Really happy to hear the first cult experience be an ex-Christian cult member being glib about the Jewish aspect to many Christian cult (and non-cult) stuff nowadays. It’s dysfunctionally the main reason Jews are treated withs one level of odd respect in the Christian world nowadays: We are supposed to be the “guardians” of ancient temples that “hold the line” just long enough before Jesus swoops down and does things.

i should consider myslef lucky that we never had to go to church. when my mother was a child she was dragged to a baptist church 7 days a week by her stepmother so it was the last place she wanted to go.

I was that kid that was never baptized. I would go to Sunday School and make faces at the kids in class through the window. I thought I was so rebellious. I do feel fortunate that I wasn't indoctrinated.

Hi Heidi, thank you for telling your story. I would love to hear a bit about some of the things you did to recover from the somatization/fibromyalgia type pain you suffered. “Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

Feathers in the Soul I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

Cult
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
melinda:

Good points, Emily. I think there are quieter cults everywhere.
  7:51pm
Danne D:

I remember one distinct time that felt like I was being recruited for a cult (I cannot say for sure that I was but it totally had that vibe).
My door bell rings and this just stunning girl is at the door - I mean just breathtaking. And she was sorta wearing a dark purple dress that had this newagey feel - thing like mage-y and she goes into this pitch her group or Bible study or what have you. But what I also noticed was the dude at the bottom of the stairs on the sidewalk with a shirt and tie (think conventional evangelist looking guy) and - not that these sorts of things appeal to me - the vibe was just all kinds of not right. But I could see where someone less willful (or alternately more trusting) than me would be swept up in a heartbeat and go with her to whereever they wanted me to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Greg from ZONE 5:

Cults! I gotta go back and listen to the archive…
  7:52pm
JakeGould:

What Emily is saying is right on the money. If it isn’t sensationalized it seems like “What’s the big deal?” When the damage is the same.

It’s like someone I know who is a therapist said about Michael Jackson: The guy might have never sexually abused a child, but his breach of social boundaries creeped the kids out and that is bad enough most of the time. Respect of boundaries and respect of individuals is the key to non-dysfunction.
  7:52pm
JakeGould:

@DanneD: Morons often use “hot chicks” as a recruitment tool… Maybe not in the larger cities, but elsewhere it happens.
  7:53pm
JakeGould:

I meant to say MORMONS!!!
  7:54pm
Danne D:

@Jake absolutely. the strong sense of set up was there. and the young lady did have something of a 'spaced out' - for lack of a better term air about her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
melinda:

I think I know the group you're talking about, and I have friends who have attended. They did not try to recruit me but they were defensive when I brought up the usual concerns.

Oh don't kid yourself Jake - morons do it too
Avatar 7:56pm
Heidi Hough:

i could not agree more, kim and emily. it takes realizing it, and it's so EASY ti be in denial.
  7:56pm
Listener Robert:

I actually think we need more social boundary breaching.

Anyway, I can see how cults might develop out of a religion I'm involved in, because the people who do a lot of work as leaders want recognition and control as leaders. Hard to blame them. As a result, however, the circles become clannish and "political", in the sense that it's hard to be friendly to some without dissing others.
  7:56pm
Tommy Jack Haynes:

Yes, this need more time ....do it again
  7:56pm
Danne D:

There was a massive evangelical populace on campus where I went to college so I became adept at picking off dubious pitches. (i.e. pretty much any time a pretty girl would randomly strike up a random convo with me)
  7:57pm
JakeGould:

“I actually think we need more social boundary breaching.” As long as you respect my right to tell you to eff off, I am okay with that attitude.
