Hey, Doug, looked at the end of Flash's show comments last night, saw you got through your classes. Congrats! Must feel great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, doc. Yes, I submitted my last paper yesterday. I am now 1/2 a social worker! Thanks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:48am doctorjazz:

Where/what kind of Social Work are you planning on when you're done, if I may ask? (figure this is already known on the thread, but OK if you'd rather not go into it).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am Doug Schulkind:

I plan to be working with older adults, doctorjazz.

Love the washboard suit, you got there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

This is a quite fine version of Wild Bill Jones, thanks to the Drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am melinda:

nice to wake up to banjo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Pleased to please you, Lore! Rise and shine, melinda!
Avatar 9:25am annie:

i know this has been happening to language since time immemorial, but it still saddens me to see a lovely word such as "gay" become twisted to mean only one thing now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Stanley:

@ annie - I feel sad for The Flinstones, on that one.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:26am doctorjazz:

This is bed music, but I really like it (The Fiddler...cool version)
  9:27am K Wilde:

Awesome first set
Avatar 🥁 9:29am duke:

Good morning Drummers
Avatar 9:29am Scraps:

annie, I'm sorry, but "twisted"? I mean, I don't know you, and I like you, but that means, to me, that means you think that means something bad, the people that use that word that way...
  9:30am melinda:

Delusions of Banjer
Avatar 9:32am annie:

not at all bad. and i'm as free-thinking as the next guy, the connotations for "gay" now rarely include happy.. i'm jusr sad at the deterioration of our langauge
Avatar 9:32am Scraps:

Unless you are thinking that the people who use it as an insult.... there are two common ways to use that word, of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Maggie B.:

noooooooo!
Avatar 9:33am Scraps:

Ah. Okay. ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Gary:

Whaaa ...? (Friday mornings)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:35am listener james from westwood:

Doug: 2017 would crush any person. 2017 + grad school is unimaginable. 2017 + grad school + doing amazing, life-affirming radio that I hate to miss live is worthy of more gold than I can bestow. You are KILLING IT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Uncle Michael:

I won't have your lead-in this fall, Doug? I'm SCREWED.
Avatar 🥁 9:36am duke:

Doug, you probably mentioned this before, but what are you studying in grad school? Advanced DummerSomeology, I hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

Give the Drummer Some won't be moving very far, but from late-August to mid-December, it will be moving.

Trust me, I find this deeply upsetting and unsettling, but there is no way around it. Luckily, I have wonderful and generous friends to accommodate me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
I am going for my MSW at the Univ. of Pittsburgh's School of Social Work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Maggie B.:

oops, that "nooo" was for Doug not being able to do his Friday morning show from Aug. to Dec. I will miss it badly and try to remember it's just the fall and early winter. a really long fall and early winter. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

@Maggie
I have literally wept over having to move my show for this period. But, the clouds parted and sun shone down on a pretty glorious solution.
Avatar 9:43am Scraps:

I guess, as a professional who uses words (copyeditor), it doesn't occur to me to feel sad -- that's words, historically, change.

But (if you don't know) the people who complain about gay falling out of use to mean happy, are usually people who, underneath their complaint, are complaing about gay to mean sexually. That's why i worded my question carefully-- because I didn't think you were a homophobe. But people could silently think to themselves, "she's one of us."

Sigh. Sorry. Too long an explanation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Never stop explaining, Scraps! You have much to add to the human condition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Stanley:

I'm away to make a cup of tea and I miss the news that the Friday morning show is on hold during the fall semester but moving to another slot thanks to a 'glorious solution'? I look forward to that as well as the Friday morning return (If I've got it right).
  9:46am Artie Haywire:

Good morning, Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Uncle Michael:

Language evolves. Most of what's described as deterioration, isn't. Being resistant to change is human.
Avatar 9:47am Scraps:

"Glorious solution"??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Stanley:

Scraps - per Doug 9.42
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Maggie B.:

and i will muddle through on those Fridays and follow you whatever day you re-sched.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

Gurmeet Bawa is going to take you on wild ride. Fair warning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Webhamster Henry:

I thought this punjabi note sounded familiar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Gary:

DAY-um, is she *really* holding this note?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Stanley:

I take Friday afternoons off work to be able to listen to this show.

Go Gurmeet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

@Maggie B
I didn't say I was leaving Fridays! I will announce the shift during my next mic break.

