Hi David and Subway riders!

Doctorjazz - welcome aboard!

Turning on, tuning in and dropping out
Yeah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
David D:

Good evening, Stanley!

KevinfromBayRidge:

Hi. Still trying to find the subway stop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
David D:

Kevin! You can ride it if you find it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
Stanley:

Good evening David, doctor.
I've just realised I've been listening to FMU since 8.30 this morning.
Samantha, Wake 'n' Bake, Garbage Time, Tony Coulter, an hour of the GTDR stream and now this wonderful show.
Managed to fit in a day's work on top of all this, too.
Happy days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
doctorjazz:

Man, Stanley, you take the FMU listening prize! (I did listen to Matt, Tony, caught up with the second half of Destination Out, and now David, though often I have to leave the room with the radio and do some work...)

Very excited-David Murray, sax man extraordinaire, had left NY for Paris, but it seems he moved back and is playing at the Village Vanguard this week (European loss). Going to see him tomorrow night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
David D:

Sounds great - WFMU days are the best days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
doctorjazz:

The back up band here listened to a lot of Johnny Cash. (the Pate Mustajarvi)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
David D:

Methinks a lot of them did - although maybe not all...
  4:37pm
Dean:

Oh, man, doctorjazz! I missed Murray here last month. Played with Kahil El'Zabar. Friend who went says it was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
doctorjazz:

(of course, you could argue that alternating bass was taken from European Oompah music).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
doctorjazz:

@Dean, saw him many times, many years ago, glad to hear the present show is great, psyched.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
Stanley:

@doctorjazz - I don't know, it seems that the station just gets better and better. There are so many shows I enjoy, especially on the Drummer stream and there's rarely a hiatus. Even then you've got Doug's record collection streaming away. Have you noticed how absolutely top class that is, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
David D:

Very good point, doctorjazz, what goes around comes around a little bit different each time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
doctorjazz:

Sure, Stanley, the stream is great. Doug's last show was him taking random stuff from his "not played" folder that he put together not having heard them, and it was great!
  4:42pm
Dean:

I've heard him a few times, including once at Phil Gelb's flat in Oakland. Phil prepares and serves a vegan dinner to twenty or so guests. Before dinner a performance by the guest of honor who joins the group for the meal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Stanley:

I remember. Doug's collection is a treasure trove.
Dean - what a great evening that must have been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
David D:

Don't worry this is the last one!
  4:47pm
Dean:

Gelb is amazing. I've heard Oliver Lake, Mark Dresser, and Joelle Leandre, too, at his place, i.e., three independent shows. But I regret missing Murray in Vallejo last month. Hoping doctorjazz will report back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
David D:

And yes, I cannot overemphasize how great the stream is even in automated mode!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
doctorjazz:

Ahh, those living/dining room concerts are great! I have a friend who does one a year (approximately) in Philly, ran down last time when he had Nels Cline, Gerald Cleaver, Larry Ochs play at his house. A friend who passed was an amateur drummer, used to get good folks up to his house for a great dinner and jam. There's a classical series that is organized in people's houses in the NY area, haven't gotten to any of them yet, hope to.
  4:52pm
Dean:

Cline/Cleaver/Ochs must have been wonderful. We also have the former Maybeck Hall here in town. With the new owner it is now dubbed Maybeck Studio. The concert series has veered considerably from the piano-centric programming we know from the Concord series. I heard Myra Melford and Satoko Fujii there. Lovely space.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
doctorjazz:

I have a good number of those Maybeck piano CD's. I'd love to see Myra Melford one of these days.
(I had seen the Ochs/Cline/Cleaver group in a Philly club a few nights before, was just amazing hearing them in the house, much better; as a bonus, Cline, who isn't shy about talking about himself, talked about his career, his music and other music, was a good time).
  5:01pm
Dean:

Been collecting those Maybecks on Concord for years, which causes no little trouble with duplication. Can't always remember which ones I already have. Same goes for the Kodaly Quartet's traversal of the Haydn SQs on Naxos.

Melford teaches two buildings away from where I sit at work. Kinda cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm
doctorjazz:

I have trouble keeping track of which Masada CD's I have...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
doctorjazz:

Time for some Klezmer...
  5:02pm
Dean:

Ha, ha! For sure! I don't even try with Zorn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
David D:

Doctorjazz: Indeed, just getting started...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
doctorjazz:

Speaking of Zorn, he has a show in a few weeks at the Village Vanguard as well, have to check with my social director and check if I'm free; may be his take on Jewish/Klezmer music.
  5:11pm
Dean:

Yow. Looks like it's Zorn with Steve Coleman, Tyshawn Sorey, and Christian McBride. The upcoming Murray show ensemble looks amazing, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
doctorjazz:

Always love this set, makes me smile (bit of a sad smile)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
David D:

Glad you do, doctorjazz.
  5:17pm
Dean:

This Schubert as performed by an amateur 'cellist was featured in Brideshead Revisited, iirc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm

One more time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
Stanley:

Gents, that's me away to ma bed.
Many thanks David for the interesting and enjoyable tunes.
Good night all.

Thanks for joining us this evening, Stanley - have a good night!

Cool this Barcelona Swing Serenaders-is it a recent recording or a recent reissue (sounds very 40's)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
David D:

Yes indeed, a touch of manouche as well - but founded in 1999!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm

Time to take you to the car for the drive home, thanks, David!

Thanks for tuning in, northguineahills! And thanks everyone for listening and commenting!
