Favoriting January 31, 2017: Music of NFL Films Pt. II (Super Bowl LI Special)
Morricone Island host Devon E. Levins absolutely abhors football...but that doesn't mean he can't get excited about Super Bowl Sunday! It's another poor excuse to spin his favorite NFL Films Music Library records. Anyone who grew up in the late 60's, 70s or 80s with family members blasting the NFL Films highlights or NFL Game of the Week from the tv in the other room will fondly remember the music of synth pioneer Sam Spence or KPM library composers Johnny Pearson, Syd Dale and Keith Mansfield. For many, the music is etched into their brains. Nobody knew the names of the songs nor the composers but they surely recognized the music...and to the uninitiated, it surprisingly sounds exactly like any other episode of Morricone Island.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I think the Ren and Stimpy theme cribbed this one, somewhat.

Hah! You said "Giants" instead of Jets!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

i love how this stuff takes on homeric importance. when it's just guys getting concussions.

Dale - That's actually Dan Bodah!!

While listening to this, I'm looking at this 2012 No. Reading (Mass.) HS varsity football offense highlights reel, and it fit very well:

It's all instrumentals! Aren't there any lyrics about the bravely concussed sweaty large men and their oval ball?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm

my friend geoff worked for nfl films in the early 2000's. where is that guy?
Avatar 7:33pm
Linda Lee:

i love this stuff. don't care for football, but i love the music.

Mr Teefers in Hbg PA:

A ton of NFL Films songs can be found on Youtube posted by a guy named Dave Volsky - must be like 400 of them..
Avatar 7:34pm
Devon E. Levins:

We must find Martha Jane Weber the composer of this track and get her in to talk NFL Films Music with us. If the internet can be believed, and there isn't more than one MJW, she is a real estate agent now in Princeton, NJ. Local!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
dale:

baseball never earned this much musical cred. or bowling. maybe the olympics, but they only have one song. darts could just be the boss and stones.
Avatar 7:36pm
Linda Lee:

should be easy enough to find out if she's the composer!
  7:37pm
Mike:

Cool themed show!
Avatar 7:39pm
Linda Lee:

i'd love to find out how one lands a gig composing for the nfl!
Avatar 7:41pm
Linda Lee:

that looks like an early 80s vinyl graphic for MJW. if she was composing then she's a fairly elderly real estate agent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Cool music, for sure, but in my mind, I'm waiting for the narrator's deep voice to start hyping the Oakland Raiders.

pet shop boys did work for the nfl?

I tried to get Pet Shop Boys on a few months ago on their last tour to discuss their Battleship Potemkin rescore. Schedule too tight.

exactly!!! running into a few other 300 pound men ..
Avatar 7:56pm
Linda Lee:

'Honchos' sounds like porn. have we ever done a porn soundtrack show?
  7:56pm
Mr Teefers in Hbg PA:

The reference to Elliot Blair Orchestra could be tongue in cheek tip of the hat to NFL Films original name of Blair Studios.. named after Ed Sabol's daughter Blair
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
melinda:

@Linda: I don't like football either but this music is great.
Avatar 7:59pm
Linda Lee:

why do i love this music so? can't figure it out :-D
Avatar 8:00pm
Linda Lee:

misread the list .. it's 'slo moshun' that sounds like porn :-D

B17_Bomber:

Martha Jane Weber is an alias, I had the pleasure of talking with former NFL films music director, Phillip Speiller, and he confirmed that Weber was an alias, although he couldn't remember the composer's real name... a mystery I hope to solve one day.
