  9:20am Lore:

Doug: I realize that I point out the coincidences between my life & your programming all the time, but…just last night I was going through records to sell at the FMU fair & I pulled out the Jumping on the Hill LP on Policy Wheel. I thought, there’s no way I can sell this, it has “Squinch Owl Moan!”
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:20am listener james from westwood:

Doug, apologies if this has been asked/answered here on prev. playlists, but will you be in Jersey City for any part of the Marathon?

Not familiar with Catherine Irwin, but she has one of those voices that gets under your skin (in a good way). A bit like Iris Dement (in feel, not so much that I'd confuse them).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Brand new one from Alasdair Roberts, coming up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
I know of one dog in England that does not like Iris DeMent's voice. I disagree with that pup. Catherine Irwin is one half of the duo Freakwater, with Janet Bean.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:14am doctorjazz:

I've heard of Freakwater, though also haven't heard them (so much music, so little time...). More stuff to check out.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Maggie B.:

Bill willl be bringing barbecue stuff and I will make something (to be determined!) but I won't actually be there because I'm trying to conserve my days off from work. So you won't be coming to JC this year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Nawp. I have four papers to write in the next month or so. Kinda freaking out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Maggie B.:

I forgot you are back in school! don't freak out, you'll do great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

Freaking out is, apparently, part of my "process."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Dave in Vermont:

Freaking out is part of my process too. I know it isn't a good approach or helpful but I keep doing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Maggie B.:

if it works in the end, let your freakout flag fly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Jeff Golick:

What is a "Tettet," other than a palindrome?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

@Dave in Vermont
The best part about the freakout is the chocolate chip cookie bingeing. Because chocolate chip cookies.

@Jeff Golick
I hope you didn't find the tettet offensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am David D:

Good day, Doug and all!

The Tettet is definitely music to freak out by - don't know if I could write a paper to it, though. The name of the track is inventive as well.
Avatar 10:46am Flash Strap:

when I went back to grad school, i had to basically cobble together a BFA in art history on my own over the summer just before. Ended up having to write 64 essays in 4 months, in addition to starting school

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Stanley:

Freak Out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

I can't write (or read, for that matter) to music. Who am I kidding? I can barely breathe to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Little Danny:

Wow this Surman is so great! Doug you are pretty much singlehandedly leading my education in British and European avantgarde jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Good afternoon, David D!

@Flash Strap
64 essays in 4 months made my brain throw up in its mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Little Danny:

Avatar 10:57am Flash Strap:

I can basically only write to Debussy, Satie, and field recordings of rain and water... any other kind of work, if there's not music playing I languish! I anguish!

yeah 64 doesn't even sound true. I couldn't believe it when I realized what I had coming. I went through all the stages of grief. and that was just the prologue to getting a masters, which required a lotta scribblin as well
Avatar 10:59am Scraps:

(I'd been listening, lying down.)

(Can't write lying down -- one working hand, it's complicated.)
Avatar 10:59am Flash Strap:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:03am Brian in UK:

Is listening to music on the radio different to listening on your own system at home? What I mean is the perception different because you did not choose it and also the surprise of the unknown.
Avatar 11:08am Scraps:

Basically, yes. But often, not much. (Sometimes, are.)
Avatar 11:11am Scraps:

(I do listen nearly always at random, when not listening to FMU. "At random" meaning song by song at random.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:12am doctorjazz:

Much of the time at home I'm listening to music I don't know (as I wind up listening to stuff I've purchased after hearing it here or reading about it). So, not really.
I do need to have some music playing, may not be able to really focus if I'm doing something else, but still need it around. I go nuts if it's not playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

If I ever seen an algorithm trying to feed me my musical preferences, I'm gonna punch it in the mouth.
Avatar 11:14am Scraps:

The only time I listen programmatically is when I purchase and want to know what I listen to. Otherwise, randomly.

You are speaking of the amazing Record Mart store. It was in the Times Square subway stop complex. You actually had to pay a token (back when they still had subway tokens) to get in the subway in order get tot he store. I probably purchase 200 salsa records at that place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 11:44am Flash Strap:

good point Scraps, though I think the pleasure we try to get from music is less about being comfortable than discovering the ecstatic, sublime, or being awakened to/shown something, that sort of thing. in that way, even "comfort" music does something far more complex to you than a pacification or numbing effect

Just want to take a moment to thank the Drummer stream for being a gateway drug. After Bodega Pop the other night, a Dickie Wells track came on but was interrupted for me. I went to find it on the YouTubes, and listened quite happily for a while to the autoplay series they fed me of Dickie and others.
