For the last 15 years or so, it's been more like, we now have the power and storage to throw lots of data at a self organizing network, and that's how machine learning and modeling will proceed. These processes are only getting faster, and I think Kurzweil is right in stating that this is an exponential process, not a linear one. Do not be fooled by the small amount of "progress" in AI - the principles its based on now are more like what happens biologically.
