Heya Gary and every one!

Howdy, Bob!
Avatar 7:04pm

I was really surprised particularly given how the after polls seemed to be shaping up
  7:05pm
Dean:

Surprised, but not head-spinningly so. Mr. Greenwald gets to the crux of the matter. I've been reading him for years, which prepares one for counter-media-intuitive phenomena like this. Also, recall Rep. Ellison's Sunday talk show appearance in July 2015. He called it then. The pundits laughed.
Avatar 7:06pm

oh, damn. was there an election yesterday?!?!?!
  7:06pm

I actually have this friggin' album, albeit sans brown paper wrapper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm

Hey Dean! Yes, and Michael Moore's prediction as well, I guess
Avatar 7:06pm

I realized a little after 8 when Florida was undecided - and turnout in Hillary areas was not what was expected

How many think Bernie would've won it?

@Dean - I sure remember Ellison's appearance - I intensely dislike Moore and Greenwald tho

Awww, hey there, Sean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm

Hi Gary. I think Bernie wouldn't have had much chance. "Communist" (regardless of whether or not he actually is), plus Jewish atheist vs a guy running a practically naked anti-Semitic campaign.

I was feeling nervous about the outcome for a few days prior.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Gary:

I admit I didn't feel as secure about it as I did 2008 & 2012
Avatar 7:15pm
ndbob:

@melinda I was a little uncomfortable for sure
  7:16pm
Dean:

I regret that Greenwald so viscerally turns people off. To my mind, he is among the most astute and incisive commentators. I'm less familiar with Moore, but that's because I'm not interested in film. Re: DJT as anti-Semite, see this remark by Brian Leiter: "Trump himself is a racist (more a casual racist, than an ideologically committed one), but he is not an anti-semite. But he has certainly emboldened the anti-semites, as well as the racists."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Polyus:

Same here, I had a bad vibe early in the evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
coelacanth:

wow, even via laptop speakers the stereo separation is making me dizzy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
melinda:

I think Bernie might have won, but not in the landslide some predicted. The Socialist Jewish atheist thing could definitely have worked against him. But the younger generation who was fired up by him generally doesn't think about the Cold War baggage associated with the term 'socialism'.
Avatar 7:18pm
ndbob:

I just find Greenwald smug - and wrong mostly - and right Trump isn't an antisemite but he emboldens antiSemitism
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Gary:

It makes no sense to me that people are freaked out about socialism. But, then, I was a wee lad during the cold war
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
coelacanth:

i live in a bit of a bubble. most folks were sure hillary would win and scoffed when i said dump probably would.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Gary:

I mean, what are people afraid other people are going to steal from them ... their crippling debt?
Avatar 7:20pm
ndbob:

@Gary because it's unfairly associated wiht Communism - and many see it as too restrictive of liberty
Avatar 7:21pm
ndbob:

I think socialism is good in areas like healthcare not good in other areas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
melinda:

@Bob: I agree that Trump isn't necessarily the anti-semite/racist he seems to be, but if he's willing to play the part, that's just as bad. If he starts sounding a different tune once in office that would be great, but I'm not counting on it.
Avatar 7:23pm
hyde:

@Dean i often like Greenwald's analysis and i think the Intercept in general is really good. but i am much less fond of Greenwaldian hyperbole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gary:

The artist we're hearing now, Yang Fan, did the drawing to your left
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
melinda:

I think Greenwald is a mixed bag.
Avatar 7:25pm
ndbob:

right Melinda - what I worry about is that if some of his poor economic ideas are implemented he will say something like "You know who's responsible folks"
Avatar 7:26pm
ndbob:

when they fail
  7:26pm
Dean:

Trump's electorate do not predominantly suffer from crippling debt. He fashioned his populism out of the myth that they do.

I kind of get the "smug" characterization, but not fully. He is an activist attorney, and one trait attorneys acquire is a modicum of smugness. But wrong? Greenwald is one of the few journalists/pundits who actually marshals evidence for his argument, again a feature of being an attorney.

Hyperbole, too, is essential to an attorney's rhetorical kit. Still, I don't read much of Greenwald as hyperbolic. I don't always agree with him--he reluctantly supported the outcome of Citizens United, for instance--but his tone to me sounds more sarcastic. Then again, I'm mixing his tweets with his more fleshed out articles.
Avatar 7:26pm
hyde:

@melinda Greenwald has a frothing at the mouth tendency that can be hard to take
Avatar 7:28pm
northguineahills:

Thanks, I was going to ask who did the art.
Avatar 7:28pm
ndbob:

maybe it's just that my perspective is really different than Greenwald's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Gary:

NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
melinda:

I would have to read more Greenwald to develop a fuller picture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Gary:

