Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from December 8, 2017 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

River:

Definitely happy to drink the zombie cult enslaving liquid. :p As much as people laud the BBC and the public service broadcasting culture we have in Europe, there's still nothing as bold and free as WFMU. I feel like Americans do 'weird' much better than Brits. In the US if people want something they find a way to make it happen. Here if we want something and it's not readily available we just complain. Huge generalisation but some truth in it I think.
Avatar 2:37pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Sometime in the 1990s ('97? '98?) There was a short list of "radio WEB-casts" circulating, by some dude at MIT. Obscure stations in faraway lands, and WFMU. First show was T.Coulter, hooked immediately. Every workday, all day, headphones on.
Avatar 2:38pm

I was just thinking about this last night during Nick Name's show. I believe I first heard of FMU through R.Stevie Moore cassettes in the mid '80s. Wasn't able to listen until much more recently, around the time of Hurricane Sandy. It was pretty interesting to experience the hurricane through the WFMU filter, starting with jokes about having to read the weather warnings, into whether the DJ's were going to be able to make it home after their shifts and ultimately into broadcasting (web only) from home and having no information about the world outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
melinda:

I started listening online in 2010 after a local acquaintance from NJ was raving about WFMU on facebook. I didn't take to it immediately, but tried again on Saturday morning during Bob Brainen's show and it became a habit. When I figured out that FMU was the station where Yo la Tengo did the fundraising gigs that made me even more interested. And then I learned that Irwin was behind the Langley Schools Music Project! so many connections.

WFMU connection... mid/late 90s, I was on a listserv discussion group which had Irwin, Citizen Kafka (and maybe other DJs as well) on board. Listened through the RealAudio stream that made everything sound as if it were filtered through an aquarium pump, on the occasions that the bits would flow fast enough through my dial-up. Mostly of the time: "BUFFERING".

WFMU came into my life in the 90s, but the signal was sufficiently weak that I didn't become addicted until the streaming era.
