Die Orgel wurde 2003 bis 2004 von dem Freiburger Orgelbauer Hartwig Späth erbaut. Das Instrument hat 41 Register (2745 Pfeifen) auf drei Manualen und Pedal. Die Disposition orientiert sich an französisch romantischen Orgeln im Stile von Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, insbesondere an dem Instrument der Orgel von 1880 in St. François-de-Sales in Lyon. Die Spieltrakturen sind mechanisch, der Spieltisch ist einem Cavaillé-Coll-Spieltisch nachempfunden.

Das Orgelgehäuse, das sich mit einer Höhe von über 12 Metern über zwei Emporen erstreckt, ist ebenfalls neu erbaut worden, wobei in weiten Teilen Elemente des historischen Gehäuses verwandt wurden.

The organ was built between 2003 and 2004 by the Freiburg organ builder Hartwig Späth . The instrument has 41 registers (2745 whistles) on three manuals and pedal . The disposition is oriented to French romantic organs in the style of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll , in particular the instrument of the organ of 1880 in St. François de Sales in Lyon. The game moves are mechanical, the playing table is modeled on a Cavaillé-Coll table.

The organ enclosure , which extends over 12 meters above two galleries, has also been newly built, with elements of the historical enclosure being used in large parts.

Composer Franz Schubert conducted his Mass in F major there, and Anton Bruckner's Mass in F minor was written for the church and was first performed there. In the 21st century, the church is known to host high quality sacred music concerts, particularly for its weekly Sunday High mass with full orchestra and choir.

I find that it is quite rare when pipe organ music provides for a satisfying at home listening experience, even though I love the sound of the instrument and the concerts I've attended of both modern and classical music. On a conventional stereo recording, so much often ends up being lost when the instrument's is removed from the typically richly resonant space in which it was originally constructed. Thankfully, this recording seems to be one of the exceptions, one in which the inherent "flatness" of a recording seems to actually work to the music's advantage. Another modern organ recording I've recently found engaging is Jean-Luc Guionnet's "De Proche En Proche"

Thanks for playing the entirety of that Nitsch recording. The "fluttering" sounds he got going during the 4th side were true things of beauty. My mind says that they were of course products of low frequency oscillation, but my ears and heart experienced a wonderful journey in the way he built towards them, let them loose, and pulled them back in during the final section of the piece.
