Those Alan Watts talks were regularly broadcast on KSAN SF while Watts was still alive. I grew up listening to them with the lights off and the moon shining through my window.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm listener james from westwood:

That sounds like a perfect setting for Watts absorption. I have clear memories of sitting in my car listening through the end of a lecture rather than go in to my destination. Same with Joe Frank.

True story from the machine learning front: a researcher was complaining that his neural network got poor results because of human error (the task was classifying electronic/analog electric/acoustic instruments). His main complaint was that harpsichord was deemed acoustic, when his system said it was electronic, which was obviously true to him

It's no coincidence that the harpsichord enjoyed a revival in the '60s, when the Moog synthesizer entered the vocabulary of the arranger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm cklequ:

The best thing about this is that i wouldn't even know With Or Without You was playing if i couldn't see the playlist.
Avatar 5:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yes, the playlist ruins everything. That was the point of my originally starting to playlist, to prove how terrible data is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm fred:

@ljfw: my senior year was 1989. I was banned from the "prom", so I don't know what they played
@pss: that was actually his point: synths can sound like convincing harpsichords
Avatar 5:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(and to prove its opposite)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm pacific standard simon:

James: you can sway to it. Preferably while brushing casually against the erogenous zones of your date.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm fred:

@melinda: "prom" here is just a party thrown by students. I was viewed as a troublemaker, mainly because when my school made up a rule that I could only enter one national academic contest, I chose English over math. Also, I didn't apply for a prep school and chose to go to a public college. You can't outmild my rebellion, but that was too much for other students. Teenagers are conformists

Rich: Until recently, that was the main page of the site, and was so going back to 1994
Avatar 6:22pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich: Oh man, that's my genre! Heavy meta.
Avatar 6:23pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rare man behind the scenes behind the scenes moment: I'm operating 39 faders during this moment of the show, not including all the shows within shows playing that themselves had me doing the same, spanning back to 2002 in this case
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Rand al'Thor:

I've been listening to both last week's episode and "Other Shapes are Possible" a lot lately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Rand al'Thor:

Jeez, that's a lot of faders.
Avatar 6:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Last week's episode ("Your Turn to Be Happy") is really relistenable! lastever.org...
Avatar 6:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I listen to the live stream with Winamp, which displays the live stream info so compactly and completely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm fred:

Which is why winamp has been trashed, in favor of pieces of software like iTunes that display nothing but demands for your credit card number
Avatar 6:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Winamp 5.5 FOREVER
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Rand al'Thor:

Still love WinAmp. Have tried foobar, but can't get a nice, compact layout like WinAmp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm pacific standard simon:

fred: Only true on a superficial level. You can do sitting meditation at baseball games. Cricket too, I guess.
Avatar 6:30pm geezerette:

It IS too much! :)
Avatar 6:31pm mossy lightouse:

i think i had winamp 5 at some point, but then i have had 2.91 for a while, i should retry a newer version at some point!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Rand al'Thor:

Is that Zelda music I hear?
Avatar 6:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

No Zelda music that I'm aware of, BUT I do hear a phone caller, so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm melinda:

I loved 3-2-1 Contact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm pacific standard simon:

Foobar gives me the data I need to download stuff.
Avatar 6:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

You might mean the Sweet Valley song "One" actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm fred:

I confess to using winamp 5.666
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Rand al'Thor:

I've got my scanner hooked into my mixer and occasionally hear local emergency service chatter added to the mix.
Avatar 6:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

There's a lot of 3-2-1 Contact in "Children's Television Voteshop", a popular favorite: lastever.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm pacific standard simon:

Although 'being here now' probably means you should never download stuff, HA HA.
Avatar 6:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I believe the original author of Winamp still uses Winamp 5.5
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm listener james from westwood:

Paltrow's gonna try to get Hopkins to do Kegels while drinking some kind of moss smoothie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm melinda:

I like this Proof combo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm melinda:

@james hahaha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm fred:

Winamp isn't fancy, but it's lightweight and, more importantly, works. No wonder you like it, Kenzo, it's close to your design signature
Avatar 6:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Does anyone appreciate the obsessively completeish playlist with well timed accu times and titles in the live player? This is hard hard hard work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Rand al'Thor:

