I have to say, that for a 45 with almost 5 minutes jammed into the grooves, Life on Mars sounds pretty good

Funky16Corners:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience at their jazziest, thanks to Mitch Mitchell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Parq:

I was just thinking, Irwin expounded at some length a while back on Mitchell's jazz-influenced drumming, and it really does come out on this track, big-time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

He was a powerhouse. His playing pre-Hendrix with Georgie Fame is top notch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

...Mitch Mitchell was the Jimi Hendrix of the drums; the perfect compliment, together with a solid, hold-it-down kind of bassist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, I was digging Noel Redding's bass solo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
coelacanth∅:

was Noel on that track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, one of the few all-JHE tracks on the album (i.e. without guests)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

If the Discogs breakdown is to be believed: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Parq:

Redding vs Cox. Decisions, decisions.

(Yes, I know, Redding by a landslide, but he does lose points for a really terrible solo album in the mid 70s. And let's not be too quick to slag Billy.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

I wouldn't slag Billy. He's part of Jimi's more soulful drift toward the end
Avatar 10:57pm
geezerette:

This version sounds minimal and isn't. Like it very much.
  10:57pm
mgrog:

Who's the vocalist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm

Valerie Simpson
Avatar 10:57pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth∅:

interesting. wikipedia says bass was played by Jimi on "1983..." (which is what you played - not to be a wise-ass!)
...i'd consult my Eddie Kramer book if i were home. i think he runs it down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm

It's amazing how Quincy took a fairly small piece from HAIR and fleshed it out like this

mgrog:

Of Ashford and Simpson?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

The same
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

i think i like Cox just as much as Redding. i like the reformed experience (Jimi, Mitch, Billy) the best of all, i think.
Avatar 11:01pm
geezerette:

ahhhhh... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Parq:

Most Hendrik cookoos I've known have been Noel all the way. I never quite bought it, and I'm glad there are other people who see it my way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Parq:

Dang, Larry, this is *such* a good show so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks! I'm glad you're digging it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

Parq, i like that Billy held it down, amongst 2 immense, textural players... not that Noel didn't do the job, but he was a guitarist who begrudgingly became a bassist; and i think it manifest as not-as-heavy a bass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
coelacanth∅:

ah, very sweet! you're Killing it Larry!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm

And you're in Colorado, too. For shame...
  11:27pm
mgrog:

I'll have to listen again from the archive.
When do we get a snippet from Plan 9?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll have to dig one out for a future show. Perhaps something by Criswell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Funky16Corners:

And now, back into a more traditionally psychedelic head space...
  11:30pm
mgrog:

Aw yeaaaah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Thank you Mister Barrett
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Parq:

Coalesc, @ 11:06 -- I think that may have been what impressed my friends back in the day. Redding played bass more like a guitar, which struck some people as more "musician-ly", whereas Billy played bass the way I used to (or tried to -- I never did get very good as a bassist, or as a guitarist).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

You didn't see too many bassists in the 60s, at least on the rock side, breaking away from the standard issue styles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm

Would "60 Pounds of Moon Rocks" be a good name for a band? Why or why not? Discuss.

  11:44pm
cupcakejenny:

Like you forgot the camera at the birth of your first kid! Lol
  11:44pm
mgrog:

I suppose 8miles high isn't funky enough. Or Mr Spaceman. Ezra is saying that Pink Floyd had a number of space related tunes... Not surprisingly
Avatar 11:44pm
geezerette:

tribute band is Pop Rox, sounds like a dad band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Funky16Corners:

Plus a series of 'Pebbles' albums for the tots
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
coelacanth∅:

Parq, i agree with your friends too! -and i certainly never had a problem with Noel's playing...just maybe i liked Billy's playing more because it allowed for more freedom for the 2 freedom Lovers to fly...but then maybe it's just that i like the bluesy stuff that the later experience was getting into the best, and it happened to be Billy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

"60 pounds of moon rocks" reminds me of a spot a girlfriend, who grew up nearby, brought me to called "ringing rocks". -in pa,usa; it's a dried up river bed with various sized rocks that are positioned on various sized other rocks - instead of buried in soil; so with nothing to dampen the vibration, they rang, in many tones, when you hit them. (with a hammer, or other rocks.
...6,000,000 pounds of moon rocks.
