That's an interesting thing. Trane came out of Philly, which was deffo a scene - I think as a kind of halfway point between the South & North for many? He was born in NorthCarolina I believe - from a long line of Preachers & such. Was in the Navy in Hawaii I think... But like Hendrix, not an Artist I associate w/ a single specific locale, really - out of my ignorance or otherwise. Hm. NYC for everybody I guess...

Are there artists (in any genre) who changed their overall conception as much as Trane (and I guess Miles) over the course of a career? To the point of alienating earlier fans? I guess Picasso...Dylan...

Maybe that was an era when people got around much more & distinct cities & coasts began to lose their distinct & even opposed natures...
TheBeatles & Lennon embodied restless evolution - but were of course the most popular thing ever also...Trane prefigured PsychedelicRawk pretty directly - a straight line to the bYRdS & then everyone, for instance...the connection to RaviShankar is almost circular amongst those - & then Olatunji - prefigures 'World Music' directly... Anyhow - yes, those are the Artists who represent that, I think. I sometimes compare Lennon & Malcolm X in political/spiritual/public evolution... John Coltrane was distinctly on a Quest, & determined to Manifest what he found in his actual life & work...

Woolf makes me think of James Joyce. Is it a modernism thing?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I've heard Bach was actually considered a tad old-fashioned in his own time - tho' his skill & productivity had to have been respected...maybe his writing for all instruments & ensembles is an example - tho' I'm punching far above my weight now... Beethoven said to be transitional from old-stylee Patronage to Moderne 'pay me I'm a famous Artiste' era - w/ new approaches to Tonality. Ignorant of how much transition is in evidence over his output... Kerouac going from aping TomWolfe to writing one long uninterrupted Road of scrolled paper spontaneously on a speed jag in a comparable era...& really Joyce is before him.

That seems right, @Jeff G., but I am of the mind that we have always been modernist., contra Latour (whose work on the topic I have not read, but why should that stop me from spouting an opinion?).

You can hear in Bach that he wrote music for a living, no question. But then in addition to a cantata or two every week there are these sublimely tiny works he compiled for exercises and the cornucopia that is (are?) the Goldberg Variations.

Several times in places like The Baffler, most recently about the now infamous Brooks "sandwich" piece ("To feel at home in opportunity-rich areas, you’ve got to [...] possess the right attitudes about David Foster Wallace") and the Outline ("Applebee’s America, or whatever we’re calling it now, is entirely content to remain unfamiliar with artisanal bistros and David Foster Wallace"). But there I go summing up social media again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am

If anything, @fred, I can surmise that Brooks is making DFW out to be a dog whistle for the Left ("Left"), in that, if you don't have the "right attitude" about his work (i.e., that it's genius, I guess), you are an outcast. But that's just a wildly uniformed guess.

They're are some people bringing new music back to Philly, Ars Nova, the club Johnny Brenda's, but I think more goes on in -Hip Brooklyn-in a week than goes on all year in Philly. I signed my lease, and I can bike to work in the winter, it's only a little over 5km. (I'd need a shower in the summer, it usually 34 C by 9am.)

The person who should call the tune?

sometimes it's as important to me to feel the music. if i turned headphones up enough to do that i'd have a constant headache!

Hi, @ngh! Congrats on the lease-signing. That's a big day.

I'm not entirely paternalistic/patriarchal, but having become a family man late-ish in life, I'm habituated to a playlist of my own devising. It's one of the few sacrifices I can't or won't make. I get the attraction to 'phones, but I've never found them comfortable, and the reorientation of the source of the music from outside the skull to inside disturbs me.

for me it's also that i'm usually doing other things while i listen to music, so i just want to fill the apartment with sound.
...it's enough of a priority to me that i've stated this in my craigslist ad for a housemate - that they need to be down with that.

This Frank Wright track is worth turning the volume up some

The day before I left NYC, I sat on my turtle shell headphones. They still work, I just need to piece them together. Good pair, they have 4m of cord, so, at work, I almost never need to take them off. (although I have cordless headphones i got as a gift, but the sound quality isn't the same).

...& there's so much to listen to now w/ podcasts &tc. ...
The structure always falls apart before the speaker part of the phones...

Hi. Looks like, due to a computer glitch at the mothership, this ep was not preserved. So there is unfortunately no archived show; sorry about that!
