Ghosts can only say "moshi" once, so you say moshi-moshi on the phone to prove you're not a ghost. Maybe that's also why one would have Pamyu Pamyu bonbon close to a moshimoshi in one's musical ID/listing.
Avatar 7:19pm
steve:

i love the jpop stuff. there's an i assume newish thing which ive fallen into on Soundcloud of what appear to be chopped up insane remixes of jpop or kpop, though i have yet to figure out what its called or if its more than just random bedroom producers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Gary:

Super b/p! ... Steve, OMG, I need a link or two
Avatar 7:25pm

tonight i'm reading about the Japanese overrunning the Brits in Malaysia and Singapore in the early forties which again seems sort of appropriate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm

You know, Hyde, that was directly responsible for India's greatest movie dancer, Helen
Avatar 7:29pm
steve:

Gary ill email you some links... id be curious if you have any ideas... what i think it is is lately there's a lot of bedroom type laptop producers doing crazy breakcore ish remixes of jpop and just a few of them are really awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Gary:

Sounds about right, but would super love to take a listen
Avatar 7:30pm

@Gary yep. i left out Burma, but that figures prominently in this book too. i never really knew Aung San Suu Kyi"s father was a big player back then.

Great show, Gary! As per usual. Thanks!
Avatar 7:55pm
geezerette:

The noir-ishness of "Pussycat" reminded me of "The Face of Another", which is an absolutely terrifying Japanese horror film from the sixties. It's got a beatnik cafe sort of scene in it. Strongly recommend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Gary:

Super Marie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
Gary:

@Geezerette, I don't know "The Face of Another" ... gotta track it down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm

Speaking of movies, remember the Japanese boy in Mystery Train? If he had spent all of his free time on the set hanging out with Screamin' Jay Hawkins, he might have ended up sounding like Chitts.

@geezerette yes! Teshigahara Hiroshi. also love Woman in the Dunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm

Ha, yes, I do remember -- saw that long ago, but only once
Avatar 8:05pm
geezerette:

Hyde, yes! Also scary as hell! Post war, 'nuff said.

Gary, it couldn't be more Japanese, and I think it's b & w.
Criterion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
Parq:

Hah. Mystery Train is Criterion too. I just bought it at a Criterion sale for half off, $20. By contrast, when Stranger Than Paradise first came out on VHS, it was $90.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
Gary:

Whaaa ...? Seriously? Ninety bucks for a VHS tape?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Parq:

Gary, when the medium was new and rental stores were a big thing, the studios charged big bucks for a new releases on the theory that every video store would have to buy one.

basically, some jerkhole has been stumping for Brast Burn for weeks?

there's a badass (but delicious) gang of steelhead trout that might not take kindly to being called tilapia!

gravlax?
...steelhead and salmon are my 2 favorites to eat at home; when i have sushi, it's yellowtail and white tuna.
(i clearly like the fatty ones)

Gary, it's cured...hmm, maybe you try this, in salt, sugar and gin or vodka.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Gary:

I am embarrassed to admit I need to look up Morita Doji ... but will do
Avatar 9:31pm
hyde:

i haven't made gravlax for years, but mostly i think you just combine salt, sugar, junper and gin with salmon and let it sit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Gary:

Mmm, now I'm hungry for gravlax
Avatar 9:33pm
hyde:

@Gary haha even more embarrassing might be that i once sent you three Morita Doji records. but maybe you didn't like them! in which case, ignore ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Gary:

Shoot, how did you send them? It is unlikely I didn't like them; more likely is constant overwhelm and never got the chance to listen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Gary:

NEVER MIND I JUST FOUND THEM ... super psyched to listen (finally)! And to thank you for sending
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Gary:

If you think that's bad, though; one of my best friends once gave me a CD he burned of his favorite Cambodian rock back in 2000, and it took me FIVE OR SIX YEARS to listen to it. It was the first Cambodian rock outside of the Sublime Frequencies releases I'd heard and it blew me away (duh)
Avatar 9:40pm
hyde:

heh, cool! i think the first two are great records. they're really dour--as i understand it, Morita Doji only started singing after a friend of hers committed suicide. And then she put out a few records and then said she would never perform again, and hasn't
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Gary:

Damn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
coelacanth∅:

...i'm so behind on hearing these shows in their entirety that i don't know what you've played and haven't. maybe this weekend i can blast them when i get home.
...and maybe i'll learn how to make gravlax!
Avatar 9:44pm
hyde:

make japanese gravlax
Avatar 9:47pm
hyde:

the highest compliment that i can pay that Brast Burn record is that it's basically unclassifiable
