Everybody! Thanks being here without the grace of my usual lead-in to sweeten the air
Avatar 📉 10:01pm

usually i just fall asleep before CBF when there's no Flash Strap lead in, but tonight i just cranked up the Dead C and i made it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Little Danny:

Dead C is good honest wake-up music. Thanks for being here, Hyde!

Coel my ancient fish friend. Right on time.

Hi chums!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
coelacanth∅:

my internal clock i guess.
...the truth is that i'm usually listening right from the beginning but use (consciously or otherwise) the changing of the guard as a signal to do a few things, before settling in again; so my checking in is delayed

hola coel and melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

Melllllinda! Welcome, friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

I'm into your FMU-dictated schedule, coel

hyde:

aw man, i forgot to use the diacritics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Little Danny:

@hyde: you're förgiven. Diacritics, they only slow us english-keyboarders down, man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
coelacanth∅:

hyde i thought it wasn't necessary in spanish (hola) ...i said hi in portuguese. i was going to say "bonjour" but didn't know about the "and"!
  10:16pm
MrFab:

'Sup y'all!
Lil Danny, what is Kris Holmes doing? Twice recently I've tuned in to his show and his show was a no-show. Doug's gonna make him go stand in the corner if he continues with this behaviour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Little Danny:

@MrFab: he's had his hands busy with his recent move to San Antonio and outta west Texas, a transition I will never forgive him for.

Also, hello sir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
coelacanth∅:

LD @10.16 i'm on a laptop that has easy access to those marks. if i were on my other i would've forgone the whole multilingual idea!
Avatar 📉 10:19pm
hyde:

my high school spanish and college portuguese has only qualified me to throw around the term diacritics, well, willy-nilly ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
coelacanth∅:

hahaha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
melinda:

I always forget where the diacritics are on my keyboard.
Avatar 10:22pm

There's you are, LD!

Oddly enough I heard Phil Ochs on the Burnsey Vietnam doc, I don't think I've heard in a doc before...
Avatar 📉 10:23pm

@melinda at work i sometimes need to use the umlaut, so i know the keyboard combo for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
coelacanth∅:

i got kicked out of spanish class. i couldn't grasp it and didn't want to get help after class. i took a spanish course as an adult and grasped the rules but never learned that many words. (& never ended up going to peru as i had planned)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Little Danny:

Which Ochs's track, NGH? Also, would you recommend said doc? Also, welcome!
Avatar 10:26pm

The obvious one, "I ain't marching anymore".

Doug Schulkind:

Little Danny, Sir, you are tearing the roof off the sucker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda if it happens to be an ancient macbook, you'd hold "alt/option" then a vowel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
melinda:

I had several years of Spanish in grade and high school but never became fluent. I remember a lot of words but I was bad at practicing speaking or seeking opportunities to immerse myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
melinda:

But you have to remember the vowel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
melinda:

Actually I have a new Kanex keyboard I haven't done diacritics with yet. But since I don't remember the macbook settings there's nothing to re-learn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
coelacanth∅:

at one time i lived with my sister (still) and was going out with someone who both were majoring in french. i picked up some phrases but never learned the rules. i really like french (unless it's spoken by a snob!) and regret not making a point of learning that from them.
Avatar 10:35pm
northguineahills:

It's good as it shows the evil and duplicity of American foreign policy then and before, and it goes back and spends 90 minutes on the French colonization/war/American involvement up to 1954. It pulls off scabs, much more incisive then I'd expect for Ken Burns, it shows a lot of pain and bullshittery on both sides, mainly the US. As a student of history, there are a few tidbits I've learned. It's a LONG history doc, but it shows the U.S. warts an all. (more warts then expected)
Avatar 10:37pm
northguineahills:

When I met my wife, most of the Spanish I knew was from watching futbol en espanol. Unfortunately,, her and her friends speak perfect English, so, my spoken Spanish is still stunted. Now, that I've moved to FL, understanding spoken Spanish has suffered (and I used to be able to watch Spanish movies w/o subtitles).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth∅:

that whole set was Stellar, Danny

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

Thanks Coel! I'm pleased but embarrassed by these kind words
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Little Danny:

Yeah, definitely, NGH. This track in particular, which features Harry Dean's own endearing vocal
  10:43pm
MrFab:

Harry Dean Stanton released a really nice album a few years back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
coelacanth∅:

it can work the other way round too, ngh...my sister (whose house i stayed at 2-3 days/week) had a nanny/housecleaner from brasil who really wanted to improve her english, and i decided it was more important for her to get the english down, in the us, than for me to learn portuguese, in the us. i only learned a few things - though i developed quite a fondness for the language.

Thanks hyde, see ya around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Little Danny:

@MrFab: I'm now curious. Also, how would you describe his album?
Avatar 10:52pm
northguineahills:

@coel: In Mexico, her friends and relatives preferred to speak English w/ me. Unfortunately, her parents didn't speak a lick of English, so, the first time I was stuck w/ them for a few days, was awkward, until my spanish finally kicked in. I'm exceptionally good at cursing in Mexican Spanish!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
melinda:

Thanks for Cancion Mixteca. I never get tired of hearing it.
  10:53pm
MrFab:

Harry Dean's album? Like you're sitting in his living room and he's talking to you and playing some of his fave old Country/folk songs for you on his acoustic. Really - they left in his between-song comments
Avatar 10:54pm
northguineahills:

I thought I heard Jerry, and I'm unaware of New Riders of the Purple Sage. I'll go back to WFMU corner, where I belong, for not knowing that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
melinda:

The last time I checked the Harry Dean Stanton doc wasn't available on Netflix but maybe it is now, must look into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

Thanks for the info MrFab. That sounds great, actually!
Avatar 10:55pm

What everyone said about Harry Dean Stanton, the interludes are amazing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
melinda:

Green Rocky Road is one of my favorite folk songs. Loving this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Little Danny:

They're great, NGH! First two albums fit nicely in with American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. And your ears are acute - that was indeed Jerry - lots of overlap with the two groups
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Little Danny:

Me too, Melinda - and this must be my fave version of 'em all. Love Fred Neil so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
melinda:

Me too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Little Danny:

@melinda: do you have any fave versions of "Green Rocky Road" I should look into?
Avatar 11:02pm
northguineahills:

I love Workingman's Dead (I have it on vinyl).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
melinda:

Hard to choose, but I like Peter Paul & Mary's version (is that lame?) and Dave Van Ronk's. Terry Callier does a nice one too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Little Danny:

@NGH and @MrFab: Harry Dean also had one of the most beautiful and expressive voices in film

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm

i had to scroll up when i saw Peter,Paul & Mary. melinda, i've been called lame for liking PPM; i don't care! that shit is in me. to the bone.
Avatar 11:29pm
northguineahills:

I dig quite a bit of PPM, coel.... (for some reason).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

- and about that Harry Dean Stanton album - i now know i need to hear that! (Thanks MrFab) that description reminds me of a bit of a Bill Broonzy recording Kurt Gottchalk played this morning.
Special stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
coelacanth∅:

ngh, PPM's first and 3rd ("in the wind") were maybe my first step away from the 2-3 children's records in the house (which always bored the fuck out of me!) -when i was 3-4. i cannot be objective, truly, but i can definitely identify what i like about it. i'll never know how i would've felt about it had it not been what my family sat around the living room and sang along with at such a young age.
Avatar 11:54pm
northguineahills:

I never heard PPM until the late 90s, found a few thrift store records. But it hit me at the right time.
