Hey all! I just copyedited a college textbook on the history of Western music that reproduced this score in full. Fits neatly on a page!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:57pm
weinstein:

Cool. I thought it would be interesting to see it while listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm
fred:

Good afternoon David, Ruth, and listeners. Another favorite show seems to be coming
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
listener james from westwood:

The book actually comes with either a CD or a web link to samples or whole pieces, including this one, so the students will get that same benefit!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
weinstein:

Hey Fred! Enjoy!
Avatar 3:05pm

Hello,David and Ruth,and all!
So excited, love Terry Riley!

Hi Ridgewood folks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:10pm
weinstein:

Glad to have you all in for this one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
fred:

Hi geezerette! I just got the latest Juliana Hatfield record, and she seems to share your appreciation for the orange one, based on some track titles: "when you're a star", "Kellyanne", or "short-fingered man". I haven't listened to it yet, but I doubt the last one is flattering
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
doctorjazz:

Love this In C (Mantra)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
fred:

I thought I should cut to the chase and favorite the whole show already
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
weinstein:

Some things are prettiest unpolished. And that naughty bass player!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
weinstein:

Thanks, Fred. I'm trying to control my unbridled passion for this piece, what it means to me.
Avatar 3:19pm
geezerette:

"Short-fingered Man", that's hilarious,Fred!
I'm actually drawing him now. Choosing ridicule over anger. Can't wait to hear that album.
Avatar 3:20pm
geezerette:

Absolutely LOVE this!
Avatar 3:21pm
geezerette:

and it's making me laugh.

love this version. Besides Boudreau the other well-known member of this ensemble is Raôul Duguay. Here's his "big hit" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuOScxcmqNo
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
weinstein:

Thanks, Quebec. I've long wondered what this scene was really like. They could be either liberated academics or dedicated stoners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
fred:

@geezerette: she put the lyrics on her bandcamp, I don't think he'd like them much: julianahatfield.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
doctorjazz:

Love the electronic, hazy sound they get (acoustically, I presume?)
  3:28pm
from Quebec:

yes, or both!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
weinstein:

It's recorded more like a rock band than a classical ensemble.
Avatar 3:30pm
geezerette:

Fred, she nailed him! He's especially repulsive to women.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
fred:

What I love about In C is that it can be played by any kind of ensemble, and even though I know it's In C quickly, I still don't know how it will unfold. A different kind of balance between improvisation and written down music
Avatar 3:32pm
geezerette:

David, exactly! The spirit of the times is absolutely encoded in it. Very Sargeant Pepper and that's a complement. Disciplined anarchy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
weinstein:

I love how badly it can be roughed up and still succeed, but also how cool it is when you follow the rules exactly.
Avatar 3:34pm
northguineahills:

Dig this version....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
fred:

Speeking of rock bands, I like Acid Mothers Temple's version. Which isn't saying much, because I liked all the versions I've heard (that's why I don't want to hear the Ensemble Intercontemporain play it. They could fumble this)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm

Terry Riley is another person from whom I'm one degree of separation, owing to my oft-lauded uncle.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm

How cool!
Avatar 3:47pm

Craig was so proud of that! And he was just a kid then. He really loved Jazz, and he was probably a genius but he was just a guy.

UM, seriously, I'm stunned! So happy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Uncle Michael:

I'll have to ask Jim if Craig was part of the carload that, along with Doug's friend, drove up to Toronto for the Massey Hall concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah, David. I actually made it out to OM once before Jim transitioned to Emeritus status.
Avatar 3:55pm
geezerette:

That would be great to know. Never heard that story.

Other Minds,wow.
Avatar 3:59pm
geezerette:

David, so interesting, this is completely different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Uncle Michael:

One of my uncle's Oberlin jazz friends back in '53 or so was a townie, not a student. He was part of a road trip to go see Parker at Massey Hall. 30 years later, Doug put that guy on the air at Oberlin...gave him a show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Uncle Michael:

Riley's in a film Jim made about Pandit Pran Nath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm

This is as lovely an "In C" as I've ever heard.
Avatar 4:04pm

Really,UM, you are insanely lucky to come from a family like that.
Wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm

Yeah, this is gorgeous!

Punneriffic, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm

This one got quite a lot of airplay, but usually not in full. It does ignore some rules, but then again it was on Transgressive Records

Yeah, Fred. I can't keep up with the master, but I dare try on occasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm

I have this one, and of course love it
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:32pm

I saw bang on a can play in C in 2000 at BAM, t'was nice...

Occasionally you see concept versions (I won't say gimmicky) for all keyboards, all voices, all strings. Still works.

Thanks for this David. In a public posting i inadvertently attributed to Kurt, who had announced it. I'm glad he did! Also, when i turned this on my stereo, i already had it playing on my iphone. Since the latter was a touch ahead, there was a surround sound effect that seemed made for the recordings. I recommend it. Anyway, thanks again.