Title of piece (or series?) is "Bed Trip" -- so quite apropos!
Avatar 7:30pm
northguineahills:

Everyone down here in Trumpville was sure he was going to lose, but by last night everyone was smug. (while we're trending on that word)
Avatar 7:31pm
hyde:

@Dean fair, and we can agree to disagree about hyperbolic. i just personally find his tendency to go pretty over the top with his longform writing to be fairly offputting, even when i agree with him is all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Parq:

Why, is Waits really aggressive about take-downs for covers of his stuff?
  7:34pm
Dean:

Damn, I had ER's first two LPs back in the '80s. Probably paid a buck a piece. Unloaded them, along with a shit-ton of other good rock and pop, during a purge in the late '80s. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm

I had planned on avoiding all election coverage Tuesday night, but of course that didn't happen.

Hi Flash! We're all 'processing' the election results.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Parq:

As for the election, I've lived through this with Reagan (twice), I lived through this with Bush Senior, and I lived through it with Bush Jr (also twice). I'm just numb at this point. What could I possibly have left to say? What, other than a dull sense of hopeless disaffection, could I possibly have left to feel?

Hey Gary. What a f***ed up world we live in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Gary:

Mom! I (obviously) thought of you last night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Parq:

Melinda, yes, I know what you mean, but honestly, Reagan felt this dire to me back at the time. And Bush Jr. the second time didn't exactly feel like the apocalypse, but it sure did feel like as monstrous an insult to my intelligence and an affront to the idea of democracy as this does.
  7:41pm
Jill B.:

I think the USA seniors are now doomed. How could this have happened???????????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Gary:

Mom, do you think Social Security will be on the chopping block?
  7:42pm
Dean:

c/o Brian Leiter's law school blog, this comment by a blog reader in response to yesterday:

Reader Howard Berman, noting that Reagan ran on "hope," wrote: "Dread won the day. Maybe if Sartre were taught in kindergarten we'd be immune to all this."
Avatar 7:43pm
ndbob:

Yep - I see this as much worse than Reagan or the Bushes - I think Bush Sr turned out to be a pretty good president although the campaign that Atwater ran was vile

Again c/o Leiter: "And still, if he moves, as he said he would, to repudiate existing trade agreements, and strengthen Social Security and Medicare, he will be on a collision course with the actual Republicans in Congress."

The catch, of course, is that we have no basis for believing anything he says he would do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

@Dean: right. His anti-TPP stance was the only thing I agreed with in his campaign, but I don't trust that he actually gives a shit about any trade deal.

@Dean McConnell has already given some indication that he will oppose Trump at times - on term limits for example

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Gary:

  7:51pm
Dean:

Yes, @ndbob, I'm wondering whether we might see some surprising shows of bipartisanship. We will always have the worms--Hi, Paul Ryan!--who pretended both to dislike and approve Trump, but many staunch right-wingers did a good job of feigning disgust with the guy.
Avatar 7:51pm
ndbob:

I support TPP I need to say - I think people need to keep in mind that it's wrong to use the same techniques the repubs used to interfere with the running of the system - you don't want a complete breakdown in government
Avatar 7:52pm
ndbob:

@Gary McConnell is a real pain but he might provide a buffer to some of Trump's bad ideas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Parq:

so, sorry to go off topic, but Gary, I really am curious -- why was it necessary to change the name of the Waits song to keep it from getting knocked off the 'net?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Gary:

Hey, Parq -- I am not sure it *was* necessary, but it appears that she may have, just given that she didn't seem to change the lyrics, just the title. Maybe she just had the willies about doing a cover w/out paying?
Avatar 7:53pm
ndbob:

@Dean I hope so - one reason I supported Hillary over Bernie is that she has a history of bipartisanship and he doesn't
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
Parq:

One last thought and then I really gotta go home. I am looking forward with bitter, mirthless amusement to seeing all the GOP bigwigs who fought against Trump all year come crawling to him now. Good night all. As Dan Rather used to say, courage.

Yep, VV is in between LP and Vientiane. I took an insanely winding 7-hour bus ride through stunning mountain passes from VV to LP but I had a lot of time on that trip. VV is a little touristy but nice, but if you have limited time, maybe go w/more time in LP since LP is the best.

i saw Chadbourne recently and picked up his insane new book "Dreamory" which is a 1200 (!) page collage of tour diary and dream diary. i'm about 100 pages in, great late night reading.

Oh, man -- that sounds awesome. I think I saw reference to it on his website

Gary, do you have "LSDC&W: The History of the Chadbournes In America"? I have a terribly shitty MP3 version. Am dying for an upgrade.

Doug! I do not ... I found 10 Eugene Chadbourne CDs last week at Academy Records, and that's all I've got -- they're all very recent things he's patched together and mailed out
