A few years ago was supposed to meet a friend for a local modern burlesque show --"research" for a possible erotic lit reading night later. She didn't make it, I went in alone...not many solo guys in there. Stage presence and talent varied, but the entire crowd was enthusiastically supportive, which was fun. I decided it would be great fun to design the theme/props/set pieces for such acts.

Totally makes sense, I knew it took a lot of luck, but the missing components are talent and opportunity. I think that today the talent is not as necessary as it was in the past, due to the technology in pop. It doesn't matter how good a performer is, as long as they fit in with the marketing department's plan and maybe can generate some controversy and interest they are acceptable, in my opinion.

Cecile:

I did not know that.
In the US they were either not taped, or were taped over if you weren't a huge star until the later 60s. Even in Australia, lots of great 70s Countdown performances are lost because they were taped over.

Erasure of shows happened in Germany too.
"Musik aus Studio B." is entirely lost except for the farewell show.

that stinks, but then again a lot of people didn't really care about keeping pop music history.

Guido from Cologne:

Director Mike Leckebush was very self-confident.
He was font of producing all theese psychedelic effects.
He had an idea his productions were valuable.

As I learned from a documentary, all of the Monty Python shows would have been erased by the BBC, if not the Monthies themself had bought them back from the station. Hard to imagine. Post-War throw-away mentality. Pop and comedy is nothing of value.

Relevant only to talk of TV performance modes and archives: saw Manilow in a Carson show performance from '85 the other night. A run-of-the-mill 80's flavor song with Barry lip-synching, standing and strutting/posing with the mike, no piano, and a good portion of the audience going bah-NANAS at the mention of his name, at his introduction, at his performance. All sorta odd. Have a look if you like. Check the jacket and paaaants!

It#s not music performance alone.
There are documentary sections as well.
Quite some time-capsules.
Too bad, the playback-period was in the most intersting tim 1967-69.
Even though ... i learne Small Faces were pretty much untight in their "Nutgone"-period due lack of touring and drugs. So who knows.

When I saw that,I did NOT remember that screaming fans were part of the Barry experience....and even into the mid 80s?

There are some A+ archival pieces. Watched a late 50s Steve Allen excerpt recently...him and a young Steve & Eydie and Dinah Shore and Ann Sothern and a quickie Frank cameo, all doing the Allen-written This Could Be The Start of Something Big while on a LONG-ass singing march around backstage halls and studio spaces at NBC. I am GLAD and grateful such a clip wasn't lost. And wondered if it was live when it aired.
