am I on the wrong playlist again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm

Wrong playlist, right time!

If I don't hear any more Ground Zero or Otomo Yoshihide in the next month, I'll might be rather cross at you Gary! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Gary:

Uh oh! I'll have to get to work on that, NGH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Gary:

And, again: I invite all arguments for better examples of each attribute!
Avatar 7:14pm
hyde:

super eighties is kind of a hard category to argue. for me the quintessential personal things would be like The Boredoms or The Stalin, but the stuff you're playing sounds in its way a lot more 80's
Avatar 7:15pm
hyde:

also, what is that picture. is it Guitar Wolf as Godzilla
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Gary:

Indeed it is GW as Godzilla
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Gary:

I definitely went for the most cliche / obvious sense of "eighties" music with that choice
Avatar 7:17pm
northguineahills:

Buffalo Daughter sounds a lot like Shongun Kunitoki (who are Finnish, and sound a little more like Terry Riley) (they can be found on Fonal Recs)

I would call Buffalo Daughter "super church of anthrax".
Avatar 7:18pm
northguineahills:

Shogun Kunitoki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Gary:

I'll have to look up Shogun Kunitoki ... and how come church of anthrax? I'm not getting a reference, I suspect
Avatar 7:20pm
hyde:

i love Guitar Wolf. i saw them at some point in the 90's, though where or when i can't really pinpoint.

also, RIP to Haruo Nakajima who died this week, who played Godzilla in the 1954 flick and a few others. He's in Seven Samurai, too.
Avatar 7:23pm
northguineahills:

Church of Anthrax was the rockin' album John Cale did w/ Terry Riley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gary:

I know, that was so sad to see all those pics of him in the costume in remembrance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Gary:

Ah! I should try to find that, thanks, NGH

I thought Tori no Jidai was closer to welcome the birds, but then again my Japanese sucks.

wooooo, Gaseneta ! this is a quintessential 80's band for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm

NGH, I trust your Japanese more than I trust mine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
melinda:

Bodegamite....a tiny pest, or a tasty spread?
Avatar 7:54pm

ooh, i love Flied Egg too. this theme is the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Gary:

@Melinda, I vote for both!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Gary:

"Sh*t, there are bodegamites in my Bodegamite!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm

It's like a response song to Mayakovsky's "Cloud in Trousers"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm
melinda:

Many good song titles.

this is all a great soundtrack for the Asian history book i'm reading

Ike:

Hey!
Avatar 8:36pm
hyde:

@Gary highly recommended (at least ~140 pages in): From the Ruins of Empire by Pankaj Mishra. sort of a history of late 19th/20th century Asia largely from the perspective of Asians with a lot of autobiography about figures like Jamal Al-din Al-Afghani, Liang Qichao and Rabindranath Tagore who aren't all that well known in the west. I admit I had only heard of Tagore...it's really readable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm

@Hyde, that sounds amazing

@Gary check it out, dude!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm

Do any of you like anime? I mostly can't get into it. Too many sexist squeaky caricatures of women and poor plot resolutions. I liked Cowboy Bebop though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Gary:

Ghost in the Shell ... I think I saw the sequel to it? And liked it. I haven't seen that many, myself
Avatar 8:53pm
hyde:

this is like a preview of the much promised noise show, heh heh heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Gary:

Haha, I was sweating bullets wondering if you were gonna remember that promise! I guess I gotta deliver definitely now :)
Avatar 8:54pm

Hyde! Miyazaki is good. Not an anime fan but his "My Friend Totoro" and "Spirited Away" are two of my favorite films.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Gary:

I haven't seen Totoro yet, but loved Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle
Avatar 8:56pm

Damns, missed Melt Banana!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Gary:

But, more importantly, you're in time for Kousokuya
Avatar 8:59pm
hyde:

@ike i would recommend Mamoru Hosada (Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children) and Satoshi Kon (Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Millennium Actress)
Avatar 9:00pm
northguineahills:

damn it hyde, I really don't need to lengthen my reading queue, I already need to eventually become a jiangshi in order to finish what't already there.
Avatar 9:01pm
hyde:

@ngh haha, c'mon. none of us will finish what we want to read or hear before death. embrace it, just keep plugging ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
Gary:

PAPRIKA! I forgot about Paprika. That is one awesome poem-as-movie
Avatar 9:04pm
northguineahills:

When I was a kid there was cute show w/ (to me at least) were hopping jiangshi's w/ cartoonish music on when I got home from school. It's how I started to learn Japanese.
Avatar 9:05pm

Avatar 9:09pm

They used to sell the week's Sesame Street's script at the newsstands for adults so they could watch and learn English.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Gary:

whoa, that's amazing
Avatar 9:10pm
hyde:

totally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm

Oh I love Miyazaki. I don't even think of those movies as anime somehow. They're in a class of their own. Miyazaki movies are just Miyazaki movies.

For those who haven't seen "The Face of Another" I won't describe it, but this live action b&w movie seems like something almost everyone here would dig.
