Hello Sir Doug and Drummers. Today is Gizmo the Cat's 10th birthday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

Very happy 10th to Giz and duke!
Avatar 8:51am glenn:

rainy. baking bread. no cat birthdays here. many happy returns to gizmo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am Doug Schulkind:

Raining again here, too. Means I can't rake up the backyard leaves from last fall for a 974th consecutive day.
  9:00am Mr C:

What's easy to do for two/is so hard to be done by one. Monica and Doug, two titans, take it to the stage at the same time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

Y'all should go enjoy Monica over on WFMU, but come back at 11am (ET) for Part 2 of the Coltrane documentary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Stanley:

Too righty Mr C.
Yo Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

Yo ho ho, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Doug Schulkind:

The NOW PLAYING info on the playlist is more like a doctoral dissertation!
Avatar 9:10am Monica:

Avatar 9:11am glenn:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37am Brian in UK:

Hello DJ Lacey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

You are under musical arrest, Brian in UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Webhamster Henry:

Oh yeah - now I don't have to do push ups!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Webhamster Henry:

BTW my band is doing a show tomorrow with Andes Manta, four Ecuadorian brothers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Webhamster Henry:

But they are less volatile than these guys.
  9:45am Alex in Illinois:

This is a greeting? For a while, it sounded like they were trying to see who can do the most push ups or sit ups.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

My best friend in early elementary school was a kid from Ecuador.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:46am Artie Haywire:

What madness is this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Webhamster Henry:

We're doing a few tunes in Quechua.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex
Maybe they are greeting each other in a Planet Fitness?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Because of course you are, Webhamster Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Uncle Michael:

I hope this is the extended mix of En tu Duc Es Pensament.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

This is the club mix, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Uncle Michael:

Awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

According to Google Translate, this song title is...

"En tu Duc Es Pensament"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Next two songs from Tonga had me weeping the other night. Just kept listening to them over and over and over. So gorgeous.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:53am Brian in UK:

The Very Best of Hugh Tracey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Insipid title, I agree, Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Webhamster Henry:

Ethnomusicology FTW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

It is the great lava flow of my musical desire, Henry.
  9:58am Mark Williams:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Webhamster Henry:

English has 3,000 synonyms for "Drunk".
Avatar 10:01am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:05am Brian in UK:

Maybe those people thought it might steal their souls in the same way years ago it was thought that when you had your photograph taken the same would happen.
Avatar 🥁 10:06am βrian:

WFMUing with Doug. Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

Woofing and MUing! Hello, βrian.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

It's good to have a good cry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Belatedly: that New Music New York 1979 record is sort of a magical document.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

Brilliant New Orleans drummer James Black is on this Yusef record. Stroke of genius to include his strokes of genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
It's a touchstone. A lodestar. A benchmark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Happy 45th birthday to Title IX!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30am Brian in UK:

Love that record, Brian. But you knew that.
Avatar 🥁 10:33am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Just in time, JtotheK!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:57am Brian in UK:

Was she not the ONLY lady of Immediate?
Avatar 10:58am northguineahills:

@βrian: I have an empty set ( ∅ ) (Mika Vaino solo project) record. It sounded like minimal electronic bleeps w/ occasional rhythmic clicks.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00am doctorjazz:

Out of town, have a few minutes to listen and check in, hiya drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14am doctorjazz:

This is a fabulous demo tonality and modality...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

You don't have to "know," just hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Giant Steps is math and science.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Uncle Michael:

Metronome can kiss my ass.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:19am Brian in UK:

Are Giant Steps and Coltrane Jazz twins.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20am doctorjazz:

What a bad review, wow! Wouldn't want to be that reviewer later...
Avatar 🥁 11:20am duke:

Whoever wrote that Metronome review should have their reviwer's license revoked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Coltrane Jazz came after the Giant Steps deep investigations period. Coltrane Jazz begins the period of expressionism.

That Metronome reviewer can be forgiven. There is no way he or she could have any real understanding of what exactly was going on during Trane's Giant Steps solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Andrew White here is the greatest Coltrane historian in terms of the music. He was a member of the JFK Quintet in the early '60s in Washington, DC. So him perform many times during my young adulthood in the D.C. area. What a brilliant man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Strap on your seat belts, folks.
  11:27am raissa:

bliss, thanks Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Cosmic overview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

The solo IS the composition.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am Brian in UK:

The feeling I get is that even religion was not high enough for John Coltrane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Trane's disappointment with religion's insufficiency and inconsistency —suggests you are onto something, Brian in UK.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am Brian in UK:

It is difficult to take someone elses own intensity to one's own interior; it is so demanding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

"I thank Coltrane for being."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:50am Brian in UK:

If Monica is a vessel, you must be a conduit, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Conduit to it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:
