Tom Petty. Hard to believe. I never though it would be this soon.

Yeah, a real gut punch

Hello friends

Hi Jenny!

I told this tale on WFMU already, but my undergrad gf lived in the dorm where the song is based on jumped. It was spooky smoking cigarettes sitting on the window on the outside (the window was flush w/ the floor), and of course I had to play the song (I quit smoking when I was 22).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Funky16Corners:

Which song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Jeff Ash:

I always liked "I Need To Know," too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

Hey Jeff!

American Girl.

Why yes, I moved back to the town that produced Bo Diddley and Tom Petty (thanks to a friend of a friend doing a startup environmental science firm).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Funky16Corners:

I never made the connection that it was about a suicide. Makes sense. I need to pay closer attention to the lyrics and stop playing air guitar so vigorously.
Avatar 10:16pm

There's a million stories about Tom Petty here in Gainesville (feels weird, I've only been here less then two months).
Avatar 10:18pm

this is great

I've been to most mainland US states but never to Florida. I think I'm afraid I'll run into too many people from NJ

Get ready for the breakdown, one of the most sublime moments in all of rock music
Avatar 10:19pm
northguineahills:

relevant lyrics:

"It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin' in the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it's so painful
Something that's so close
And still so far out of reach "

US 441 (13th St) is one of the two main roads at the University Florida campus.

Anyone else hear "Pink Cadillac" in this one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm

Yup
Avatar 10:23pm
northguineahills:

There are about an equal amount of people from the northeast in FL as rednecks, and they are usually the Jerseyites or Longylanders you hoped would leave your neighborhood. Thankfully, Gainesville doesn't have either problem, but, every other city seems to.

gonna jump, coming back!

Thanks for a proper Tom Petty tribute, I'll revisit the archive in the future.

I forgot about the Pack up the Plantation LP. His covers are great. Feel a whole lot better!

Beautifully stated, Larry.

Introduced to this one by Los Lobos in the mid-'80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Me too! I was given a CD of Mardi Gras faves by a friend many years ago and this was on it. I had no idea it was a cover. Rushed out and found a copy for 10 bucks. It goes fro about ten times that these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Jeff Ash:

This set so far is all stuff I listened to at that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

I had this set planned before TP passed, it's certainly right up his alley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Jeff Ash:

I have a Rhino comp of "Louie, Louie" covers from 1983, and that Richard Berry cut is on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

Songs that J Geils taught me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Jeff Ash:

Oh, man. There are so many I came to know through J. Geils. I was so clueless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

Me too. That first album especially
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

It helps that they had an inveterate record collector in the band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
coelacanth∅:

greetings - been diggin' it
  10:50pm
Bluesman:

Dig the version on Full House - the LP that never lets up! the band sounds like a bluesier/RnB detroit act....guess they were soaking in the MI vibes on that show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Johnny - you mean Geils version of Homework?
  10:51pm
Bluesman:

Larry I'm trying to work and you now have me completely distracted with all this tune-age.
  10:51pm
Bluesman:

Yes J Geils. From the Live LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I think that's how it's supposed to work. I'm a BAD INFLUENCE!
  10:53pm
Bluesman:

Imagine if the lame-o's from the show "Full House" attempted Homework or hard Drivin' man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
coelacanth∅:

never heard a "homework" i didn't like. favorites are fleetwood mac's (live) and Otis'. Giels' is up there, and yeh they got the best "hard drivin' man", in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

Geils could certainly tear shit up
  11:00pm
Bluesman:

Fun fact: Saw the Dictators one time at the Palladium (with Mark The Animal Mendoza on bass). For the encore they whipped out a (not too) surprisingly energetic version of "Lookin' for a Love - which was obviously inspired by J. Geils' version on Full House. I think everybody's "homework" for tomorrow is to listen to that album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

and Bluesman speaks truth -that live album doesn't let up!

(still like bloodshot the best though)
  11:01pm
Bluesman:

Coelacanth0 I will have to revisit Bloodshot. Its been awhile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth∅:

haha i just listened to it a month or 2 ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

Aren't there three or four Geils Live LPs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth∅:

well, full house was my very exciting (at a very young age) intro to J.Giels Band; but bloodshot swept me off my feet! (strangely have NOT listened to that one in a few years though, except a few tracks i put on a mixtape)
  11:07pm
Bluesman:

Larry, there is "Showtime" which had their MTV "Hit" of I Do as well as the Centerfold era stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Funky16Corners:

Another song (I Do) that I heard first by J Geils
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
coelacanth∅:

my records are not playable, since i moved to an apartment with apparently rubber floors. spotify had full house at the time of Giels' departure; they didn't have bloodshot.
...damn i miss playing records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

liking this other Otis. i haven't explored Shuggie much, for some reason...or beyond reason?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Funky16Corners:

Hi/Bye Geezerette!

Bluesman:

Larry I think the J. Geils discussion may be the roots of your future Testify: Songs J. Geil taught us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Funky16Corners:

I could do a show like that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Jeff Ash:

J. Geils had 3 live LPs. Full House, Blow Your Face Out and Showtime. First two are worthwhile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Funky16Corners:

I knew you'd know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
coelacanth∅:

i think every blues/rnb cover on full house i learned of there first, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

It was their first album for me. Albert Collins. Contours. John Lee Hooker, etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth∅:

- and "hold your lovin'" from bloodshot...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth∅:

i didn't hear that first album 'till years later - probably into my 20s, when i found it for a buck in a used book store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Funky16Corners:

I first heard it on another one of those two-fer cassettes, with the first LP on one side and Monkey Island on the other (I think)
  11:31pm
Bluesman:

Reminding me of the Rutles' tea-drinking eastern-influenced tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Tea...right...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Funky16Corners:

This is cool, and English jazz group playing with an Indian ensemble
  11:35pm
Bluesman:

"I've taken tea, lots of tea, and biscuits.."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Funky16Corners:

Stunned...and shocked...shocked and stunned.
  11:36pm
Bluesman:

This John Harriott track is fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Funky16Corners:

There was a CD reissue of both of the albums this group did. I have an OG of the first album on vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Funky16Corners:

It's all really good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
coelacanth∅:

what was it about the rutles that you found so appealing?

Sorry I missed the Tom tribute! Late entry!
