Hiya Pittsburg. Wait, looks like I can't spell Pittsburg. Are there two g's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Let's try it with an "e." Pittsberg. No, that doesn't look right, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Big thanks to the mighty Kevin Nutt of Sinner's Crossroads for sharing these songs with me!

Howdy, Leonardo! Yes, Pittsburghg has two g's.

Did the Rev Pittman sermon keep on going? I was starting to groove to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
That was all of Part 1 of that Rev. Pittman record. Part 2 continues on the other side (which I don't have).
Avatar 12:36pm ndbob:

this was one of those records I foolishly passed over many years ago -cheap - maybe $5 - on a 78

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

Well, hell, a track Kevin can't trace the pedigree of, now that's a rarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Doug Schulkind:

@Webham H
So terribly not uncommon for the same melody to be re-appropriated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Doug Schulkind:

When I started doing my show on WFMU in 1987, I wouldn't have been caught dead playing "country" records. My old biases have been demolished so satisfyingly over the years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Rich in Washington:

I grew up in a town where you almost couldn't escape being subjected to country music throughout the late 60s/early 70s. I went through a period in the mid-80s where I loved the darker, older country songs. I now find that I love 50s/60s, some 70s country music, to my wife's eternal annoyance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Doug Schulkind:

My rigid tastes as a young man had me avoiding much music by white folks. But the truth is, some of my best friends are white.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Can this possibly be the same K.C. Carrington: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com... ??!!
Avatar 🥁 12:58pm duke:

When I was a kid, I would moan and groan when my dad played country music in the car. Now I love this stuff. My old man would be proud. However, lots of contemporary country sounds like warmed over R&R to my ears.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm listener james from westwood:

The amazing Laura Cantrell broke my crust on that genre.
Avatar 12:58pm northguineahills:

Johny Paycheck!
Avatar 12:59pm burke:

If I had a country show, I think I would call it "Country Fixins."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Webhamster Henry:

To do country the WFMU way, though, you need to find covers in Czech, Urdu and Tagalog.
Avatar 1:00pm burke:

I have a friend who often uses the idiom "Bigger than Dallas" to describe something that's obvious e.g. "It was right in front of her, bigger 'n Dallas!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Doug Schulkind:

@Webham H
I used to say, I don't play country music, I play countries music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Yippee-tiyo, burke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, Doug! That's so true! I think I've even said something like that when recommending this stream: it's ALL country music, just from all over the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Rich in Washington:

I always loved how Eugene Chadbourne put out a record called Country Music of Southeast Asia, or something like that.
  1:05pm Dean:

Corollary is that all music is World Music. Georg Philipp Telemann? He was once part of the world, wasn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David D:

I'm sitting one block away from Telemannstraße and am part of the world - I think.
  1:09pm Dean:

I'd love to have an address on Telemannstraße.
  1:11pm Dean:

Not to be confused with the original hatin' music you play now and then, "I Hate Hate."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's the lineup:

THE HAITIAN ORCHESTRA
Kenneth Roane (tpt), Sidney Bechet (sop-1/clt-2), Willie 'the Lion' Smith (pno), Olin Aderhold (bs), Leo

Mingus' blathery blustery bullshit throughout Beneath the Underdog is a thing to behold!
Avatar 1:31pm geezerette:

Avatar 1:33pm geezerette:

@Doug, right? It's one long rant! Love the descriptions of LA.
Ethel Waters' autobio also scathing.

Avatar 1:36pm northguineahills:

I grew up on a quiet suburban street, Cage Rd., @geezerette. Later my family moved to a more cacophonous neighborhood on Led Zeppelin Way.
Avatar 1:38pm geezerette:

Hi, NGH!

Dean, ha ha! :D No wonder you're a musician.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

Montego Joe is the WWally Pipp of WFMU
  1:39pm Dean:

@geezerette: I read a book long ago primarily for its connection to LA, The Price of Experience, by Randall Sullivan, about the murders connected to the Billionaire Boys Club.

Not really a musician, geezerette, though I'm a virtuoso with the remote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Can I be the Eddie Murray of WFMU? Please?!?!
Avatar 1:43pm geezerette:

@Dean, you're not a practicing musician, but once an artist always an artist, or so I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's the lineup on this Don Ellis ditty:

Don Ellis (t), Jaki Byard - (p, as), Ron Carter (b), Charlie Persip (d, tymp)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Doug Schulkind:

There's that "tymp" listed in the credits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Jeff Golick:

(I always think of Wally Pipp whenever someone fills in for me.)
  1:55pm Dean:

Running to a meeting, dammit.

Tomorrow I'll have the pleasure of hearing Satoko Fujii and her husband perform at Phil Gelb's flat in Oakland. Phil will prepare a vegan dinner for attendees. Gonna be amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Doug Schulkind:

Have a great meeting and dinner, Dean!
  1:57pm Dean:

Thanks. Bye, all.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Jeff Golick:

Is "cover the chickens" a metaphor.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm JtotheK:

hi doug, hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Doug Schulkind:

It's definitely not a simile.

Whoa, JtotheK just showed up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm David D:

Hi Brian, same here, no chickens, not even metachickens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm David D:

That was a metametachicken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Doug Schulkind:

  2:31pm Dean:

I never metachicken I didn't like.

Meeting's over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I bet there was no meeting. Dean just dashed out for a tongue burrito. Tell the truth, Sir!
  2:35pm Dean:

We're on a roll (figuratively speaking) this week with succinct meetings. Never had a tongue burrito, but I have had un taco de seso, i.e., brains. That's why I'm so spicy smart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Doug Schulkind:

The problem with eating tongue is, how do you know when you're finished?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Brian in UK:

Lord protect us from readers of whatever stripe. "Cover UP the chickens" should suffice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

I'm biting my tongue.
  2:38pm Dean:

So it's "Up *with* People," but "Up *the* chickens"!
  2:40pm Dean:

Answering @Doug's query @2:35, when you're rendered speechless.
Avatar 2:42pm geezerette:

! {:c[ guys, guys, enough with the tongues 'n chickens.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Brian in UK:

The chickens are within my responsibility; Up With People by Lambchop would do.

Aaron. The perfect wedding singer, no insult' he could sing any song you threw.

There's no hope with grope.
Avatar 2:46pm geezerette:

Mopey Grope!, great band.
Avatar 2:46pm ndbob:

great song here Doug!
  2:47pm Dean:

The Neville tune reminds me that my son's middle school is recognizing Transgender Awareness Week next week. In the message to parents, this line: "Here are some terms gender-expansive teens use to identify themselves: agender, boi, both genders, gender fluid, genderqueer, neither, neutral, non-binary, questioning, two spirit, and...human!" Taught me something.
Avatar 2:48pm ndbob:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:52pm doctorjazz:

My daughter ran through the gender terms being used now; have to say I couldn't understand what some of them represented.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
So many great ones on Amy to be sure.
Avatar 2:54pm geezerette:

If it's possible to have a favorite show, which it isn't, this is mine!
  2:54pm Dean:

I can come up with a few terms not on the list that should be: depends, what's it to you?...
Avatar 2:55pm Monica:
