re: business strategy
The ol' Pareto Principle usually always applies -- 80% of your revenue comes from the 20% of your customers. In regard to customer relationships, most business ended up taking all their cues from the airline industry and their frequent-flyer programs.

To be fair, “The Martian” does not fall into that category. So hey.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My advice to Hollywood - esp. the SciFi makers: Take some of that $400mil - & hire *one* good starving Writer. Even truly great Directors too often lack a decent Writer. SciFi became ActionAdventure - a vaild Genre of its' own - but not about Ideas. It's Cops & Guns & ArmyRecruitment Ads in Space. Since there's now literally more FutureShock in one's plam device than one can comprehend - & the streets & industries have indeed become a survival epic - perhaps this is understandable...
I adopted the term 'GuitarPop' for when the drummer is maybe not hyped enuff to call it 'PowerPop' ?...

Thanks. Two years ago, I found on line and tracked down a sax player who had busked with Jimi in Boston and/or NYC. They split up because the sax guy had a family and didn't want to go out of town with Jimi. In the interim, said sax player had addiction and spent time in jail. Now, a survivor, he plays small gigs around NYC. Saw him in a small dive in NJ, where he played along to tracks, with his wife running the equipment. He had great sound and facility - one could see why he and Jimi played together.

Clarke:

Cheap Trick should at least be in the discussion, I think.

@FrankAbove: What? Of what point in their discography you can forget them?

Frank - did you watch that Live At Drylls House?

JakeGould:

@MichaelShelley: To be fair, I’ve seen a lot of bad plastic surgery on people who want to defy age and Joan Jett seems like she’s just overly made-up and not overly cut-up.

Jake: Are we still talking Ramones or Cheap Trick?

DG:

Los Lobos are definitely one of the great America bands. Saw them live many times; their version of "Crossroads" will make you think you're listneing to Cream. Then they'll do a traditional norteno, then a moody, slower piece, then a blues. Versatile & still great. (You listening, Hall of Fame?)

@FrankAbove: Cheap Trick. I think? Did Bun E. Carlos get a facelift?

Michael: Actually, it doesn't matter. I haven's seen any Daryl's House performances in a bit.

What wigs me out is when people get the facelift & they all look the same - & not like themselves. Then - I suppose if it's successful, we might not even notice...

Jake: The first 5 albums are essential. After that it gets spotty. But I think they're in the conversation due to their longevity.

And yeah, the latter Ramones albums aren't as good, but they actually branched out beyond the 3-chord short songs, sometimes successfully. Case in point: "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" is great (as is much of "Animal Boy"), "Halfway to Sanity" too. Don't know that much after that, but the covers album ("Acid Eaters") is certainly not as good as it could have been.

Jake: To clarify, I put "Budokan" in the 5 essential list. In fact, it might be their most significant, because the true spirit of Cheap Trick is captured in their live performances. I don't think the studio recordings quite do them justice.

Quoth Someone: Having seen how much you can take out & still be Rawk'n'Roll - TheRamones now see how much you can put back in & still be TheRamones.

i would say that Cheap Trick has made more consistent product than any other and stayed more true to their original sound than any other - aside from Beach Boys. speaking of demo's - anyone heard any of the Red Ant Demos from Cheap Trick?!? wow.

Regarding "Move Over and Let Me Dance (pt 1)," Michael, how did you get the guitar so out in front in the mix like that? All I could find on Youtube, the 45s, were versions with Jimi buried so back you could barely hear his playing. Never heard that song before, so a thank-you.
