Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

As I've just reached Watergate in the Nixon biography, this is doubly thematic as a music year.

@Dean: 90! Many happy tidings to her!

Thanks, @Jeff G. I'll convey your good wishes to her. Of course, she'll reply, "Who?" But at 90, she says that a lot.

Dean:

Thanks, @ljfw. I see the index has an entry for "Whittier, parochialism of." That's priceless. In 1976 I was working at the public library in Whittier, where the community meeting room was called the Nixon Room. One day a supervisor asked me to set up chairs for a screening of a movie. "In the Nixon Room?," I inquired. The supervisor glowered, "It's the multi-purpose room!" Took a while for the bruise of '74 to heal in Whittier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm

Related to the Jr./Sr. point: I had someone calling our current pope Francis I in proofs. Not yet he isn't, not until a future pope also takes the name after the Big Smoke!

Google Ngram Viewer shows references to World War I in ... 1915!
  12:34pm

Just a bump. Wider usage didn't begin the ascent until 1937.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Uncle Michael:

"I'd like you to meet my first wife..."
  12:36pm
Dean:

I suppose it's possible that the early occurrences are false hits, e.g., a generic reference to world war followed by first person singular pronoun.
Avatar 12:36pm
βrian:

But that wasn't a "one." It was a LATIN SMALL LETTER L. So, World War "el." is what they intended, surely.

Oh, bloody el.

World War I

Hye, I have an Elvis album that I think is one of his best called "Rhythm & Country"--I had to Google it cuz mine is in storage. It was recorded in 1973 and released in 1998, says Amazon.

I can sing along but would not have been able to name this artist (King Harvest) if my life was at stake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Pedro G.:

And I'm sorry but I just don't get the new releases on cassette craze. Vinyl? Yes, of course. But cassettes were always crap. OK, I get the irony. Heck, I have quite a collection of 8-tracks sitting around. But cassettes were never fun. More like a necessity in the case of collecting concerts etc.

Alex In Illinois:

Our last CRT TV was on a shelf that I reassembled incorrectly. In the middle of the night, there was a loud jarring crash. Next day, I was hauling it to Best Buy for recycling. And also to buy its much lighter replacement.

I try to avoid it as much as possible but a lot of current pop vocals sound somewhat synthesized, in an annoying way. I don't understand the technology behind it but I sort of hate it. Not the same as straight-on robot voice from the early 80s.
