Rod Keith's son, the saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, once played live on my show.
Avatar 7:38pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

That's so cool Doug :D
Avatar 7:38pm
Scraps:

I have five or seven albums he played on
Avatar 7:40pm
Scraps:

But having a show he played on is much more neato
  7:41pm
Dean:

Would *love* to hear that, Doug. I attended one of Eskelin's shows at a club in LA. Sat next to a young lady 9 or 10 years old: Eskelin's niece! "I'm here to see my uncle."
  7:43pm
Doug Schulkind:

I have a cassette recording of the show in a box somewhere. That was (gulp) maybe 25 years ago. GULP.
  7:46pm
Dean:

Pretty sure the show I saw was the one listed here under June 10-21: http://www.gerryhemingway.com/quartet98.html It was Hemingway's group, with Ray Anderson and Mark Dresser.
Avatar 7:47pm
Scraps:

Eskelin led bands on at least two Hat Hut albums. That's impressive, to me at least. I never saw him, even though I was there in New York and I knew that I should. Oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Doug Schulkind:

Eskelin wrote an article for WFMU's program guide, LCD (Lowest Common Denominator), in which he tells the story of discovering Rod Keith was his father. Here it is: wfmu.org...
  7:49pm
Dean:

A lot of Eskelin on hat, and assorted other labels. He's one of those prolific artists with whom I can't afford to keep up. Love his stuff with Jim Black.

Yay Lyres for us NewEnglanders.
