Cabbage Night is apparently more prevalent in Paramus. It stems from an old Scottish tradition on Halloween Eve when girls would closely examine cabbages pulled out of their neighbor's patches to divine the qualities of their future husbands. Once the cabbage had served its purpose, the only logical thing to do with it was throw it against the door and run really fast, thus beginning a long tradition of Halloween pranks. Goosey Night is popular in western Bergen County and Passaic County, but the origins of the term are murkier. We were watching tv at her house one evening and I heard someone walking around upstairs and assumed it was her brother, who worked nights. Later she brought up the ghost again, and asked, "Did you hear someone walking around upstairs earlier?". I said, "Yeah, wasn't that your brother?". She said, "No, he isn't home.". I told her to prove it, and we toured the house to see no one else was there besides us.
