PJ:

Midnight Rambler is probably my least favorite Stones song, mostly because it is an interminable about a serial killer, but somebody got the right combination of drugs to the band on this night, because this version is smoking.

This is one of my favorite songs. Not just because its long but because MT just rips it up almost every time. Great version. Also, I'm a Stones nut and have never played them on the show before.

Good morning, all.

Evening from NorCal. Great segue! Brussels is the Stones at their best(although the Aussie '73 tour is even wilder).

Greetings from Catskills Mr Conklin!starting off with a bang...always nice to be in the ghetto!pigpen!!

Well, now we can see why The Dead were not signed to Stax. (Apologies to the Dead fans, but the vocals, among other things, have always left me blase.) But I do appreciate that they had good taste.

The Elevators had levitation for sure but the Dead had a lot more ;)

...a point you have made, & which I now bring up w/ everybody: the simple fact that the Dead played - all - the - time - allowed a whole different sort of thing to happen around them...The Elevators code *was* to never play unless tripping - but they certainly had no scene like the Acid Tests which the Dead had the freedom to develop in - quite the opposite in Texas...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am
coelacanth∅:

Mick Taylor composed the git part for honky tonk woman; wrote moonlight mile; wrote can't you hear me knockin', and most of the rest of sticky fingers - the 'stones best album....etc etc....midnight rambler has very little to do with the Great musician, Mick Taylor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am

Too much filler on Stones albums. Nothing of note for way too long either. Dead horse flogged.

no filler on sticky fingers, or between the buttons, for that matter.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am
coelacanth∅:

hey Jeff - was anyone here telling anyone else their opinion wasn't valid?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am
Mark R.:

I love the Mick Taylor era of the Stones, but I think it's true that he was cheated out of many songwriting credits, which also happened to Ron Wood for many years. I'm glad they finally released "The Brussels Affair" officially. I had a cassette copy of it from "The King Biscuit Flower Hour" that I played to death. They were really playing great that night and it's a nice chance to hear some "Goats Head Soup" tunes like "Dancing with Mr. D." and "Heartbreaker." I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Taylor briefly in a hotel lobby a few years back when he was doing a few tunes with them on their tour. A very nice gentleman, he looked great (I know he'd had his struggles over the years, but he seemed quite healthy), and he said he was really enjoying the tour.
Avatar 1:30am
Jeff Conklin:

@Coel: You're there telling me Midnight Rambler has nothing to do with MT, which, I mean, is demonstrably false.
Avatar 1:33am
Jeff Conklin:

And I said I loved that version because of MT's playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am
Mark R.:

Mick was not on the original recording on "Let It Bleed" (which is great in its own way), but on all those great live versions, he was a big part of it, especially as time went on, he developed that great slide part for it, which you featured tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am
coelacanth∅:

yeah, he played git on it.
...so because i said this i'm telling you your opinion is wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am
coelacanth∅:

it was composed before Taylor joined the band, and shows nothing of the sophistication that was obvious on the entirety of sticky fingers.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50am
Mark R.:

That is quite a hand grenade, but I'll say what I'd say if I was running for office--honestly, I love both bands, and "Revolver" was a wonderful album, and so was "Let It Bleed," and they're very different and fabulous, each in their own way. Please vote for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am
Mark R.:

I saw Yes on their "Going for the One" tour, the first one where Rick Wakeman rejoined the band, and it was everything I hoped it would be, right down to flowing sleeves and the waist-deep fog during the "Get Up Get Down" section of "Close to the Edge."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00am
