very upset!

Maybe "post-metal" means you mostly can understand the vocals

Mark R:

Good morning, Scraps!

i'm surprised it wasn't me you had a conversation with about steppenwolf! (er, or was it...)
-i wish i could stay up for more but i just got all the crap dealt with that's kept a sick person awake too late already.
  3:20am
Mark R:

It might very well have been, Coel--I'd have to go back and look at the old playlist! Sorry to hear you're not feeling well--(or is it a loved one?). Maybe you can listen later in the archives!
Avatar 3:21am
Scraps:

sorry, coel.... bummer

coelacanth:

no it's me - and Thank you. it's just bronchial infection with a constant throat tickle and sniffles.
...working in the cold, not sleeping much and eating too much cake might do that to a person.

Mornin' Mark R.!

Weston is playing at Lincoln Center? He's 90!

Man oh man, I wish I still lived in New York

i'll def come back to the archive. -and Thanks Scraps.

Love this. I don't have this, but i got several Max Roach 1980s LPs, and they had Randy Weston on em. I think....
  3:37am
Mark R:

And yes, a quick search reveals that was in fact Coelacanth with whom I had the intellectual exploration of the merits of Steppenwolf.

"Spirits of Our Ancestors" was recorded after Randy had lived in Morocco for several years. The original intent was to record the album in Morocco, but then the Gulf War (the first one) made that impossible, so they returned to New York. It also marks the return of arranger Melba Liston, who had suffered a stroke in the 1980s. It's a two-disc set, and it's all beautiful, a true masterpiece.
Avatar 3:42am
Scraps:

I have to track it down. Antilles albums are sometimes hard, if it's out of print
Avatar 3:45am
Scraps:

But the Cherry i have. So, so awesomely awesome.
  3:47am
Mark R:

"Complete Communion" is a desert island disc for me for sure. Looks like "Spirits of Our Ancestors" is available used or as a digital download, which is better than nothing.
Avatar 3:49am
Scraps:

Oh, that's fine, for me. Great.
  3:49am
Mark R:

Support your local record emporium if you can. Surely Seattle has some hip used disc stores.
Avatar 3:54am
Scraps:

Some.

But. (Stop me if I get too personal.) I'm out in the boonies. I'm disabled, and poor. (Stroke, my right side is paralyzed.) Mostly, I take what I can get.
  3:55am
Mark R:

Well, then, a digital download might be just what the doctor ordered (pun most definitely intended).
Avatar 3:58am
Scraps:

Though i still like to go and hit the record stores, if i can. Nostalgia, if anything else

But boy, i miss e. 8th east village.

Sing-a-Long with Mitch (Miller) recordings sound more normal when played at 45rpm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13am

...and the Monster Mash 45 is vastly improved when played at 33 1/3!

Morning, Dan, Guido, Joeray, et al. Thanks for joining me!
Avatar 4:36am
dan in wisconsin:

Thanks for the Lizzy, Mark! And sorry for the harsh segway. It's been a rainy, mild night in western Wisconsin.
  4:37am
Mark R:

I take responsibility for all segues. I think you and I are the only ones who even noticed, anyway...
Avatar 4:37am

Joan Armatrading self-titled album is one of my desert albums discs
Avatar 4:38am
dan in wisconsin:

Some Eric Dolphy may have been the more appropriate choice, I feel. Something off of "Out There".
Avatar 4:39am

produced by Glyn Johns, immaculately
  4:40am
Mark R:

Love that album--very overlooked. Love that he has a bass AND a cello on it. However, that's going to have to wait for another show--maybe next week!
Avatar 4:45am

Henry Threadgill has several albums with Fred Hopkins (bass) and Deidre Murray (cello). Threadgill Threadgill Threadgill!

His new album's a monster btw. I should play that on a show in the near future.

Yeah!

That one has cello and tuba!
Avatar 4:54am

And his Very Very Circus -- which I saw several times -- had two tubas!

etc!

You've all gone so quiet. It's that time of night when the night owls start to fade and the early birds aren't up yet.
Avatar 5:11am

I'm very awake still, but I'm maybe talking too much.
Avatar 5:12am

Nah, keep talking Scraps. I wasn't aware that Glyn Johns had produced the Clash. Did a quick search and found that out...
Avatar 5:13am

The clash?? I was talking Joan Armatrading....
  5:14am

There's a cool video out there where he shows you how to mic drums

Neat!

Avatar 5:18am

Now this is tree watering music.
  5:21am

I'll take that as a compliment.

Yes, always take them where you can.

Pi Recordings is..... Henry Threadgill's label.

;-)
  5:28am
Mark R:

Well there ya go--they're into progressive sounds, obviously.
Avatar 5:33am
Scraps:

Oh yeah -- Steve Coleman, Muhal Richard Abrams, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer, etc
  5:38am
?:

Do you own this disk? I love it.
Avatar 5:39am
dan in wisconsin:

Now that literally just felt like an ocean (including seagulls) opening up into my living room. Killer segway....
  5:41am
Mark R:

I do own it (on vinyl), and I see that it's gone out of print and they're asking outrageous prices for it online. I don't even see it as a digital download. That sucks. Sometimes you can find albums like this at your local library if you're lucky.
  5:48am
?:

You should convert it to a disk.
  5:49am
?:

It's too early in the morning to have to keep doing these math equations to post!!
  5:50am
Mark R:

That's not a bad idea, ?...I have a few vinyls I need to do that with.
Avatar 5:58am
dan in wisconsin:

Not bad for a 400 + year old track....
Avatar 5:59am

Great show this morning, Mark. Thank you!
