Yo, Stanley!
(went to hear a fun band last night-here's the promo...
Dave Sewelson and Dave Hofstra of Microscopic Septet are playing tonight at Issyra Gallery, a truly remarkable space on Observer Highway in Hoboken. (Also in the combo, Joe Ruddick,)
The gallery is a hidden gem - the place literally overflows with traditional African sculpture and visual art, plus contemporary African art and work by local artists, from floor to ceiling pipes. Our friend Gigi Keenan, a brilliant mosaic-collage artist, has several beautiful small and large mandalas on display, a kind of personal / feminist reappropriation - the collages are made up of tiny pieces of old Playboy photo spreads).

It was a free-jazz show (in all meanings) (so free, the drummer, who also owns the space, told me he doesn't actually know how to play drums). They sounded great, though.
Avatar 4:14pm
geezerette:

@docjazz, that sounds wonderful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
David D:

Yes, that does sound great - send them all over here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
doctorjazz:

It was fun; one of those shows that 6 people came to (and 3 of them were connected to the space or the musicians).
Dragging a bit today, though, getting harder to go out on school nights...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
David D:

That does sound like fun - a private performance! School nights should be over for the summer soon, or won't that make things easier?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
doctorjazz:

It still seems like "school nights", though I've been out of school for quite some time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
David D:

Ah, everything in Germany seems to revolve around the school calendar, for just about everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
Stanley:

David, I was wondering whether Leipzig was previously in East Germany, given the style of architecture I see sometimes on the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
David D:

Yes, indeed, Stanley. Leipzig was and is very much in the East, lots of reminders everywhere, even 26 years on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
doctorjazz:

There is a Klezmer band in the states called Kapelye (or at least there was--I have one of their albums, Kapelye's Chicken), is that the same band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
doctorjazz:

There was lots in the news at the reunification of differences between the old East and West Germany, though recent articles seem to imply that that has evened out. Not so, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
David D:

No, this Kapelye is from Sweden - I guess it is kind of a generic term...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
doctorjazz:

Ochichornya?
Avatar 4:49pm
geezerette:

"Light Flight" is one of my favorite songs! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
David D:

That could be it, Doc - good catch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
David D:

Geezerette: It is indeed lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
David D:

Yes, some aspects of life have evened out in some parts of the East, but not really everywhere. And I would say there is still a considerable cultural divide.

Good evening to you, Brian! Funny you ask, since Carl Zeiss is originally and partly still in Jena, where Jenaer Glas is also from (see photo). I also happen to have gone to university there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm

Brian: Yes, Jena is one of the more prosperous places in today's East, lots of start-ups and innovation. Nice place to study as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
Stanley:

Bloody good, Brian. Highlights included the Tile Museum, pastel de nata (custard pies), multi-cultural back street neighbourhoods and a local fiesta. We both want to go back.