I appreciate the hard work. Thank you, Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm melinda:

I appreciate it.
Avatar 6:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

In 2014 I used an automated script that directly hooked from me hitting live samples into the KenzoDB playlist system. I haven't re-hooked that up yet
Avatar 6:43pm geezerette:

same!
Avatar 6:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Winamp is ridiculously functional
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Rand al'Thor:

Something sounds like thunder in this mix and I have to take off my headphones to make sure it isn't thundering here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm fred:

I don't appreciate it as it happens, but I'm thankful for it when I listen again, or when I try to layer two shows so that samples align (yes, I did try to do that, failed at it, but succeeded at enjoying the result)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm melinda:

this is lovely
Avatar 6:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I can't even believe any of this exists. I have to watch the videos and listen 15 times in a row and I believe it for a vanishing moment here and there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm pacific standard simon:

I confess that I look at the playlist less often than you would wish. I recognize a great deal, though.
Avatar 6:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This show is going to end at 6:55, and then I'll immediately post the higher quality archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Rand al'Thor:

Then I'm gonna listen to this from the start, hear what I missed.
Avatar 6:46pm mossy lightouse:

Yes! The playlist is basically like you are listening to an orchestral performance and transcribing the notes and dynamics for multiple instruments into something that is more open ended than music notation. It is another part of the shows! : )
Avatar 6:47pm geezerette:

It's a dream state.
Avatar 6:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Gary Sullivan's Bodega Pop live will be up next on the Give the Drummer Radio stream! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Rich in Washington:

I appreciate accurately timed playlist, both as an obsessive radio listener and compulsive radio creator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Rich in Washington:

Nothing more difficult than documenting layered sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm pacific standard simon:

Most people process climax in less time than that...
Avatar 6:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I don't know what I'm going to do in this slot for the next three weeks, but something! Something! Please hold this space for me cooperatively, as wisened citizens, no matter how I may appear or ether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm listener james from westwood:

What doesn't get documented ends up as an Easter egg for the attentive listener!

Thanks, Kenzo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Rich in Washington:

I literally do not know what I am going to do next.
Avatar 6:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If you haven't emailed me to say hello, please do! ken at lastever.org. And please click the star icon in the upper left corner and also to the right of this episode title, so I remember you were here!
Avatar 6:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich: The archive links are ALREADY up. You can backwards and be in your next now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rand al'Thor:

Thank you for the show, Kenzo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rich in Washington:

isn't next now officially noxt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm melinda:

I haven't had a date since the advent of smartphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Rich in Washington:

if Ken Nordine has his way, that is...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm fred:

Thanks Kenzo. It hurts to leave when Gary is about to start his great show, but I have to sleep at some point. And catch the start of Olivia's show. It's worth checking out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Rand al'Thor:

I've never been on a date.
Avatar 6:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Thanks to all of you for being here. And for those who are quiet, those who called in, those who emailed, those who used the Facebook page...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm melinda:

The odd assortment of familiar names in the playlist is boggling. Thanks for your transcription, Kenzo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Rand al'Thor:

(and I'm an adult, darn it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Rich in Washington:

Don't feel bad. Smartphones seemed to have nullified most human interaction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rich in Washington:

woah. That's abrupt. Like life. What will I do now/noxt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rand al'Thor:

Until next time, everyone.
Avatar 6:56pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

And I release. Decompression time, 4 minutes of it. Let it all out here and now before Gary officially begins!
Avatar 6:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If you really want the transcript, you have to click all the "hear this other show" links within as well...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Rich in Washington:

It was the phone I was listening on. I made a disparaging comment on smartphones and it killed the stream.
Avatar 6:58pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Keep your phone away and in "airplane mode" at nearly all times. Call upon other humans to do the same
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Rich in Washington:

I was once listening to a Dave Emory show and I couldn't tell where the current show was because of all the flashback/insert segments. Is he still doing radio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Rich in Washington:

Here comes Gary.
Avatar 7:02pm mossy lightouse:

I think the upcoming Wednesday shows will be very exciting; it has been a few years since you have been able to introduce shows that have only been heard once by most people from your archives during the show's broadcast space!
