Listening to the Pop Up from the web site, still on the stream...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Is anyone listening via iTunes or a .pls stream?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:15am listener james from westwood:

Doug, if it helps with the mixed feelings, the night my mom died, after she accepted palliative care, and after she endured eight trips to the hospital for COPD, 4 months in a nursing home, and 2 bouts of respiratory arrest and ventilator intubation, I slept more deeply than I had for 2 years since her decline began.
Also: You may eventually, soon or even surprisingly distant from now, just completely let loose with grief and accumulated tension. This is also OK. It helps.
YMMV on all of this as on everything.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:16am listener james from westwood:

I'm on iTunes. Was on the stream at 9, then saw here folks could hear. I opened a non-GTDR stream then flipped back to GTDR, and I was on. Maybe the same will work w the popup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James (and all)
I have the great benefit of having observed this experience up close with Jessie and her mom three years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

Is anyone now listening via pop-up player?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:18am doctorjazz:

Not on my end, I open and close the pop up, keep getting the stream (which is pretty nice sounding, of course).
Been there as well, Doug, one of the joys of getting older...

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:20am listener james from westwood:

Why do I have the feeling that I've heard "Hindustan" in other forms, possibly as someone's in-theme or talkover music, somewhere on the station? Just getting that Proustian playlist feeling!

Avatar 9:45am annie:

in the mid-70s i worked in a nursing home with a wide range of ages and mind-sets in the residents, from far-gone to very lucid and present. my favorite people were the ones who had the stories embedded in their memories, with no clue to the present time.. i wonder if you chronicled the stories you heard from your dad's memories. i wonder how big that book is now, doug, the one you're writing..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Guilty as charged.

@Jessie
Interesting question. Would you mind if I pondered the answer for another 40 years or so?
  9:47am melinda:

I'm sorry to hear about your dad, Doug. I read the fbook tribute via someone else the other day, it was interesting and touching.
  9:47am Jessie:

40 years still sounds like a long time, but it used to sound a lot longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Mr Reverend Doctor C! Hello everybody! I am a little ferklempt and not able to comment as regularly and rapidly as usual today. Apologies if I miss you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

This Teddy Wilson number is just about the baddest bad-ass song of all time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

@Jessie
Lincoln would play Billie Holiday's "Lover Man" for me. And then she would play Billie Holiday's "Some Other Spring" (because I can't decide between the two). We will hear the latter in a moment...
Avatar 9:54am still b/p:

That you're doing this at all today is pretty powerful and admirable. My thoughts and condolences added to all the others.
My dad at 90 is doing relatively well, but with failing knees is too proud to use a cane for walks in public. At 90, why give a shit about appearances and an inhibiting self-consciousness? And why not be constructively self-attentive? Wellll, the question for (middle-aged) young 'uns, of course, is why ask such questions in vain about what the elders oughta do or not do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Stanley:

Thanks for sharing your wonderful tribute to your father, Doug. What a lovely man (and son).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Lovely of you to say, Stanley.

@still b/p
My father was in ridiculously good physical shape. Had both hips replaced, but that was it. The hospital stay in 2006 for his first hip surgery was his first time in a hospital since toddlerhood.
Avatar 10:01am still b/p:

Wow...good genes, good living? Given the period of his life, do we assume he ate a standard American diet and had a mostly standard lifestyle for a long era before all sorts of warnings rained and reigned for all of us...?

Since this documentary was first broadcast, a live recording of Coltrane at Temple University presents evidence of Trane beating his chest and chanting during a live performance. Chilling stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Oh the books I'll be reading, still b/p!
  11:18am Dean:

My deepest, most sincere sympathies, Doug. Trying to catch up here after a few days away with my 90YO mother. Brought the kids, and there was a lot of childlike laughter for the three days we visited. But I know the worry that an aging parent can provoke. Boy, do I know it.

Another book title: John A. Farrell's new biography, Richard Nixon: The Life. Truly, a delightful read, replete with new details of Nixon's life, including Farrell's fair journalistic attempts to psychoanalyze a President well worth psychoanalyzing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Olatunji drop more knowledge in 2 minutes than in 20 books about music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Love to you and your mom. Thanks. That book sounds like a perfect read for me. But I promise to continue to despise Nixon no matter how humanized he gets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

July 17 this year, the 50th anniversary of John's death, is also a Monday.
  11:28am Dean:

Thanks, Doug. True. Farrell certainly humanizes him and gives him credit where due. This gives the reader leave to despise the man, rather than the office, which is understandably how we tend to relate to POTUS. For example, Nixon's racism (and anti-Semitism and sexism) was deep, and yet he occasionally struggled to overcome it. But when racism afforded him political leverage, he exercised it mightily.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:28am doctorjazz:

Want to catch the "Get Me Roger Stone" doc, seems he spent lots of time with Richard Nixon, and is a big fan of Tricky Dick.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:29am doctorjazz:

Seems Stone cut his teeth with the Nixon Tricksters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Stone is still doing his dark work.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31am doctorjazz:

He's the man behind Trumpster (or at least one of them, and one of the earliest to see him as a Presidential Candidate)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

Those edits of Baraka's poem are on the original documentary.
  11:33am Dean:

I thought Stone appeared in the book, but he's not in the index. A footnote on a page midway through enumerates a "list of prime movers in American politics and government who cut their teeth with Nixon." BTW, the book is mostly end-noted, most of which are mere references to sources, rather than substantive glosses. The text flows uninterrupted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
I am the world's biggest fan of Robert Caro and his LBJ volumes. Waiting for the final volume has been excruciating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

So so many voices interviewed in this documentary who are now gone: Olatunji, Alice Coltrane, Steve Lacy, Rashied Ali, Amiri Baraka, Sekou Sundiata, Makanda—just from this episode alone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

The wonderful Bobby Zankel is still with us and is participating in a number of fantastic Coltrane 50th anniversary happenings in Philadelphia.
Avatar 11:48am Jeff:

I've been torn about watching the Stone doc. On the one hand, it'd add detail to my knowledge of the destruction that a-hole has helped cause, which I guess is good. On the other hand, I have enough rage in my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome Jeff "The man who made today's show possible" Moore!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:
