	11:31am Dean: Just checked out a bunch of books for my neighbor across the street, a pre-med student at Barnard who spent a semester doing chemistry at Oxford. She wants to study during the holidays, but didn't want to tote about thirty pounds of books in her luggage. Fascinating stuff, quantum and statistical mechanics. But the weird symbols flummox me.

	11:52am Dean: Not exactly the case, @dj, at least not in her case. For one thing, she's undergrad, pre-med. For another, these materials are available to institutions who have licensed access to e-versions. Finally, the current editions of many of these are in "reserve" collections at their respective institutions--so students can reliably access them locally--and she is happy to consult older editions.

My daughter, who's an undergrad bio major, seems to have most of the stuff through school (paid by us, of course) available on line, and even papers and exams seem to happen on line these days.

	11:59am Dean: My institution, Berkeley, has no medical school, though we have been associated with UCSF across the Bay. That relationship might be fading. Columbia, OTOH, does have a med school, but evidently her texts are licensed there. Or she prefers print, which is not unusual for undergrads these days. Got it, @UM! Yes, I like to stay current with new modes of addition. Seems to me these CAPTCHA things should introduce other operations, too.

	11:31am Dean: Just checked out a bunch of books for my neighbor across the street, a pre-med student at Barnard who spent a semester doing chemistry at Oxford. She wants to study during the holidays, but didn't want to tote about thirty pounds of books in her luggage. Fascinating stuff, quantum and statistical mechanics. But the weird symbols flummox me.

	11:52am Dean: Not exactly the case, @dj, at least not in her case. For one thing, she's undergrad, pre-med. For another, these materials are available to institutions who have licensed access to e-versions. Finally, the current editions of many of these are in "reserve" collections at their respective institutions--so students can reliably access them locally--and she is happy to consult older editions.

	11:59am Dean: My institution, Berkeley, has no medical school, though we have been associated with UCSF across the Bay. That relationship might be fading. Columbia, OTOH, does have a med school, but evidently her texts are licensed there. Or she prefers print, which is not unusual for undergrads these days. Got it, @UM! Yes, I like to stay current with new modes of addition. Seems to me these CAPTCHA things should introduce other operations, too.
