Once as a very young tot with my mother in downtown D.C., we got caught in some tear gas during a Vietnam war protest. When the robust of chant of "Fuck the Pigs" arose from the rallyers nearby, I (supposedly) said to my mother, "Why do the want to fuck the pigs? I thought fucking was good."

Mr. Mercer was the first black news announcer on WINS in New York and, as Rosko, the first black disc jockey on KBLA in Los Angeles. HE WENT ON TO BECOME A PIONEER OF FREE-FORM FM RADIO IN NEW YORK CITY. On WOR-FM in 1966 and on WNEW-FM from 1967 to 1970, his calm, husky voice with its hint of Southern drawl and his wide-ranging programming made him an authoritative companion amid the musical ferment of the late 1960's. For me, 1996 was an important transitional year in which I decided to pursue what I called Project Dream Keeper. The goal, to begin realizing projects which had been shelved for years. One such project was to produce a solo recording in celebration of the 20th anniversary of my first solo release, Tenor. With Tenor began a very important solo period which until now has never been documented on CD. Previous LP releases have long been out of print and difficult to find. I sincerely hope this is a new beginning. I wanted to return to the roots of my solo performances. — Joe McPhee

Found this... "I couldn't figure out what instrument could produce the sound that Souleyman sings over, and it was only until I looked up the countless grainy videos of his live performances that I realized it was just a Yamaha keyboard played really fucking fast. Paired with echoe-y yells of "Yallah!" and filtered through a shitty video recorder, Souleyman's sound accidentally found itself blurring the lines between folk, experimental, and prog music."
