On a desert island, all one really needs is some bread, water, and those Stompin' comps.

This (radio) day just keeps on giving...

Holy crap, did not know this was originally Prince's!

I thought I heard the voice of Walter Lure. One of the great unsung giants of R&R in my book.

The Oscar:

I can never keep it straight-- was Teenage Head the band in Class of 1984, or the punk rock episode of Quincy?

V interesting article on Marley and the Marley Estate in recent NYer: www.newyorker.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Jeff Golick:

...which makes me want to also share this amazing piece on Bunny Wailer by John Jeremiah Sullivan from a few years back: www.gq.com...
  2:56pm
Nate K.:

@Jeff, I read that piece in this fantastic collection JJS has called Pulphead. There's also a great piece in there about tracking down blues lyrics with John Fahey.
  3:02pm
Dungaroos Kipawah:

Big Al's bday yesterday,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @Nate K., I read PULPHEAD, too. Great book. I remember the Christian rock festival piece well (is that the first one?).
  3:04pm
Nate K.:

Yes, I believe that is first. I also really enjoyed the one about the underground economy created by former cast members of MTV's The Real World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
doctorjazz:

Interesting, an article on chasing down blues lyrics with John Fahey. His whole "shtick" was the blues guitar accompaniment WITHOUT the lyrics...
  3:06pm
JakeGould:

Hey all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Jeff Golick:

The wiki article on PULPHEAD rather helpfully (?) has links to all of the original pieces: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Doug Schulkind:

John Jeremiah Sullivan penned a wonderful piece on the search for Geeshie Wiley (and a lot more than just that): www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
Matt F:

He did a great piece about the evolution of ska music in the oxford american a couple years ago too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
Jeff Golick:

Oooh yeah that was a good one, @Matt.
  3:11pm
Nate K.:

The Geeshie Wiley piece was similar to the one I referred to about Fahey, but taken to another level of exploration and research.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
Jeff Golick:

Ska link: www.oxfordamerican.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm

Imma sit here and read that ska piece right now because I am on vacation.

Oh my this Donny is just supreme.

And now I too am a jealous guy, @Doug.

The Believer has a thorough and informative piece up on the current status of the Sun Ra archives and affairs. With plenty of 411 from WFMU brethren Michael Anderson and Irwin Chusid: logger.believermag.com...

I just up and read it right now because I am on vacation.

One time a guy at the pizza place screamed at me because I called the Italian music he was playing opera. We made up a few seconds later when I bought a Snapple.

Time for the geeky personnel thing:
Bass – Jymie Merritt
Drums – Art Blakey
Piano – Bobby Timmons
Tenor Saxophone – Wayne Shorter
Trumpet – Lee Morgan
  3:43pm
JakeGould:

And FWIW, sorry to hear about the Great Jones Cafe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Matt F:

Thanks man.
  3:47pm
Dungaroos Kipawah:

To expand on this Gulf Coast vibe, maybe one for D.L. Menard, who bought the farm yesterday. You just played the Cajun Rod Stewart (Tommy), how about the "Cajun Hank Willians"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Dominick:

very nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Matt F:

Aw man, hadn't heard about DL Menard! Saw him at the Ponderosa Stomp once, he was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
That there is my fave Messengers lineup of them all.

{I was saddened to read and learn, in a review of the newish Lee Morgan doc, that Blakey sometimes paid his band members, including Morgan, in drugs in order to keep more of the cash for himself.}

D.L. Menard was also a helluva a woodworker/furniture maker. R.I.P. to one of the greats.

Coming up on the Explorers Room with Flash Strap tonight:

A FULL DOSE OF DUB:
It's sweltering, the humidity is like hot fog, the sun a radioactive strobe. The only cure for a heatwave like this is to get your chalice ablaze and have a full dose of dub. Tonight will be wall-to-wall dub stuff, some of my very favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Matt F:

Thanky and Bye Bye!
