mind Secret Oyster, but also Tomorrow's Gift, an early '70s krautrock band that Mary Wing's show prompted me to recall today. She played a completely unrelated album titled Tomorrow's Gift. Hadn't thought about that record for ages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

it's probably good, but i don't have the data in my memory to imagine what that tastes like! i loved shrimp scampi as a child. that's probably my closest reference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Parq:

By the way, I remember when Buddy's Place opened. It was on W.54th Street east of 5th Avenue. My high school self wanted to go there like anything. (And as the drinking age was stlil 18 in those days, I could have pulled it off. Oh, lamentations for lost opportunties.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Funky16Corners:

@Parq - We're right near some of the worst Sandy destruction down in the south part of Brick and Mantoloking but all we got as some downed trees and power loss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - I make them by cooking bacon, the sauteeing mushrooms and green onions in the grease, then dusting the shrimp in salt/pepper/flour/paprika and tossing them in the pan with some chicken stock, lemon juice and garlic. Serve them with cheese grits and hot sauce
  11:09pm
Dean:

Irwin played Grant Green today. Can't play too much Grant Green.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Funky16Corners:

You certainly can not!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@DEan @11:06 - I have the first Ekseption LP and one 45 that I like a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
coelacanth∅:

Parq yes, perspective. just today, the firehouse siren near where i live has sounded 8 times so far. (i said this earlier but-) a month ago i would've said 2X/week is about average. i can imagine the tragedy that some of my relative neighbors might be dealing with right now.
  11:15pm
Dean:

Then run, don't walk, to Tomorrow's Gift and Release Music Orchestra, both underplayed German prog bands. Secret Oyster was Danish.
Avatar 11:16pm
northguineahills:

Well, it's the same temperature here in Gainesville as it is in Brooklyn, 29F/-2C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Funky16Corners:

Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry that's a whole other world! i won't be making that, but now i can imagine it being very tasty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

It's a fair amount of work (and clean up) but it's so worth it
Avatar 11:18pm
northguineahills:

Usually if it drops below freezing, it does so just before dawn, not this early.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
coelacanth∅:

the work doesn't deter me, but i don't eat bacon or chicken and have never cooked shrimp or grits! (i eat shrimp now & then)
- still it sounds good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Parq:

This has been another landmark show, Larry, but I must go. Hope to catch you next week, but if not, as often in 2018 as possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite Parq! Thanks for listening!
  11:23pm

Damn, there he is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm

That's a great album. Doesn't turn up much.
Avatar 11:27pm
still b/p:

They go beyond the title for a fuller Laugh-In bouquet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry, i'd guess that your collard greens are more exciting than mine too, but i do sometimes deviate and saute the stems with some onions, mushrooms, garlic to add to the steamed leafy parts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - Yes, though I can't imagine trying to capitalize on Laugh In with a 7:23 album cut. Just having some fun, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - start out with bacon, vinegar and sugar, simmer a long time in chicken stock and garlic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Onions, too, and I may be forgetting something else. The recipe is on my ipad upstairs
Avatar 11:34pm
northguineahills:

Ok, I'm off a cleaning.

I have nearly no experience cooking w/ dead animal products (wife's a vegan), but I'm a 'learning myself. I'm only good at cajun-style seafood boils. I just need to transfer that to my east asian fusion cooing, (my other specialty is Mexican fusion).
Avatar 11:35pm
northguineahills:

I'm off to clean before bed, I might not make it back to the comments. Thanks again Larry, and happy new beer ears!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite NGH! Happy New Beers to ye as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
coelacanth∅:

well, i may have in fact had something like that on xmas, now that i think about it. the wife of my older sister's son (whatever title that gives her) brought collards to our potluck festivities; and she came north from a southern,"african american" upbringing.
-and yes, they were delicious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Funky16Corners:

Fortunately our kids love greens, so I'll keep on cooking them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
coelacanth∅:

right on. i may be wrong, but i think the benefits of eating the greens outweighs the potential harm of the bacon fat.
...i wish i'd had greens as a child. (besides the occasional frozen spinach and the even more rare iceberg salad.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Funky16Corners:

Great source of iron among other vitamins and minerals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm

  11:46pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Funky16Corners:

I may have to venture out into the storm for beer tomorrow,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Funky16Corners:

Though I have some nice artisinal cider from the Finger Lakes that I could put on ice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Funky16Corners:

artisanal...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
coelacanth∅:

damn -i have extra beer (probably), liquor, an extra ice scraper (ngh needs an ice scraper)...but i don't have a delivery drone.
  11:50pm
Dean:

Schmartisinal.

Why do I so often find Sonny Phillips' My Black Flower (reissue) in used bins?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't know. I love his stuff, but he's more of a connoisseur's choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I only use artisanal because they're from four or five different orchards/distilleries up by Skaneateles
  11:52pm
Dean:

I mean, Jimmy Ponder!
  11:54pm
Dean:

I can't get enough of Ponder's "Since I Fell for You" from this album: https://www.discogs.com/Jimmy-Ponder-Something-To-Ponder/release/11001801
