November 21, 2017: JONATHAN HERTZBERG Is Back! (Source Music)
Soundtrack fanatic Jonathan Hertzberg returns to Morricone Island to spin a selection of his favorite "source music" cues written for film. Diagetic or source music refers to music that is a part of the fictional narrative actually heard by the actors in the scene, as opposed to the underscore which is only heard by the viewer and understood to highlight the fictional reality. It could be emanating from a car stereo as in the opening shot of "Touch of Evil" or over a PA in a restaurant or discotheque, as in "Saturday Night Fever." Some can even take the form of an on-camera performance by the actors (e.g., "The Cantina Song" in "Star Wars") but regardless the audio for the source music is almost always mixed in later at the dubbing session. Most often these source pieces are previously recorded songs which were not written or performed with the movie in mind. However, Jonathan will be focusing on the occasional song that was recorded specifically for the project. His exhaustive knowledge of John Lindsay/Ed Koch-era NYC as portrayed in film can be enjoyed through his "Dirty Old New York aka Fun City" video series. Check out his past Morricone Island-curated shows of music from films featuring NYC preserved in all of its glory, teen-oriented coming of age flicks and films of 1981 (the last year of the 70's).
