Sem Chumbo:

OK: J.M.K.E. = (Estonian) acronym for *Jalaga Munadesse Kogu Energiaga* (Thanks, G**gle, Estonian version.) And the English is: *Foot to the Eggs to Whole Energy*. Showing us once again that understanding other languages idiomatically is a consistently puzzling trip down WTF Highway..

Did a little language study before three weeks in Budapest. So as you likely know, @ngh, it's 2 closest pals are Finnish and Estonian. Understood nothing at all the entire time. Liberating, in a way.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
David D:

Sem: Just kidding on that one of course!
Avatar 5:08pm
northguineahills:

@Sem Chumbo: It could be worse, it could be Basque. At least Hungarian and Finnish are VERY distantly related to each other, and tentatively related to the distant northern Uralic indigenous peoples. Basque, has no know linguistic relations.
Avatar 5:09pm
northguineahills:

no known..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
David D:

Yes, there have been all sorts of spurious and hopeful theories about Basque, but none ever added up to much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
Sem Chumbo:

Yes, the origins of Basques is a puzzle to me, and it seems nobody w/ serious language origin chops will even hazard a guess. Gotta love that.
Avatar 5:13pm
northguineahills:

Well, I picked the wrong day to leave my umbrella in my car (thunderstorm outside).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
David D:

Everyone is so used to Indo-European languages being linked to each other that it seems odd for a language to be alone. But it makes sense that some languages will remain isolated in an area taken over by another group of languages.
Avatar 5:15pm
northguineahills:

(first world problems, I have maybe 3.5m dash to my car from my office).
  5:15pm

Hey Sem. Your penchant for berets and the extent you go to procure the authentic beret is well known. Here the old fellas just wear them any old way until the things fall apart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
David D:

You want Basque? You get Basque...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Sem Chumbo:

Likewise, Stanley. I only took up finding a replacement beret when a jumble sale beauty went to pieces on me after 26 years of pretty well daily service. So much to learn about felted wool, eh?

He became a "baal te'shuva", that is sort of (not exactly) born again, grew a long beard, went mystical.

Jim Hall on guitar on the Chico Hamilton track.

It would be interesting to know how his music fit into that and vice-versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
doctorjazz:

He was playing a very spiritual, mystical, Coltrane influenced version of Klezmer on clarinet at one point, grew out of his religious journey, or so I've read.

And, really intense, late Trane kind of sound.

{Kim played something from On The Corner yesterday, nice to hear more!

Gotta dig deeper into that...

The choir in Studio 2 here is now getting really loud.

Statman would be a living national treasure if he were Japanese!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm

Do you think that would help?

Great set!

I have some of his stuff, definitely the earlier stuff (but on vinyl), some cd's as well (but, can I find them is another question...). I'll look around for you David.

That would be great!

How was your pint?

I got a job offer to do GIS for Facebook in NYC. It would pay 3x what I make now, but it would be like working for Evil Corp. in Mr. Robot. I love my current job, my dream job, but my wife wants me to take the FB job for two obvious reasons (pay and being back in NYC). I'm saying, no".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm

Wow, that is a dilemma.

There are some good microbreweries here in north-central FL, they've upped their game!

Tough call (actually doesn't sound like it's tough to you at all, NGH, sounds like you're in a good place, home relations can complicate stuff though) Good luck!

Thanks doctorjazz, I'm done w/ the corporate world. I have the freedom to create my own department from the ground up. The VP drove up 3 hours from the home office to see me (everyone else was on vacation) to ask me about GIS, and my visions of the future of creating a database and geoserver. All of my spending requests were granted. Like everyone else in my company, she was chill as fuck, so, I wasn't nervous through the 5 hour interaction. There's no way I'd trade agency for cash, I love what I'm doing now and what I'll be creating in the future. Fuck FB and their 6 digit salary (says the guy who recently went totally broke)

Omer Avital is a favorite of mine!

Who knows, NGH, if things pan out, may wind up doing as well as the FB gig. The stress differential could be worth it even if not.

(I literally had to borrow money from a friend for cab fare to get to LaGuardia to get to FL) Where were these offers (2nd in two weeks) when I needed them).

Omer Avital, new to me, don't know the background. Digdug.

This is a great album, seen Avital live a few times. Seems to be a descendant of Mingus musically.

Being able to set your own schedule, is worth $$$ unto itself. I've been asked to help curate an open-minded concert series that has international artists coming through this little burg, so, I think I'm staying put (plus, I need to record w/ my band!)

@ngh I'm more or less in the same boat, except Facebook isn't asking.

@doctorjazz, you're straight up correct about the stress.