@Webhamster Henry
I almost played an auto-harp in the opening set. I didn't, but thought of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Webhamster Henry:

I got this record at the Tower Record Annex of blessed memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Gary:

Holy Jesus Lord this is amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Webhamster Henry:

I was going to request a little Pop Stoneman!
Avatar 9:51am Scraps:

Uncle Michael: you, sir, described this in three well-thought sentences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Stanley:

What Gary blasphemed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

I would say, conservatively, that I purchased 500 records at the Tower Annex. Hundreds upon hundreds of Folkways records for $1, then 50¢, then 25¢. And much more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

Just joining now, and am already over-stimulated. Someone please pass me my blankie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Gurmeet Bawa is the double espresso of the Punjabi epic love song set.
  9:54am Lore:

Years back, a friend got the Sarah Webster Fabio LP at the Tower Annex for a pittance. Is that where you got yours, Doug?
  9:54am davefromtoronto:

this tune's making my dog howl!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Stanley:

This has to be the track of my week.
Avatar 9:55am Scraps:

Oh man! I miss Tower Annex. Every once in a while they get in one classical label with prices slashed, and I would buy 200, 300, 400 dollars... that was great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Gurmeet Bawa makes what I like to call Are You Fucking Kidding Me music.
  9:55am thedunkel:

This dude can hold a note!
Avatar 9:56am Scraps:

Stanley, this is awesome, you're right

Oops, it's ended! Awww.
  9:56am davefromtoronto:

doug i think you just coined a new genre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Webhamster Henry:

Tower also had moved their experimental/Downtown (Ridgewood Radio friendly) records to the Annex from the little hallway in the main store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome aboard, davefromtoronto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Lore
I bought at least 10 copies of several Sarah Webster Fabio records at the Annex. Gave them away and sold a few at record fairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Gary:

What the $%&@ is making those groovy "shifting" sounds?
  10:03am Mr C:

Tower Annex also had a very good Brazilian/Bossa Nova section..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Webhamster Henry:

Well, it ain't the Annex, but the WFMU Record fair is on this weekend, starting today!
Avatar 10:06am annie:

doug, you should do what you have to do.. we will adapt..we'll bring our hankies wth us.. wither goest thou, so go we.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Stanley:

A Glorious Solution!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Jeff Golick:

Ok, then! Thanks to you gentlemen, both, for allowing us to keep our Friday rituals more or less in place, just upsidedown.
Avatar 10:07am annie:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:07am listener james from westwood:

UM, you're an absolute mensch's mensch for being part of this schedule swap. Glad we still have you both!
  10:07am Mr C:

ugh..!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Uncle Michael:

Someday, and that day may never come, I'll call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept this as a gift.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Uncle Michael:

I don't know how to take that, Mr. C. ;-)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:08am doctorjazz:

The hours I spent at Tower and the Tower Annex are just too many to fathom, many many days.

Nisht Azoy Gerfairlach would be the Yiddish response to the schedule change (not so bad...); actually quite fine (from my neck of the woods, nice/great that UM can pull it off).
  10:08am Ramblin' Ray:

Any Drummertime is good! Greetings all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

I thank you and I love you, Michael.
Avatar 10:09am Scraps:

Sweet Jug!
  10:09am Mr C:

@ Mike Can't we be friends..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff Golick:

Jug was one of my very first jazz loves. When I started listening to this music, I really liked the tenor guys: Coleman Hawkins, Ammons, Chu Berry, Ben Webster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Uncle Michael:

Forever, and ever. Mr. C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am melinda:

Digging the Ammons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

There were some great two-fer compilations on...Verve? I think...a great education.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Salted Ammons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Little Danny:

Good morning Doug and all
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am doctorjazz:

I also grew up (in a Jazz sense) on the Twofers...now I'm a bit sorry, left used original issues, Verve, Blue Note for the "better value" twofers, what did I know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Killer lineup on this Ammons wax:

Alto Saxophone – Jackie McLean
Bass – Addison Farmer
Congas – Candido
Drums – Arthur Taylor
Piano – Duke Jordan
Tenor Saxophone – Gene Ammons
Trumpet – Art Farmer

Avatar 10:23am Scraps:

Steve Lacy doing a Monk! Good way to cheer up a morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

I reverse engineered trying to ID that last tune: recognized a Monk theme, then figured it's probably Steve Lacy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

Actually, come to think of it, given his recorded output, as a general rule it's probably Steve Lacy.
Avatar 🥁 10:26am βrian:

Mostly clear blue skies over the isthmus today, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

You dereenigne it, Jeff Golick. Impressive!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug, seems like congrats are in order old bean. What would your folks say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Jeff Golick:

And the percussionist/drummer here on this trio, Barry Altschul, also made a great one for Black Saint's sister label, Soul Note, in the early 1980s.

