Thanks Adam, and hello! Yep, it's a real obscurity.

p.s. I was outbid today on Nathan Abshire's "Pine Grove Blues" 78.

Not a very interesting story I'm afraid

hi folks

That 78 was pretty rinked anyhow, wasn't it? Your day will come. I need to upgrade too. Oklahoma Tornado pressings, so unpredictable.

I have come to love the accordion in all contexts, including jazz. Took me a while tho

i'd be interested in learning about (and listening to) accordion jazz.

i may've liked the accordion in exceptional cases in many styles of music, (not polka!) - but i especially like it in good flamenco; and in Yann Tiersen's (?) soundtrack to amalie - at least...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
melinda:

That Barrier Brothers number was great. Sometimes I forget how wonderful banjo can sound. I used to listen to more bluegrass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
melinda:

@coelecanth that might be my favorite context for accordion as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Doug Schulkind:

Sacre bleu! Good evening fellow flameurs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
coelacanth∅:

mm, i love the banjo as well - maybe in all contexts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Little Danny:

I totally agree Melinda. Much bluegrass starts sounding pretty same-y quickly. But the best stuff - the high, lonesome sound - is transcendent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
melinda:

I think I like most banjo contexts, too, with the exception of Shakey's-style. I forget what it's really called.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Little Danny:

Doug! Always so honored to have you here. I know your time is rigorously scheduled over the next 12 hours or so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm not familiar with shakey... but i especially like when it is picked, but not a speed contest. (ie some Neil Young or Gillian Welsh...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
melinda:

Shakey's was a themed pizza chain, my memory is fuzzy but I think dorky music was involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
coelacanth∅:

[or "i believe" on r.e.m.'s album "life's rich pageant"]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth∅:

hey, i just realised that song, "i believe", has both banjo AND accordion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
melinda:

'night everyone. Time to turn in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Little Danny:

Ha, I thought you were talkin' about Neil Young re: "Shakey." A themed pizza chain is way funnier
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth∅:

g'night melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Little Danny:

And goodnight! I'm not taking you out on a very mellow musical note it seems
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
melinda:

that's ok!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
coelacanth∅:

LD i was thinking of "for the turnstiles" by N Young; though i know he did other good songs early on with a slow-picked banjo.
{were we talking about Neil Young recently?}
- i never heard of that pizza chain!
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
JtotheK:

there was a shakey's around here ... a few decades ago. i remember it being buffet style...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Little Danny:

We were indeed! I've been wading thru some of the favorites from the Neil Young discussion. Still coming to terms with his vast discography in general
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Little Danny:

OMG buffet-style pizza. Been there. In Texas it's CiCi's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

buffet-style? ...are you yankin' my pizza chain?!
  11:35pm
MrFab:

Shakey's is cardboard crap pizza, yet theyve been in business for ages and are inexplicably still around. Pizza parlors used to have this old-timey Dixieland theme, e.g. Straw Hat Pizza. Which is odd since pizza didn't become popular tll after Italian immigration started having an impact. Pretty sure Satchmo and Kid Ory weren't munching on pepperoni pies back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
coelacanth∅:

okay. i just want to say then - explore his 80s catalogue at your own risk. you've been warned!
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
JtotheK:

internet research found this about shakey's: Shakey personally played dixieland jazz piano to entertain patrons and hired the original members of the Silver Dollar Jazz Band for $10 per person plus all the beer and pizza they wanted—he soon realized it was cheaper to pay the musicians scale—this brought the music of Lu Watters to the Sacramento area and caused a local sensation. Jazz historian K. O. Eckland gives this band the credit for the jazz revival in Sacramento ...
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
JtotheK:

@Little Danny - future themed show idea -- jazz artists that crossed over to the pizza parlor scene...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Dano59:

can't believe how late in the game it is. just got in from a DJ night at a bowling alley. it's always good to be here anyway, anticipating the full archived schmeer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Little Danny:

This pizza chain discussion pleases me greatly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Dano59:

Danny - I will go against all the doubters and say dive right into Neil's 80s genre-hopping work with relish, and in order. I got into him big in 1980. A great time to be alive and following him in real time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Little Danny:

Hi Dano59, how did the gig go? It sounds amazing - you had me at bowling alley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Little Danny:

Oh man Jason, that's one of those challenges that I love to take head on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Dano59:

playing live music or DJing there is a total blast. You can get away with a lot, and these guys did tonight. Crew from the local vinyl store, 30 minute sets, 3 hours total. ev from EDM to Petula Clark.
I do a full 3 hours next week. So I'll get here even later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Little Danny:

Fact: I have only one pizza-related MP3 in my library. Roosevelt Grier's "Pizza Pie Man"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Dano59:

oh you must have 'That's Amore' somewhere...
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
JtotheK:

I don't know that Roosevelt Grier track...but now feel like I must get familiar. (And add that to the Grier 45 want list, along with "In My Tenement".)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Little Danny:

Oy, even I can't hang with "That's Amore"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Little Danny:

It's really good Jason! Tho now I need to look up "In My Tenement."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Dano59:

Dean Martin was Dad's fave and a cultural imperative in our house. and Chubby Checker. Mom liked Roger Whittaker.

MrFab:

Lois Prima "Angelina" is great pizza-core.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
JtotheK:

Pizza-Core. Perfect!
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
JtotheK:

@Dan - the other really great "In My Tenement" is by Jackie Shane on Sue. I found that 45 in a 50-cent bin because it was cracked - but it played! I even got to play it out a few times...and then the crack started to make me nervous for the needles. The 45 in recent years has seemed to go up in value, don't think I'll be finding again in the cheapie bins anytime soon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Dano59:

Banjo trivia - Graham Parker did a reggae-ish B-side instrumental featuring banjo. 'No More Excuses (version)'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
Dano59:

Now I need to go find the Neil Young discussion. A previous playlist/comments?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
Little Danny:

@Dano59: astounding re: Graham Parker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Little Danny:

Yeah, Dano, it was last week or the week before when I played Buffalo Springfield
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Little Danny:

Thanks for the tips Jason, I have some work to do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
Dano59:

it's a curio for sure. But still very much the GP/Rumour sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth∅:

haha, my warning isn't based on my own opinion, but the general consensus; though the 80s did spawn his worst albums, it also had some very good, if not excellent songs.
i just thought someone who's just being exposed to Neil Young should start with the small mountain of Extraordinary material of the first decade or so of his career.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
JtotheK:

enjoyed the show Dan -- thanks for the tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am
Dano59:

Coel -- yes it was atypical enough to get sued over by Geffen, but as Neil said, 'that was better than a Grammy'.
I actually think Hawks is a lot like Star'n'Bars; Re-Ac-Tor is the most stupid fun rock n roll record in existence; Everybody's Rockin' is charming;etc. etc. Old Ways is beautifully recorded (digitally - a first back in '85)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am
coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny! have a great week!

tchau, camaradas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am
coelacanth∅:

Dano, i do not agree on all points! -but re-ac-tor was pretty damn good, and trans gets dissed way too much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am
Dano59:

Trans has some great non-techno content too. I've played a lot of Neil songs (leaning to the mostly obscure) with other obsessive Neil fans and the MOST fun one to play in an ensemble is Surfer Joe & Moe the Sleaze!
Thanks for commiserating - see y'all late next Thu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am
Little Danny:

Thanks Dano & Coel!
