Hey drummers! Out of town, not sure I'll get to listen in real time. Staying at a friends house in Philadelphia, went to see Nels Cline, Marshall Allen, Gerald Cleaver @ Johnny Brenda's.last night, fun, loud skronking affair. They'll be back Sunday night with guest Marshall Allen for anyone in the area.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Maggie B.:

aw, Doug! Love you and all the drummers right back. And it was cathartic to share layoff stories last week. thanks.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:30am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug.

@Goyim the depressing thing about the elections in Austria last week was the fact that the reports said who had lost before saying who had won.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Goyim in the AM:

@Brian -- for me, the most depressing thins is that the far right candidate was ultimately stopped by the mainstream conservative party and its voters actually pulling themselves together and voting with some respect for the rest of the world -- that's depressing because that ain't happening in the US or the UK any time soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Goyim in the AM:

Also it's not a coincidence that Merkel suddenly came on with the "tough on Islamic immigration" hoo-ha immediately thereafter -- the German conservatives have misread the Van der Bellen victory as a sign that the Austrian mainstream parties' godawful triangulation on that stuff helped defeat the bad guys -- and I think that's a bad mistake.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:35am Brian in UK:

Goyim, they do have the benefit of hindsight to a small extent. If the vote to leave the EU was taken again over here, my guess it would be to leave.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am guy mauve:

That is after it is steamed. Mash it up and cheese it down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

My policy is to put on the playlist the name of the artist as it appears on the record. A flawed policy, perhaps, but it provides order in my mind.

@Webhamster Henry
I believe Mr. Brubeck passed a while ago. 2012. But we mourn him still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Webhamster Henry:

Cheesy shrimp. Yum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Has there ever been a bad time with bongos?
Avatar 🥁 10:00am βrian:

On the other hand, that's more for the rest of us. Pity the caper pickers. Whoever thought to pick and pickle those little flower buds was truly inspired. Or truly, hungry, maybe.
Avatar 10:00am chromaphone:

I helped interview a shrimper who worked in the FL panhandle a few months before the BP oil spill and he said it was a crime that most Americans unknowingly only eat imported shrimp because our native shrimp tastes so incredible. Sadly I don't think I had any while I was down there but the crabcakes were through the roof good as I recall.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:02am Brian in UK:

I had a craving for laver bread yesterday. The only place here that I can find it is in Swansea Market.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Dave in Vermont:

I was feeling like better human while listening to that song, for sure, Doug.
  10:07am Listener Gregory:

To be fair to Tom Dorsey, when he got religion, I believe he stopped performing "Second Hand Woman Blues" and the like.
  10:08am Listener Gregory:

I came in in the middle of that shrimp set, and now I almost wish the show were over so I could listen to it in the archive! Almost.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Same guy, Alex. The Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey was "Georgia Tom."
  10:15am Listener Gregory:

@Alex in IL. They could well be the same person. Blues record labels (and their re-issuers) were not the most fastidious people in the world when it came to names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Little Danny:

G'morning Doug and all from a foggy desert
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:17am Brian in UK:

Talking bluegrass, saw Bobby Gillespie at a Ralph Stanley gig. I know why not, just never noticed any bluegrass influences in Primal Screams' music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex
Tommy Dorsey was a different person.
  10:17am Listener Gregory:

Since no one asked, let me also reveal that the blues pianists Speckled Red and Piano Red were brothers, but their last names were not Red.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Alex In Illinois:

But "Tommy" Dorsey was Thomas Francis Dorsey, the trombonist and "Thomas" Dorsey was Thomas Andrew Dorsey the Gospel composer.

@Dean I was at the Wigmore Hall last week. Not saying this to annoy you, just saying.

Glenn, what you have to understand is that the GOP is calling on us to put all that aside ("Get over it!") and support the president for the sake of unity. You know, just like they did for eight years.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Alex In Illinois:

@glenn: what do you mean by "watch"? What actions do you expect us to do? A professor has started a site dedicated to fighting the "fake news" sites, and finally mainstream news is waking up to the existence of fake news sites and beginning to comprehend the idea that maybe truth is more important than "balance". Organizations that oppose what Republicans stand for are receiving record amounts in donations. Here in Illinois, we just passed a environmental legislation to fight Global Warming.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Fake news has been around for ages in the US. Except in the 1960s, for instance, it was the government producing the propaganda. Remember COINTELPRO? Now it is us, the American People, who are fooling ourselves. Aldous Huxley anticipated this, no.
  11:41am Dean:

The USG has since its founding been operated by high school bullies, nerds, self-righteous ideologues, jocks, and other misfits. There is no solution. It will always be so. We "the people" have to tend to our own critical faculties and our own demands if we want our government to instill pride. The gov't isn't there to do it for us. Respecting fake news, the solutions are simple: learn to think and read at the same time, exercise high degrees of skepticism (and curiosity!) on the one hand while acknowledging, on the other hand, that some kinds of evidence are superior to others.
  11:41am Dean:

Put another way, fuck leadership. Level that fucking hierarchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

The Pizzagate thing is frightening as hell, but it's a freak side show, a wart on a body that now has late-stage cancer growing within. The fact that the US election was likely (certainly?) affected by a foreign power doesn't seem to be leading the news cycle, for example. The only thing I can take solace in now is the fact that millions more voted for the other candidate.

Thinking, reading, @Dean? That's not really Americans' strong suit right there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am Brian Brothers in UK:

The OED word(s) of the year is post-truth.
The concept of post-truth has been in existence for the past decade, but Oxford Dictionaries has seen a spike in frequency this year in the context of the EU referendum in the United Kingdom and the presidential election in the United States. It has also become associated with a particular noun, in the phrase post-truth politics.

Post-truth has gone from being a peripheral term to being a mainstay in political commentary, now often being used by major publications without the need for clarification or definition in their headlines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Alex In Illinois:

@Dean: agreed, but doesn't the list "high school bullies, nerds, self-righteous ideologues, jocks, and other misfits" include just about everyone? Okay, maybe not hipsters and fashionistas. Frankly, I think nerds are way too under-represented.