Ok, shutting up now.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am fred:

Doug, you also have experience improving the lives of WFMU listeners, who don't seem to trend all that young
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Has anyone seen the documentary Alive Inside about the social worker who brings music to dementia patients and accomplishes incredible things? That is what I would like to do. (Or, continue doing!)

Hey hey hey, it's Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I miss the record fair desperately. Haven't been in, gack!, five years.
  11:26am Dean:

@Carmichael: There's a Tower Grill there, too, isn't there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

I am getting shit-all done here today. Excellent soundtrack, though!

::crawls back into own head::
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Uncle Michael:

  11:31am Mr C:

It takes two subway lines to get to the Fair from Manhattan. Just an observation.
Avatar 11:31am Carmichael:

@Dean, yes, the Tower Café is right next door. Like Yogi Berra would say, nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

Driving from Staten Island, expect it to be a real pain, but should be fun there.
Avatar 🥁 11:33am βrian:

It's where Rapunzel can have a drink and let down her hair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Maggie B.:

@doctorjazz - i haven't been to the record fair since they moved it from Manhattan - what's the parking situation in Greenpoint? (and I used to live in SI once upon a time too.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
Just pour yourself a Manhattan and then... you'll get there!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:35am Brian in UK:

Thomas' voice stands out like a beacon in a swamp of mugabe shite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I prefer you to avoid using obscenities here. (The M word.)
Avatar 🥁 11:36am βrian:

Imagine how many subway lines it takes from Topeka!
Avatar 11:38am Carmichael:

It gleams like a golden stream, when all around is dark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Uncle Michael:

Southwest Chief to Chicago, Broadway Limited to Manhattan...
Avatar 🥁 11:39am βrian:

Will Charlie's library gig relate to music, I wonder.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40am listener james from westwood:

Yes!! Cheyenne is a wonder!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Uncle Michael:

It's true. I'm shaking my stick and not making a dent.
  11:43am Mr C:

This Tommy Tate song could fit easily into the Karl Blau repertoire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

That is a wonderful observation, Mr C. That Tommy Tate was a home demo. Stripped down and fine.
  11:46am Mr C:

General Johnson was a tremendous talent...often under the radar..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

Just saw on Twitter that Vito Acconci has died. He contributed a piece to the WFMU benefit art auction back in the early '90s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am doctorjazz:

@Maggie B-I expect parking in Greenpoint (most of Brooklyn, which is where I originally hail from) to be a nightmare, prepared to circle quite a bit.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:48am Brian in UK:

@Carmichael thank you Mr Shaw. It was one of Wildes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Not our radars, Mr C.
  11:49am Mr C:

And Eugene Record! now there's a master craftsman..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

"Smeared" is not the most romantic choice of words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Jeff Golick:

Was just gonna comment to that effect, @Doug.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:51am Brian in UK:

Better than kissing your ganglion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Eugene Booker Record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Better on a bagel.
  11:51am Filip:

Hi Doug! Catching the tail end of your show.... Sad news about Vito Acconci... Another NY icon gone.
Cheers from the mountains....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Oh hey, Filip! Sorry to bear the sad the news. Great to see you.
Avatar 🥁 11:53am βrian:

I can imagine when folks get self-driving cars, they'll just have the car drop them off and then circle until they're ready to be picked up.

Not exactly green ...
  11:53am Dean:

"Smear" is, literally, not Romantic. It's Germanic. First entry in OED is curious: "To anoint with oil, chrism, etc., as a symbolic ceremony. In later use only with contemptuous force."
Avatar 🥁 11:54am βrian:

Those unctuous Teutons.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Brian in UK:

Nice one Doug. What's on the pizza tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am fred:

@βrian: When AI reaches consciousness, it will try to blunt it. So the self-driving cars will just pretend to be circling and actually go hang out in the nearest sleazy joint
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO:

@Brian
Pizza tomorrow night! Sautéed asparagus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO:

Hi there Dean!
  11:58am Dean:

I'm with Atrios when it comes to self-driving cars. They aren't gonna happen. Besides, you just know that after a half-generation or so of them, some wise guy will think, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could navigate these things manually?!"
  11:58am Alex In Illinois:

I've been listening, but have been too busy to post.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO:

Greets, Alex!
Avatar 11:59am Sue P.:

Ricotta Salata & lemon go nicely w/ asparagus on pizza...
Avatar 🥁 11:59am βrian:

We're doing dabs of strained garden tomatoes, chèvre, and oil-cured olives. Fresh basil and crushed red pepper flakes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Brian in UK:

...so does an empty stomach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Stanley:
