I think I have curious anti-tick luck. I worry because Lyme's too common here in Maine, where I get out in the woods and scrub often enough, and there's some biking and wandering around Cape Cod where it's an even greater risk. But I rarely find a wood or deer tick aboard my carcass or clothes, and can't remember if I ever had one embedded. Howz come?

@βrian
My father's memory of his service in the Battle of the Bulge was just about the last solid grounding in reality he had. Lost that about six months ago. Up until about six weeks ago, he still recognized me when I walked in the room. Seeing his eyes brighten and his brow unfurrow was a major lift for me (and surely him). On Father's Day, we went to visit him with a cake and he was chowing it down and chattering away, though still very out of it.

Sorry to hear about your Dad Doug. Best thoughts and prayers to you all.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20am Brian in UK:

It is such a tease to think that you are recognised and things are good, then you realise that it is a front, not deliberately projected but still a front. You can end a visit more confused than your loved one.
Give me a broken leg any day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Obviously things can and will change, but so far I am doing OK. Having gone through this (albeit from a distance) with my mother 18 months ago, and from up close with my mother-in-law three years ago, I have some useful experience to guide me.
Avatar 10:21am ausmanx:

doug, good luck, we do what we can. my dad's 92. still relatively good, but terrified and keeps talking about dementia. his strongest memories now are also of US Navy air training at Corpus Christi in 1945... the impact of these things is a reminder that we who never went to war can barely begin to imagine it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24am Brian in UK:

ausmanx that is why those people only ever talked about it amongst themselves. Words are useless to those who were not present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

I have talked more with my father about his time in the war in the past two years than in the previous 54. (Because he never ever talked about it.) And yet, my dear gentle, soft-spoken father was a bona fide hero. Received the Silver Star in 1944. Was one of the first Americans on German soil. Two Purple Hearts. Narrowly cheated sure death on at least two occasions. Blessedly, I was able to hear the stories.

Sorry to hear all the problems with your dad, Doug. Been there as well, my mom was out of it when she passed at age 90 (she took a swing at me once in a hospital room when I wouldn't get her discharged). My mother in law was doing relatively well on that front, reached 100 last fall, now is losing it mentally and physically. Tough stuff...(no good way to do this, though, my dad passed at a younger age than I currently am, sudden isn't better).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

My father made it to 95 relatively unscathed. The past two plus years have been rougher terrain. Most would sign up for that.
  10:49am willcrete:

Doug- that blog post is a great memorial to Larayane (and in turn to the many of generous ears and mind who have helped Chicago remain such a creative space). Also, lovely photo of Douglas and Larayane. Would I be correct in guessing that it was taken at one of Douglas' Crepescule happenings in Chicago's Washington Park during the early 2000's? Those were great gatherings.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Parq:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

@willcrete
Have you seen the new Coltrane film? I haven't, but have been told it used none of the recordings of Trane's own words. What foolishness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Pat Patrick, father of the ex Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick.
  11:45am willcrete:

Hey Doug- That new film actually just finished showing in Chicago (where I listen from) this week, but I had been out of town for the long holiday weekend and did not get a chance to see it. I heard however that it is just tons of "famous" talking heads... most of whom did not know Coltrane (such as, among others, Bill Clinton)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

I have heard no good things about it. The director, the story goes, wanted to make a film that would introduce Coltrane to a new audience. Oy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Jeff Golick:

...via talking heads. Meanwhile, the music is just sitting there, doesn't require much of an introduction.
Avatar 11:50am hyde:

@willcrete please tell me they didn't talk to Dave Grohl. Dave Grohl is my music documentary kryptonite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

And yet, this Steve Rowland documentary is wall-to-wall with talking heads. The wisdom and director experience with which the experts here speak of Coltrane is fairly miraculous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

Well, yeah. Exception that proves the rule?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

And, the music speaks for itself when the experts aren't speaking (the main frustration of documentaries is that the music is always snippets, always want to hear the whole thing. That, of course, would take a 100 hour documentary...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

I saw Pharoah play in Brooklyn a couple of weeks ago. It was like looking at history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

After I received permission from Steve Rowland to rebroadcast this doc on my show in 2007, he asked me to wait until he secured permission from Alice Coltrane. She had some issues but eventually gave it her blessing.

Her blessing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

You went, Jeff?! You went!
Avatar 11:56am burke:

I would love to have Alice Coltrane's blessing.
  11:57am willcrete:

As for the film, it indeed sounds like they missed the boat. After all, is not one of the many beauties of listening to Coltrane, that each time we hear a recording of him playing has the potential to make us feel like we are hearing the music for the very first time. That is, one metaphysics of "hearing Coltrane" might recognize that there is ultimately no difference between a listener who has been listening to Coltrane for years and one hearing him for the first time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, burke!

One thing that stands out about Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone is the sheer volume of Trane's music you get to hear during the broadcast.
