I got laid of on March 29, 2009. Right in the middle of the WFMU Marathon. I came right from the station to my job and no one was in their offices. I crept around the floor until I discovered everyone was in the conference room getting sacked.

A family member works for a tech company where the layoff ax has swung big on several occasions, and it's terrible to hear of the people getting physically stressed and sick, so wound with fear, when it comes down to the actual days of decision and notices.

I was in the fourth of several waves of layoffs at my last full-time company 2007–2008. For one of them, they nuked the entire art department except 2 people, 1 of whom had to learn to do half the defunct department's work. He had a panic attack and lost consciousness during said training.
In another case, they had 2 meetings simultaneously: 1 for the people in a dept who were being laid off, 1 for those being kept to distract/detain them while the other half was being escorted out of the bldg.
In sum: never work for a company owned by/in hock to private equity or hedge funds. Interning for Dracula is safer.
