growing up in a household that was academic and "conversation-oriented" there was access to multiple sources from all aspects of global society. (my father was an ever-growing bigot, too). i turned to music for escape and to learn the trials of those oppressed and those not; the lesson i got?.... no one is immune from troubles. everything is relative.. therefore love all people, not just those in your corner.. ...

Like Annie's, my family was open and respectful. (Also like Annie's, my dad was changed for the worse by time and age, but that's a side point.) Unfortunately, it ended at my front door. The blue collar Catholic New Jersey community in which I grew was openly racist, anti-Semitic and pit-bull Republican. That, plus my current (and for the past 30 years) work environment, is why I'm not suprised by the current crop of racist bullying assholes. Not that I understand them, condone them or forgive them in the least -- it's just that, unlike people I know from more enlightened backgrounds, I'm not at all surprised to find that they exist.

Nixon, folks. He wasn't personally disposed to dislike minorities. In fact, he was a strong proponent of civil rights...until being so was politically infeasible. The hatred promoting racism does not manifest only as individual emotion.

Just found out that there's a confederate statue on an island off the coast of Massachusetts up here. The thing is, they can't actually do anything to it, because the whole grounds are a historically protected area. The solution: they put a nondescript box over it.
Avatar 1:05pm
northguineahills:

Most of the statues came up during the resurgence of the modern KKK in the late 1910s/1920s or during the Civil Rights era.
Avatar 1:06pm

I think it's more of having the statues in a public context. Germany kept many Nazi artifacts but in museums that provide a more specific context.

The problem is not that these sculptures exist. The problem is that they were erected to celebrate the men they are portraying, and many people continue to do so, encouraged by the prescience of the statues. I'm not a big fan of cultural revision, but these aren't mere works of art.

......imagine being blind and NOT seeing the sculptures. the buddha was the first to say he did not want stone homages to himself. i think we put these things up to feed our ego/guilt. remember when the taliban began to destroy all those amazing buddhas?? there was a global uprising, yet it still happens in other forms: our attachment to images that soothe our fears/egos/guilt is just that. i think the question is: how are our hearts and souls satisfied?

In Moscow I found this amazingly beautiful poster of Lenin. It was gorgeous. I turned to my husband and said- wow, this is amazing.... but it would be kinda weird to have a giant poster of Lenin in our house right? @ coel: that story on the delaware county fair is somewhat troublesome in that one of the protesers was banned from the fair.... ... we STILL live in paranoid times. and @meghan: i used to have such an amazing collection of posters and images... more and more visitors to my home questioned my "loyalty". when i was 13-14 i recieved a lovely pin from a visiting russian dignitary to our house, an image of yuri gagarin. i wore it with pride.. i was torn to shreds in Jr HS as being a commie... ... we will never stop hating...

I don't hate communists or Lenin, but my problem w/them is that (IMHO) people like to forget that they oppressed human rights and gave leftists a bad name. I'm for democratic socialism. But only if it stays democratic. People like Lenin, Chavez et al. were really into circular firing squads and ultimately gave in to corrupting totalitarian tendencies, severely damaging the cause for many generations past and yet to come.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a pleasantly liberal bubble-- aging hippie parents, experimental high school not unlike the one in Billy Jack-- but I was still deep enough in the backwoods that there was a lot of that stuff around. One house a mile or two from mine had a Confederate flag outside. After 9/11, they literally hung a "United We Stand" flag UNDERNEATH IT. I really wanted to get a photo, but I was afraid of being shot.

The most intractable aspect of that problem (re Meghan@1:36) is that it's all a result of human nature. Given the way the human mind is wired to work, and given certain unchangable aspects of our current society, this stuborn, irrational opposition to progressive ideals is inevitable. I'm all for trying to eliminate this terrible part of human nature, but I fear we can't do so any more than we can hope to eliminate hurricanes.

Some of this is human nature, have to agree, my group or "tribe" is who I'm with. My dad, who was a holocaust survivor (camps, the works), espoused racist feelings when I was a child. my mother is definitely racist, though not particularly hateful. she's the kind that would say she has a problem with jews or mexicans, "but Murray's different; but Juan is different". she disapproved of interracial romances, but by the time every one of her offspring had had such relationships she softened her view on that.
